FFR "Live-Appearance" Tournament - Anyone interested?
This is just a thought that I have had for the past couple of months.
I have been thinking about having a FFR/ Stepmania/ OSU! tournament here in Wichita, Kansas. There is an establishment here on the east side of town that sports 24 PC gaming stations - outfitted with Razer Blackwidow keyboards (Cherry MX blue switches) and 24" monitors. Perfect for rhythm gaming if I do say so myself! The venue is located at 11330 East Central Avenue, Suite 800, Wichita, Kansas 67206. There will be a standard $20 entry fee to cover the cost of renting the venue. This may or may not be subject to change. This tournament would be like any other hosted over the internet, but with the twist of physically being next to your opponent. First things first... DA' RULES! 1. Absolutely NO sandbagging. -If you are caught sandbagging, you will be removed from the tournament. No questions asked and no exceptions. 2. Be polite! -This is a LIVE APPEARANCE tournament. You are going to be surrounded by a few other players. Be sure to be quiet and respectful so players can focus on their performance. One firm reprimand will be given, and that is all. You only get one chance, so don't screw it up! 3. Respect the equipment! -At BattleStations Gaming here in Wichita, we are very fortunate to be provided with AMAZING rigs to game on. Please respect them, as they are not cheap to replace and we are dependent on EVERY PC station at the venue to get us through this tournament. 4. Be prepared! -BRING EVERYTHING THAT YOU WILL NEED! We will not be able to provide you with anything if you leave something behind at the house or apartment - wherever you may live. WHAT TO BRING -Laptop & Charger (if you have one) (In case time gets tight) (NO TOWERS ALLOWED AT THE VENUE - SPACE WILL NOT PROVIDE FOR THEM!) -Headphones (You are welcome to practice on your own, of course!) -Money ($40 or so) - There are refreshments at the venue, as well as other places to eat around the area. This will also cover the cost of entry. -A positive attitude! TOURNAMENT FORMAT The tournament (if this comes together and turns out to be something) will be run in a dual-elimination bracket format over the span of seven divisions based on user's skill bracket rankings. QUALIFYING/ELIMINATION ROUNDS Qualifying will take place away from the venue, and eliminations will occur at the venue. We will have 12 hours to run eliminations - which should be plenty of time. Three songs will be assigned to each division to determine where players will be seeded. PRIZES ...just an example. Across all divisions - prizes will not fluctuate between divisions! (Based on a 70-player turnout) - Credit prizes will increase in case there are any willing donators. Prizes also have yet to be decided. FIRST PLACE $50 cash prize, 50,000 credits SECOND PLACE $10 cash prize, 25,000 credits THIRD PLACE $5 cash prize, 10,000 credits Again, THIS IS JUST A THOUGHT FOR TIME BEING. Please leave your thoughts, and if or if not you would you would be interested.

10/10 for pushing rhythm gaming as an e-sport, however, I don't believe in divisions, and I'll let others speak as to whether that's a confounding factor for them. Clearly it is for me.

Yeah, I don't think divisions would be a good idea for a tournament like this. IMO, divisions shouldn't be used as skill dividers in tournaments at all because it turns all long-term tournaments into skill-boost contests, and short-term tournaments into The Price is Right, where you have to get as close to an arbitrary skill cutoff as possible without crossing it. I know TC_Halogen expressed interest at turning the official tournament into a triple-elim bracket, and this would be by far the better format in my opinion for a tournament like this.
That being said, I applaud you for suggesting this and I really hope it becomes a thing. Unfortunately it's a bit out of my distance range, but if this becomes a thing perhaps we can set one up at Dreamhack Austin next May?

If I wasn't 14,590km's away, I would totally come to this. Would be pretty awesome to see this happen anyway.

Would there be media coverage?
I don't own a laptop that isn't a decade old, would it surely be NEEDED? I might have missed an explanation on this but would we need to stay at a hotel/motel? Would a place be provided??

It's a cool idea but I really don't think there would be anywhere close to 70 entrants.

oh
oh dear i think you'll have a hard time getting 70 ffr players willing or able to go to kansas for a shot at $30 (taking the entry fee out of the prize)

Like I have said, this is just a thought. There is lodging available here in town, of course.
Also, with Dreamhack in Austin, I think it would be a better idea to wait off until then. I will have more money to give to winners, and it would be a battle of pure skill. Dreamhack Austin 2016 it is!

FFR doesn't have enough active players to do something like this, nor does stepmania. If anything, it would be an osufest

10/10 = would give me purpose
I don't believe divisions would be wise either. Only national teams of the best of the best; sure the majority of countries would be crushed by US, Canada, Korea and where-ever staiain is from year after year, but it would incite excellent competition if we ever got some form of media coverage. I hope this is a reality one day. |

Re: FFR "Live-Appearance" Tournament - Anyone interested?
Best chance at an irl FFR tourney would be at anime north.
Even then most people are just there for fun so it would be a super laid back tourney. |

Re: FFR "Live-Appearance" Tournament - Anyone interested?
This is a fantastic idea and I appreciate your iniciative... Too bad I'm from Puerto Rico and its too far away and hard for me to get there but it would be amazing if someday something like this could properly be done with a considerable amount of ffr players from the globe (70+ffr players)... Again thanks for suggesting this MKIIPro and I hope this becomes a reality
