Director Shinichiro Watanabe (Macross Plus, Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, Kids on the Slope) revealed at his Q&A panel at Otakon on Saturday that he is directing the Space Dandy anime at the anime studio BONES. Watanabe said the anime was "not an anime to be taken seriously." It will be the first comedic TV anime series that he will direct. The show will premiere in January 2014.

The producers for the series showed key visuals and character designs for the series (see gallery below). The lead character Dandy is an alien hunter and the "dandiest man in space." The anime is set far in the future where people have gone to the far reaches of the universe. Dandy is searching for aliens that no one has found before with his robot partner QT. Watanabe said Dandy bought the robot thinking it was an R2D2-like robot, but in reality "it was a Roomba." Dandy also travels with a cat alien named Meow. Watanabe showed designs for different aliens, which will be introduced in the series each week.

Figured this is probably the 2nd most popular anime around here for this season. I could be wrong, but whatever.

I don't do drugs or anything, but I could have sworn I was high about 3/4ths of the way through the last episode. When me and Rebirth were watching this we didn't say a word for like 20 minutes and then the only thing that could come to mind was "what the fuck are we watching". Episode 5 is still my favorite.

YES! Space Dandy is so good. I watched the first few episodes and just had to show it to a few friends who "don't like anime"... and they loved it. They are both caught up and watch it on their own now hehehehehe. There are a lot of "what the fuck" moments which is what makes it so good~ I love the funky atmosphere

Episode 10 was alright. I get the feeling it was a reference to Haruhi endless eight.

I half expect every episode to never end in a resolution. I was hoping the latest episode would end with their time loop continuing forever, and of course for episode 11 it starts like nothing ever happened

They did it for episode 1 when they died, and episode 4 (I think) when the episode ended with them never undoing becoming zombies

For some reason I thought it was going to be a 1 26 episode season. I don't even think this is doing well in Japan, but I guess it is doing well enough in the US to get the 2nd half.

oh yeah I finished this on Sunday. It was pretty good. 7/10. Will watch S2.
