yep! already looked at these lists, and even looked at pages for some of my favorite jrpgs. I want more of a personal list, tropes that people are familiar with in some of their favorites as well.

You can always tell who's an eventual party member because they actually look like they have some effort put into their individual design instead of copy-and-paste x5000000000.

[Reincarnate]

-Female childhood friend becomes protagonist's love interest, but they're both pretty quiet about how they really feel

-Protagonist is an orphan or the child of a single parent

-Home town gets ambushed / attacked

-"I know you're trying to save the world and everything, but I'm still going to demand 50000 gil if you want to buy this more powerful weapon equip"

-Enemies become more powerful as you traverse through the world. Man, it's a fucking good thing you didn't start your adventure in some other place where the monsters are tougher, because you'd never make it out alive! Towards the end of the game you are fighting slimes more powerful than the bosses you fought towards the start of the game.

-Somehow people can die to advance the plot, even though you have Revives / Phoenix Down equivalents / etc.

-You're leaving the fate of the world in the hands of a couple kids/teenagers? Wtf are all the adults doing?

-You fight some boss who has all these cool spells, massive HP, and they join your party after you defeat them, aaandd... suddenly all their stats have been nerfed.

-The Chancellor is always a bad guy in disguise. The real one's being held captive in a chest somewhere.

>npcs that repeat themselves forever

>female characters wearing skirts and dresses in cold climate areas and being unaffected

>all shops, regardless of what they sell, are pawn shops that will buy anything from you

>instant cures for poison, blindness, paralysis, petrification, etc. mid-battle

>taking drugs to instantaneously boost stats mid-battle without any consequences

>hacking and slashing without any blood spewing out or with any visible trauma

>mother fucking DRAGONS

>slimes and jellies

>bandits and thieves that always steal your money in battle

>ninja class characters can throw anything in your inventory

>limitless inventory. how and where does it all go?????????

>pitch dark areas that always require some sort of light source in the form of an item or skill in order to progress

>reviving after death like nothing happened. characters never truly die and stay dead

>rescuing someone you just met after they've been kidnapped and held captive

>forcefully and dramatically being separated from your childhood friend early in the game only to be miraculously reunited later on

>meeting random stranger that looks exactly like said childhood friend prior to reuniting with your childhood friend

If you want realtime tropes from jrpgs, watching one would not hurt a bit. Binge watching Sword Art Online & Log Horizon can fill those agendas just sayin'.

Or you could just, you know, look at Ragnarok easily one of the biggest jrpgs out there and tally your list on that.


One of the biggest jrpg tropes that I can find that is 100% separate from regular RPGs, is that jrpgs tend to have some other form of leveling besides bulletpoint level in terms of offense & defense. Such as, profession, for example. Like merchant levels, job levels, tailor, alchemist, etc.. jrpgs practically started that trend.

Actually agree with both of these.

2nd one is just sheer plot convenience for when writers wanna be lazy

but the whole sexual clothing thing

And it's less about "over sexualizing" anyone for me. It's more about explaining how it makes sense.

Like I even see like a female character with their tits out and it's like

ok she has a rack and you wanna show it cool

some tighter lighter armor there would both make more sense, and accomplish the same thing probably

might as well tattoo "aim here since you're looking here anyways" to their chests at that point.

Let me side tangent to anime for a sec, because it applies to both

I'm a megafan of Madoka Magica

but if someone could fucking explain why most of those characters

I'd love to hear you out, but the sexualization one doesn't work there tho.

I can over look a skirt w/e because I dunno what wearing one is like seems like it might give some better movement, but still reveals more than needed it's dumb to some degree

You're capable of jumping up 50 feet in the air during spell/attack animations... but if you're just walking around on the map and you encounter a high platform or ledge? Forget about it -- you're taking the long way.

Similarly, you can destroy hugely powerful enemies... but can't plow your way through a normal door or fence.

-The majority of the "biggest town" is unexplorable and is instead relegated to a very pretty wallpaper like scene where nothing moves.

-The goodie twoshoes character in the party has reservations about entering someone's backyard/fenced in area, and makes you get a key/permission to enter a house via some item quest. Once inside the house, has no qualms about looting the place silly.

-When you defeat a super secret boss, the reward is often useless by this point in the game (e.g. beating Ruby Weapon in FF7 gets you some Desert Rose thing that nets you a Gold Chocobo, which is needed to get the Knights of the Round materia -- but odds are that's the very materia you used to beat Ruby Weapon in the first place)

-One of your party members has royal blood / a special background of some sort, oftentimes revealed partway into the game

there can be some silly stuff for no reason, there doesnt have to be a reason for anything actually, but outfits like killa kill and gurren lagann(mainly Yoko) is more than unreasonable, it's unnecessary.
