Giant NES Controller: BACK TO WORK!
Several of you may remember that I got started on creating a Giant NES Controller, four feet long, about two years ago. Well, I finally got back to work on it again. Aided by my trusty crew of FFR members and one guy you don't know (but soon will), progress has finally resumed!
Since the controller's frame had been sitting so long, it accumulated dust and baby spiders, which Kenzya and I, being the first two to work on it yesterday, decided didn't need to be part of the controller. We also had to sand down the old paint job since we decided that the first coat, being a bright white, sucked and kind of burned the eyes when out in the sun. It was also kind of rough and blotchy, so we needed to prepare it for a new coat. We have a bit of a modified color scheme this time instead of the old colors with the original paint. I think it'll look better once it's all done, rather than settling for whatever. But you're not reading this anymore, you just want to see pictures! Examining the schematics. The face, base color repainted. Controller frame, also repainted. Math and measurements for black coat. Taping the D-Pad border. Refining the tape job with an X-Acto knife. Repainting corners. Laying down cover for black. I think something funny was said here... Cutting tape on button edges. Something else funny was said. Ready for the black paint. CapnSky paints better than I ever could. Still paintin'... Done, and coated a second time. Looks washed out in the sun. Tape removed. A little messy in some spots, but pretty damn good for now. It'll get touched up in the end. Our progress at sunset. All of us had a part, sans my brother, who decided to sneak in the picture. We are resuming work today, and will hopefully have the paint job finished, have our rough spots polished, and have the enamel coating done today. Check back here for continued progress either tonight or tomorrow morning!

Play games. Super Mario Bros. is a must. But first, we need to get the paint job done. Properly mounting and wiring is the tricky part.

Re: Giant NES Controller: BACK TO WORK!
Thank you CapnSky for your amazing camera skills!
Oh yea Nforcer, no problemo. >=D Whew...that was FUN. Especially dealing with Kenzya's never ending sass. And yea, Neon is huge. He towers over me. But I'm also pretty short, so I guess it's partially my fault... I hope all the painting can get finished today. We're gonna have to hustle. |

It may not look like much but it took Joe a whole day to do that painting.

Re: Giant NES Controller: BACK TO WORK!
The best part about this whole thing is I showed up, watched CapnSky over there spray on another coat of paint, and then helped un-tape stuff.
And then we took a picture. And then we went out for food. Where nforcer's brother stole my cheese fries. =<

Re: Giant NES Controller: BACK TO WORK!
Pretty sweet. Are you gonna give it a shiny clear plastic coating at the end? The thing I don't like about a lot of home-painted things like this is that the texture seems rough compared to the real deal, and the paint seems easy to scratch or melt or flake.
Also, I have already shown this to nforcer and it's nowhere near as cool as his, but here is a fuzzy photo of some guy we saw at Otakon:

My NES is broken. Anyone know a place where I can get it fixed?
Alsso, that's insane. Looking forward to vids of you using it (I think you'll need 2 people to use it). |

Re: Giant NES Controller: BACK TO WORK!
You could try to make a giant Famicom (aka, NES).

Hm. I didn't expect a close-up of myself while working to show up here. Come to think of it, I don't really remember that picture being taken. Oh well. ^^;
Can't wait to get the huge controller done. =) |

Re: Giant NES Controller: BACK TO WORK!
Much more progress has been made. We've got the gray done, and the letters have been laid out and carved for painting. Nintendo, B, and A were finished and given two coats last night and SELECT, START were peeled and given a first coat this morning. I just got back from laying down the second coat for SELECT, START and the fourth for Nintendo, B, A. I think one more should be just enough for all of them. Then, we'll do some touchups.
Here are the relevant pictures. Finishing the tape for gray. Ready for the paint. Here we go! Gray is finally done. Readying the text. Taping down text. Positioning. Accuracy is key! Almost done preparing... Carving the letters. Man, the "R" is so small... Peeling the carved tape. One logo: PEELED! Commence paint! First coat is NOT going to cover the black... Time to carve button letters. Time to paint those letters. Everyone has a part. See, I took the picture! Getting dark. Extra light is essential. This is how we left it last night. We hope to be done with the paint, touch-ups and all, by this evening.

Re: Giant NES Controller: BACK TO WORK!
It won't. Painters use masking tape on canvases all the time for precision. And we had to do it before when we painted the gray on the black, and it came out just fine. =)
