Blank .sm file?
Okay, so I stepped a song using SM 3.9a, and even after I have finished the file, saved it and everything, the .sm is still blank. I can't figure out why. Does anyone know? >_> Help is greatly appreciated.

Re: Blank .sm file?
Ah yes, I know that problem, I had it a while ago.
I bet you're using windows 7. The blank .sm is just the one you created, the .sm Stepmania used is a different one the software created and it's out of grasp because your OS doesn't allow you to see it, somehow, because it's in your Program Files. I fixed that by moving Stepmania from the Program Files to My Documents but I think there is a way to see it by visualizing your folders in some SpEcIaL mode But I may be wrong because I'm taking as a reference the problem I had so if there's any contradiction in my explanations with your problems, it's better to just don't take it in account.

Re: Blank .sm file?
Assuming your SM is installed in Program Files...
Open up your file location and if you see this at the top, click Compatibility Files. Most of SM's files are hidden in here for whatever reason for Vista and W7 users, so you can pretty much resolve this by moving everything back to its original location. Your file might be here with the charts you just worked on if you're absolutely sure you saved properly. In most cases files you work on will end up in here.

Re: Blank .sm file?
Pretty sure this happens because of the windows 7 UAC. It doesn't let things save directly into programs files. Since stepmania doesn't install anything to the registry you can move it out of programs files and it will save. Or you can go to control panel and user settings and turn off UAC.

Both 7 and vista do that. Used to drive me bananas, now I have my SM elsewhere lol.

Re: Blank .sm file?
Yeah, I had an issue the other day when I installed SM. For whatever reason, it didn't give me full access to permissions for use and editing of the data files, which made no sense. I finally got it to allow full permission to the ADMINISTRATOR, which I was using from the start. Computers >.>

Linux ^__^
but yeah, it's likely that UAC is stopping you from doing anything. Just move your SM somewhere that can access/move/delete files anytime (i.e. your My Documents folder). |

Re: Blank .sm file?
Or just right-click -> Properties -> Compatibility -> Check "Run program as Admin"

Re: Blank .sm file?
This is probably also the reason you couldn't edit the metrics.

Re: Blank .sm file?
My SM was in a different location on the computer, in somewhere other than program files and I still had the issue of accessibility permissions. I dunno why, but I did.
