Well anything is harder for the less experience. Honestly, BM takes few skill.

Black metal is a great genre of music it sets a sort of environment when you listen to it kind of like a rare wine after a while it gets better....Isahn is kick ass he is the true pioneer of the genre and still makes great music today. Technical skill over musical ingenuity is the worst way possible to think...not everything has to be produced in an expected way musically. People have forgotten the true reason for what metal stands for and it's not who plays the most detailed and difficult song ever known to mankind. Metal has messages and meanings inside and it's expressed differently through the genres. I know it's hard to come back to the old styles when we have all these new catchy rhythms with these "hardcore" breakdowns that stagnate the era today that's more generic than is ingenuitive. But there isn't much you can do music evolves over time and so do the people so it's hard for the new generation to understand what we used to have. Our brotherhood is no longer as strong as it used to be but I will still support true metal. Hail

There IS NO definition of what metal "should be". Stop restricting it with ****ing limits.

Also lulz @ brotherhood. And BM is not the only genre of metal to set a sort of environment, pretty much every other genre does that except BM is "darker" thus people go zomgwtf.

Straight to the point, I love it.
But I prefer neo-classical metal over it.

I bet I'm one of the biggest black metal fans/if not the biggest on these forums. (If you don't believe me, ask datenshi) I've got stuff from the biggest names (Filosofem - Burzum) to the smaller stuff (Demo 2001 - Necroplasma). Some of it can be repetitive, but some of it is amazing and makes you feel it. Also, guitar skill is not always a basic skill in black metal bands.(some of them just suck)

My favorite BM bands -
Eikind
Dark Funeral
Burzum (technially NSBM, but who cares)
Emperor
Venom
Taake
Wyrd
Beherit
Behexen
Von (inspired Watain)
Carthaun
Great Vast Forrest
Gaahlskagg
Kampfar (if you've never heard of them, go buy the cd called Kvass)

I enjoy Black metal quite a bit. How ever I do think that bands like Dimmu Borgir are way overated. Most "black metalers" hated Dimmu Borgir untill that got a hold of HellHammer. Anyhow, I love most Black metal dated back to the days of Bathory. Most of the black metal bands I like consist of:

Burzum
Mayhem
Chthonic
Dark Funeral
Venom
Emperor
Nokturnal Mortum
Immortal
Ancient
Gorgoroth
ect.

Though as far as Mayhem goes, I enjoy the newer Mayhem more so than old. Thats right dead fans!(lol) I think Attlia is a great vocalist and I loved the new album. Don't get me wrong I think the first album was good to. but Mayhem is just...so much cleaner(More together) now.

Listening to 5 different metalcore songs is the same as listening to 5 times the same metalcore song.

The solos, breakdowns and melodies are incredibly generic, boring and uncreactive.

Seriously, metalcore is one of the most gimmicky, generic and overall boring (not to mention painfully faux-depressing) genre out there. It's also not even metal (because it takes a lot more from hardcore than from metal).

Agreed. Also the vocals are just annoying and take little talent. don't forget to mention the Basic drumming that uses three fills at much. Lets see a scremo drummer match Hellhammer and than we will talk.

I enjoy listening to black metal. My favorite black metal artists are Gorgoroth, Emperor, Burzum, 1349, Craft, Ulver, and Opeth's Morningrise album.

I haven't seen 1349 or Ulver get any notice in this thread. 1349 is more of a raw black metal band that's actually newer. Ulver has a few black metal albums. The ones I have are Bergtatt and Nattens Madrigal. Nattens Madrigal was supposedly recorded in the forests giving it a rather abrasive sound. Bergtatt is more of a black metal/folk album. It's vocals are actually clean and it breaks into parts where only a flute plays folkish stuff. It's rather good stuff!

Uh, yea. I don't think I remember you? I want to be at Varg Vikernes' release from prison.

Varg Vikernes is smiling. He looks like he's become slightly more stable in the dome region.

Haha, I never heard that before. I don't imagine it's true, but the sound is pretty darn abrasive. My favorite description I've heard for that album is that it sounds like it was recorded on an answering machine tape.

In any case, I would agree that it's a positively brilliant album. I'm a big fan.

The production sounds like Burzum's Filosofem album multiplied times two with extra 10 grade sand paper glued to it. Then again, most black metal doesn't have very pretty production quality.

I think I enjoy any kind of metal, but especially melodeath or black. As for 'metalcore' I just think it's a fad that everyone seems to be monopolizing on now. There's a new 'metalcore' or 'hardcore' band on myspace everyday. It's ridiculous. I wouldn't mind if half the metalcore bands i've heard were half decent. I guess it's all down to opinion, but it bores the hell out of me.
