Re: Ingame Songs/Stepfiles Discussion Thread
So I just played Kommissario's Master Maid file (purchased) and I have a few comments:
One: Are the 32nd rolls really necessary? Those were basically the ONLY place I lost combo, and it was really frustrating. Two: There were some challenging patterns (notably the section with the 24ths interspersed (drum break-ish) ) that I really enjoyed Three: It's a great song, but parts of it are pretty hard compared to others. There are two sections of jumpstream where I was literally banging my head against my desk when I missed a note or two... I don't think it's off-sync, I just think parts are over-layered. Great song, well worth the 2500 creds, so get playing! |

Re: Ingame Songs/Stepfiles Discussion Thread
Toxiferious was a nice debut, even if he had a file under debit13.
The patterns flowed REALLY nicely, probably because he's a good player and knows what feels right. The patterns and rhythms seemed correct. The song was a little sucky but nice file overall.

finally, my summertime files are all released
Holy Orders, Momentary Life, Brandish Headless...what did y'all think of them? Always interested in feedback, especially for these which were all done after my GH obsession, haha. p.s. SSH is still god.

Re: Ingame Songs/Stepfiles Discussion Thread
nice first post
retort: most dance music also repeats itself, so if you make a cut such that every unique facet of the song is included you lose nothing

Re: Ingame Songs/Stepfiles Discussion Thread
1. You quoted a post that's around half a year old, way to go.
2. I stand by my point from back then anyway. FFR is a game first and a showcase of musical artistry second. Games are less fun when they're repetitive. Cutting repetitive songs makes the game less repetitive, and thus more fun. 3. Many of my favorite songs are in the 5-10 minute range. That doesn't mean I think they're good for FFR (though most of them aren't repetitive anyway). 4. You're telling me I can't post here with your first post. It's not like me to be pompous, but that's pretty damn ironic. XD

dragonruler there is a difference between reading about quantum mechanics for five hours and watching grass grow for five hours. then again the similarity that they share is that theyre both hard to do. the beauty of a microwave is you can do something else while you wait for ya hotdogs, unless you prefer to for some reason simply watch and waste your life

Step One: Pick the instrument with the most PR or column sensitive potential and step that. Step Two: Pick the next one or two prominent instruments and add in arrows on top of the first instrument where they appear. Re-arrange patterns if they are cumbersome (flood over onto one hand too much, repeat the same kinds of patterns/jumps too much, create 16th minijacks or create 8th jacks in one column needlessly) As an example of how you'd post-arrange sounds, the main melody might be descending so you'd go: ...4 ..3. .2.. 1... ...4 ..3. .2.. 1... ...4 ..3. .2.. 1... etc and there's also a snare on every beat so you layer that in: 1..4 ..3. .2.. 1... .2.4 ..3. .2.. 1... .2.4 ..3. .2.. 1... etc But you're not pleased with the feel it creates (the 123212321 pattern it's forming) so you re-arrange it to give a sense of descending while keeping the layering intact: 1..4 ..3. .2.. 1... ..34 .2.. ...4 ..3. 1..4 ..3. .2.. 1... or 1..4 ..3. .2.. 1... ..34 .2.. ..3. 1... .2.4 ..3. .2.. 1... ..34 .2.. ..3. 1... .2.4 ..3. .2.. 1... Common situations where you'd have to rearrange a PR melody to better layer with is when you throw in a triplet on top of a constant stream and have to re-arrange it to add or remove minijacks as is appropriate or if you want to add a minijacking instrument in without anything running into anything else needlessly. You'll probably get the idea of how to layer things smoothly as you practice it

Re: Ingame Songs/Stepfiles Discussion Thread
Ah. Now I get the general gist of it. I understand PR, but layering instruments is something I really need to practice.
Also: I just played I Hate the 80's...goddamnit I hate those LR DU LR 16th notes...if it weren't for those, I could probably FC and AAA. =( |

Re: Ingame Songs/Stepfiles Discussion Thread
PR in this file is bad
Every BPM change was done by ear. Had to use a couple of high BPMs simply to keep the downbeat on a red note; those BPMs were annoying to find. Highest used was 322. The longest I went without using a BPM change was 14/16ths of a measure.

Re: Ingame Songs/Stepfiles Discussion Thread
It says it on the right. And that song was made in Fruity Loops or something because I have that exact same soundfont hahaha.
Props to Patashu, Thrash was really fun. It could've been so much harder though. But then again, this is FFR. I'm trying to step it for StepMania right now x]
