I don't get it. I really don't. I didn't even mention that I thought the question alone was stupid because the answer is bluntly obvious. So what gives?

It's interesting to me because it reminds me of what happens when people are asked about their favorite Saturday Night Live era: it's always the era that you grew up with that you tend to see as the best. A lot of it is because Stepmania is a game that has never stopped evolving and so always carries that scope of grandness and discovery with it (why do you think there are people here, you and myself included, that have stuck with this game for seven, eight years?) Conflict occurs because people can't incorporate their little slice of history into a larger movement that has always been a part of the game.

I say that this is why there will never be a BEST file ever: no matter how good it is, it'll inevitably become outdated in just a few years. That's not tragic at all, though, because it means that this will always be a game with something new and exciting down the line, and I can't wait to see what file people will point to as revolutionary in the years to come.

I feel like choof posted this thread just to emphasize the fact that agreement is impossible and the point has been proven that a best file ever is pretty undecided, and the continuation of this thread would only serve.. no purpose at all

Sounds like a "best file" actually CAN be distinguished, but only for the year in which is was created. That being said, there can be 9 - 10 best files for each of the years that we all played stepmania (around 2003 - 2004 to present day). Considering the best files by the year in which they were released makes a best simfile list MUCH MORE possible to actually make

Planet Karma could very well be the best simfile for 2008 or whenever it was released. Beyond the Earth could very well be for its own year (2005 or 06 I think). The people who have been playing the game the longest are going to be the ones that complain the most. I remember back when Reach's Classic 4 was one of the best files ever at the time. People are going to hold onto opinions like those when they've played for so long

It would be interesting to try and distinguish a certain simfile for each year though. That would be fun

lolz at ppl bashing Planet Karma. It was a sick file for it's time period but that hype only really lasted a couple of months.

Rebirth brought up an awesome point, I feel so biased to older files since the release of a simfile pack (or any simfile that wasn't typical bemani-garbage) was much less common than it is now. The memories and nostalgia from the community at the time also help bolster a love for said files.

That being said I'd have to agree with Gundam-Dude that the majority of sims these days are of a very high quality, it's hard to distinguish a clear winner. It would come down to personal taste of course.

My fav of all time is Toph's Girlboy Song though. Toph files in general have always impressed me, the patterns were always crisp and the song choices were great.

I personally love Kil files by the way, I don't see what's to hate about them. He and Glove both had the best sims out of the 2006-2008 era in my opinion.

toph's beyond the earth -- and here's my reasoning

stargroup's planet karma seemed to me like a multi-movement exercise in stepmania-esque masturbation. the amount of fun i had playing it roughly equated to a handful of playthroughs and dropped linearly like a datsik track after i considered his heavy-handed rhetoric about stepping styles. reading sgroup's thought-processes involved in stepping his magnum opus really brought home just how much he used the song.

he used it like tattered, damp rag, wiping away sweat and sperm as his body toiled in his chair, fanatically using sm 3.9's copy feature to sync every note of every guitar solo to the correct nanosecond.

he violated stephen kay's piano demo with every syncopated partial freeze-jack, stepping on its mutilated corpse while proudly displaying the stargroup school of stepmania thought to the world.

every single 192nd note, every rainbow solo, every arrow is stargroup injecting himself into the player's body, tempting new steppers with the prospective allure of stepping songs like an autist. time spent in the editor for fun and productive purposes quickly becomes time spent angrily spewing swears and obscenities, because the 3.9 editor just won't sync a few notes of 3 second guitar solo in a 5 minute song to acceptable accuracy levels.

every era contains a handful of files that stand out head-and-shoulders above the rest -- necros's azul; glove's the dance of eternity; aperson's vunderbar. while the planet karma hegemony prides itself on converting new followers with its flashy savant-level attention to detail, there is another file where the initial playthrough really stood out for me above all others.

toph's bte marked a turning point for my stepmania experience. at a glance, it seemed like a fun but average file, hastily put together in time for a pack release, but i was left confounded by its mystical qualities. the song and steps worked together on a level that resonated with my being, and on every subsequent playthrough i enjoyed it more and more. it's understated, unpretentious, fun, and expresses the song in its own unique way, excelling in every one of those fields -- and to me, embodies the essence of simfile-making.

apologies to stargroup, i'm just having a little tongue-in-cheek fun (luv u gurl xoxo)

IcyWorld's Game Time deserves more attention/plays as it is one of the most fun MA files I've ever played, so does many other people who played it say (People who originally dled Nuclear Blast packs to get js dumps) definitely one of the best files from last year 8)

Any favorite file I would nominate would be from probably at least 5 years ago. I just haven't played that much of the newer stuff for various reasons. That and the fact that I know I liked files that were not always universally popular, see anything with mines/mines added well before their current popularity really hurts any file that I played a lot.

Loved aperson's Maximizer and Innocent v2, but I highly doubt anyone would ever think to nominate either of those.
