Default Music that you listen to that not many know about v2

All of the descriptions were found via Wikipedia

Masta Ace

Masta Ace (born Duval Clear) is a rapper from Brooklyn, New York. Appearing on classic 1988 posse cut, "The Symphony", he garnered notoriety as an unsung asset to the Juice Crew posse, where he released a number of well-respected albums that were nonetheless little-heard outside purist circles.
Aesop Rock

Aesop Rock (born Ian Matthias Bavitz, 1976) is a hip hop musician (rapper and producer). Aesop's style blends a varying tone and delivery with lyrics that contain intricate sequences of widely varying imagery, metaphors, puns, absurdism, and pop culture references, while including the occasional touchstones of traditional hip hop storytelling and self-promotion. As a result of this unorthodox style, Aesop has become a controversial rapper among hip hop enthusiasts.
RJD2

RJD2 (born Ramble John "RJ" Krohn on May 27, 1976) is an American hip hop producer, singer and musician. RJD2 was born in Eugene, Oregon, and raised in Columbus, Ohio. He was signed to the Definitive Jux label and has produced tracks for many prominent rappers. However, he has now left Def Jux and has signed with XL Records.[1]

Now, I know I've posted this before, but I'm all about this guy so he definitely needs to be stressed.

MFDoom

MF DOOM's lyrics are sometimes perceived as eccentric. With an abundant use of polysyllabic rhymes and bizarre metaphors, MF DOOM combines complex syntax with phrasing to create a rhyme flow that is both exhausting and entertaining. His songs commonly lack the typical verse/chorus structure in favor of showcasing extended rhyme schemes and strophic or repeating beats and melodies.
Nujabes

Jun Seba (せば じゅん, Seba Jun?) is a Japanese hip-hop music producer and DJ who records under the name Nujabes. Nujabes is an anagram of his first name (Jun) and last name (Seba) spelled backwards and combined.

Besides making music, he is also an owner of "T Records" and "Guinness Records" (both record stores in Shibuya, Tokyo), and runs Hyde-Out Productions, an indie record label. He has released two CD albums in Japan, Metaphorical Music in 2003 and Modal Soul in 2005. He has also contributed music to the soundtrack of Samurai Champloo, an anime which blends a setting in feudal Japan with modern anachronisms, especially hip-hop music.
Immortal Technique

Felipe Coronel (born February 19, 1978), better known as Immortal Technique, is a hip hop MC and political activist. Most of his lyrics focus on socio-political issues. The views expressed in his lyrics are largely a mixture of left-wing political commentary on issues such as poverty and racism, and conspiracy theories, especially regarding the September 11, 2001 World Trade Center attacks.

One Be Lo

One Be Lo has crafted himself into what he describes as "the emcee’s emcee". He is often praised for his clear delivery, precise rapping style and conscious lyrics, especially from fans of underground hip hop. This was noted by All Music Guide in their review of S.O.N.O.G.R.A.M., saying:

“ One Be Lo is a deep thinker; the details and complex wordplay within his rhymes often take several plays to fully comprehend and appreciate. Similar in effect to X-Clan's Brother J, his words can be righteous, but they're always delivered with casual assurance, like he's talking to an acquaintance at a bus stop. He observes with the wisdom of a father who's been through prison, raises a lot of issues, has almost as many solutions, and never sounds overbearing or preachy."

The Hush Sound

Signed by Fueled by Ramen, (Fallout Boy's private label), I first bought the CD "Like Vines" with a great deal of apprehension. Then I started to like it. It's a female and male vocalist, both chorus students, that play guitar and piano with occasional drums in the background. There are one or two tracks that utilize banjoes, and everyone in the band can carry a damn good tune.

The Format (Dog Problems was my favorite album, hands down, last year)

The Format came out with their first album three years ago, and it was very mediocre. They were trying to conform to a specific label, and after the album undersold, they were dropped. But they managed to get a second album out there, which, while being a break-up album is also one of the most chipper, upbeat CDs I've ever heard.

And bands I like but don't want to type paragraphs about:

Say Anything
The Fratellis
Meat Loaf (His cover of It's All Coming Back to Me Now is so dripping with masculine sentamentality that it makes me want to beat people up while listening to it.)

I absolutly love Infected Mushroom, but it seems that not many people around here listen to them, so there's what Wiki has to say.

Infected Mushroom is an Israeli psychedelic trance duo which has attained significant popularity from the late 1990s to the present time (2007).

Black Majesty

power metal band from Australia. The band formed in Melbourne in 2001 under the name Kymera and with various members already fairly well known on the local metal and heavy rock scene. Guitarist Steve Janevski was drawn from Cyclone Tracy, a long-running heavy rock/hair metal outfit. Bass player Cory Betts was also a member of Pegazus, a well-known Melbourne power metal band that had toured Europe in 1998, although he did not join that band until early 1999. Kymera's other guitarist Hanny Mohammed had recorded an album with a band called Catwitch who had been featured on a television documentary. With drummer Pavel Konvalinka and singer John Cavaliere the band was complete.

During a brief flirtation with the name Arkaya, the band began recording material but Betts left and the group renamed itself Black Majesty. The Sands of Time album was recorded in 2002 and prefaced by a three-track promo disc that won them a contract with German label LMP. Joe Fata replaced Betts in the interim but left before the album was released in 2003.

Since then, Black Majesty has not had a permanent bass player, but Mark Kelson of Melbourne doom band The Eternal and Evan Harris of local 80s metal stalwarts Taramis have featured as touring members, with Harris contributing to both the band's albums. The 2005 release Silent Company saw Konvalinka recording his drum tracks in Germany with Piet Sielck of Iron Savior and the album's release was preceded by a short tour of Europe.

Straight from WIKI:

Colors is a Utah area acoustic pop music group. During its ten year career, Colors became popular in the Utah Latter-Day Saint community. All three members write and sing their own original songs. The band formed while attending Davis High School in Kaysville, Utah and performed their first song, Rain, in an assembly in 1994. The group stayed together over the next several years as all three members attended Utah State University. Their first CD, No Time in Particular, was released while still in high school; it quickly sold the first 500 copies ordered. On February 28, 2003, the group performed their final show at Utah Valley State College's McKay Events Center. The show was recorded on CD and DVD and released as Colors: Live at the McKay Events Center. Colors has since retired from active performing but occasionally returns to the stage.

Seven Nations: Celtic folk/rock

Shooglenifty:

Shooglenifty is an Edinburgh-based six-piece band with a wide international fan base. They are credited with having successfully fused Scottish traditional music with a variety of other styles, making it palatable for the contemporary dance scene. Their wide range in influences, from blues to alternative rock, has resulted in their music being labelled as "hypno-folkedelic ambient trance" or "acid croft" at times.

AfroCelt Sound System:

"The Afro Celt Sound System is a musical group which fuses modern dance rhythms (trip-hop, techno, etc.) with Celtic and African influences."

Slainte Mhath:

The Slainte Mhath (Gaelic for "good health to you") sound draws from a wide range of influences. This high-energy group features traditional instruments associated with the Celtic genre intertwined with grooves, hooks, and sub-bass lines, all augmented with contemporary arrangements.

MacUmba: Lots of bagpipes and South American rhythm instruments.

Hideki Naganuma

Hideki Naganuma is a Japanese music composer who primarily does work for video game soundtracks. His music is broadly defined as J-Pop, but can be quite hard to categorize. He is skilled at mixing Japanese techno, funk, soul, and hip-hop elements to create a unique and vivid sound. Naganuma is most famous for his original compositions used in the Sega Dreamcast game Jet Set Radio (Jet Grind Radio in the USA). He also composed several songs for Jet Set Radio's Xbox sequel, Jet Set Radio Future. In 2004 he authored most of the music for the arcade skating game Ollie King, which was released in Japan only. Most recently, his music has been featured in the SEGA production Sonic Rush for the Nintendo DS. He was recently nominated to receive the Golden Joystick Award for Soundtrack Of The Year for his work on Sonic Rush

Biffy Clyro

Biffy Clyro is a Scottish alternative rock trio.

Generically, the group can only really be safely categorised as a rock band; beyond that, they defy all the common restrictions of genre, often straddling several generic boundaries within one song. So in their own words "Don't pigeon hole, just listen". Their influences remain diverse - according to the band themselves, their sound has been shaped as much by post-emo indie luminaries like Sunny Day Real Estate and Mineral as it has by prog legends Rush.

They have released three albums and fourteen singles, and while they are yet to achieve a top 20 hit, their first single, "27", was promptly awarded Single Of The Week by Taproot in Kerrang!. "Questions and Answers" reached #26, while "The Ideal Height" narrowly missed out on a top 40 chart position. The leading single from Infinity Land ("Glitter and Trauma") reached #21, and second single "My Recovery Injection" reached #23. "There's No Such Thing As A Jaggy Snake" was also a #1 download only single before downloads were counted alongside physical singles.

Local Band like. I go to like all there gigs.

Square Pusher

Squarepusher, the performing pseudonym of Tom Jenkinson, is an English electronic music artist signed to Warp Records. He specialises in the electronic music genres of drum and bass, musique concrète (sampled digitally rather than by tape), and acid, albeit with a significant jazz influence.

Jenkinson was born in Chelmsford, Essex in 1975 and was educated at King Edward VI Grammar School. A self-taught drummer and highly skilled bass guitar player, his style of extremely fast, cut-up beats mixed with fusion jazz and interlaced with synth lines and samples has gained him a cult following. He is a friend of Richard D. James (Aphex Twin), and his albums have been critically acclaimed for their forward-thinking approach to electronic music.

Jenkinson performs live, playing with a fretless or fretted bass guitar, a laptop, and other hardware. He appeared twice on BBC Radio 1's The Breezeblock show. On 26 June 2005, Squarepusher played at London's Royal Festival Hall as part of the Show "Songs of Experience" a tribute to Jimi Hendrix. His 12 minute performance was built up of a medley of Hendrix tracks played solely on the bass guitar with the use of effects.

One of his brothers, Andy Jenkinson, is also a respected recording artist, under the name Ceephax Acid Crew. A third brother, Jonny, also performs and occasionally supports his siblings on tour as a drum and bass DJ.

DJ Krush

DJ Krush (real name Hideaki Ishii) was born in 1962 in Tokyo. After watching the film "Wild Style" in the early 80s, he was inspired, bought some turntables, and started to learn the art of turntablism. In 1987, he formed the Krush Posse, which made numerous appearances as a group in late 1992 and gained him recognition by becoming the first DJ in Japan to perform with live musicians. He released his first album "Krush," which stated his presence in the scene, and he has since released eight more. He has had recording contracts with Chance Records, Ninety Nine Records, Mo-Wax (he was the first Japanese artist to join), Apollo and Sony/Columbia. He works internationally as a producer, re-mixer, DJ and recording artist, bringing the unique flavour of Japanese hip hop to the world

DJ Shadow

Josh Davis, a.k.a. DJ Shadow, (born January 1, 1973 in Davis, California) is a turntablist, producer, and songwriter. His recordings are primarily noted for their lush, atmospheric, sample-based sound.

65daysofstatic
65daysofstatic (also known by the abbreviations 65dos, 65days, or simply 65) are an instrumental math rock and post-rock band from Sheffield, England. Their debut album, The Fall of Math, was released to critical acclaim and they have released a second album, One Time for All Time, which has been well received.

The band intersperses heavy, progressive, guitar-driven instrumental sections with live drums and off-beat sampled drums akin to those of Aphex Twin. Their albums, as a result, maintain a distinctively gritty, almost industrial feel.

Oh yeah!

Tim Ten Yen the Sensational Singing Salaryman. Self-proclaimed pop/surf/lounge singer. Alas, he has no CD's and my favorite song of his, Sea Anemone, is no longer on his myspace. When the Song Applies to You is good, too, though.

unless you're finnish [like the cool people are] or cool, you may not know these bands:

sonata arctica

Quote:
The band was founded by Tony Kakko, Jani Liimatainen, Marko Paasikoski, Tommy Portimo and Pentti Peura in Kemi in 1996.The band, originally named Tricky Beans, played songs which were mostly influenced by the hard rock genre and did not approach the power metal genre as such. During their early career, they recorded three demos which were never sent to any recording label — Friend 'till the End, Agre Pamppers and PeaceMaker.

In 1997 the band's name was changed to Tricky Means, and from that point until 1999 their style was thoroughly worked upon and ultimately was drastically changed, acquiring strong emphasis on the keyboard melodies and relying on an easily distinguishable rhythm line maintained both by the bass and the guitar. Vocalist Tony Kakko developed a clean singing style which relies both on falsetto and tenor voices and second guitarist Marko Paasikoski left the band .

In 1999, the band entered studios to record a demo entitled FullMoon, their line-up composed by vocalist and keyboardist Tony Kakko, guitarist Jani Liimatainen, bassist Janne Kivilahti and drummer Tommy Portimo. The demo was then sent to Spinefarm Records by a friend of the band. A recording deal soon followed and the band changed its name to Sonata Arctica.

Later that year, Sonata Arctica's first single — entitled UnOpened — was released in Finland. It entered the Finnish Top 20 sales chart on the week of its release and, soon enough, the band had closed deals with labels from around the world, prior to the release of their debut album. The debut Ecliptica arrived by the end of 1999 and had a worldwide release, obtaining rave critics from the specialized press.

Tony Kakko then decided to focus on singing and began looking for a new keyboard player for Sonata Arctica; Mikko Härkin (ex-Kenziner) was eventually invited to fill the position.

In the beginning of 2000, Sonata Arctica was chosen to support the well known power metal band Stratovarius throughout their European tour. Marko Paasikoski returned to the band to play bass in the wake of Janne Kivilahti's departure after the tour.

From late 2000 to late 2001, the band worked on composing and recording their next album — Silence — which was released in June of 2001. An extensive tour followed, which included concerts throughout Europe (together with Gamma Ray) and Japan. In 2002 Sonata Arctica made its first incursion to America, putting on shows in Brazil and Chile. According to some of the musicians from the band, it was one of their best tours to date — the other being the Japanese tour from 2003. A live album entitled Songs of Silence was also released that year, consisting of gigs from their tour in Japan.

By the end of 2002, Härkin left the band due to personal reasons. Their third album — Winterheart's Guild — was recorded with the help of the seasoned keyboard player Jens Johansson, from Stratovarius, who recorded the keyboard solos, while Kakko took care of the basics. The album was released in 2003.

In the search for another keyboardist, the band received many applications and two of them were invited for auditions. Since they were well aware of the candidates' ability, the band decided to pick the new member based on personality. To this end they spent a night drinking with each of the potentials in order to find out which one would fit best into the band's personality and mentality. Henrik Klingenberg was eventually chosen and joined the band in time to take part in the tour that followed the release of Winterheart's Guild. Most of the concerts on the tour were sold out.

With the end of their contract with Spinefarm Records, the band received invitations from most European recording labels, and eventually opted for Nuclear Blast.

In early 2004, the band was chosen as the opener for Iron Maiden's Japanese tour. In March of that year, Tommy Portimo became a father; his wife gave birth to a baby girl.

Reckoning Night was recorded in three months and released in October. Both the single and the EP of this release remained on the top of the Finnish charts simultaneously for over six weeks. A promotional tour was to follow, but Sonata Arctica was invited by the popular Nightwish to join their European tour, and thus made a change of plans. The concerts that followed were played for audiences of over ten thousand people.

In early 2005, Nightwish invited the band to open the concerts of their North American tour. This tour eventually got cancelled, but the members of Sonata Arctica opted to still make a short tour, playing concerts in Canada and in the USA.

The band then released a live CD and DVD entitled For the Sake of Revenge, which was recorded in Tokyo in February of 2004, and released in 2006. Then, Spinefarm Records released a compilation album in order to get the most out of their contract with the band, since Sonata Arctica changed their recording label. The compilation is entitled The End of This Chapter and was released in Japan in August 2005 and in Europe on May 2006.

A computer video game is also planned based on Sonata Arctica characters and music. The name of the game will be Winterheart's Guild, like their album. The game will be developed by Zelian Games, and will be an Action-RPG in a style between Fallout and Diablo. Further details or a release date are not yet available, but a demo was shown at the Leipzig video game conference in 2006, featuring Henrik Klingenberg as the playable character.

As of December 2006, the band has begun recording their next studio album. The title is "Unia," as stated on the official website. The album will be released on 25 May, 2007 according to Nuclear Blast.[1]

The band will be headlining ProgPower USA VIII in October 2007.
stratovarius

Quote:
Stratovarius was founded in 1984 in Finland under the name Black Water. They went through a number of personnel changes and changes in style before the band found its own voice. The founding members were Tuomo Lassila, Staffan Stråhlman, and John Vihervä. By 1985, Timo Tolkki entered the band, replacing Stråhlman on guitar, changed the name to Stratovarius (a portmanteau of Stratocaster and Stradivarius) and taking up vocal duties as well. Tolkki became the driving force and mastermind of the band, assuming relatively complete control of the song-writing. He brought along not only strong rock influences, but also a neo-classical tinge. The band released a demo to various record companies by 1987, finally being picked up by CBS Finland. In 1989, their debut album Fright Night was released, following two singles.

After being dropped by CBS, the band went through several member changes, but they managed to release the album Stratovarius II on Bluelight Records, which was re-released as Twilight Time through Noise Records. In 1994 they released their third album, Dreamspace, featuring new bass player Jari Kainulainen, who joined the band when 70% of the new material was already recorded. Tolkki decided to stop singing for the band, and they hired a full-time singer, Timo Kotipelto. The release of Fourth Dimension in 1995 was a huge success for the band, but internal differences, particularly of the style the band was going for, prompted the departure of long-time drummer Tuomo Lassila and keyboardist Antti Ikonen. Two new non-Finnish members were recruited: Swedish keyboardist Jens Johansson, of Yngwie Malmsteen fame; and German drummer Jörg Michael. With the fifth release Episode, Stratovarius had finally found its sound and had a strong, diverse line-up. Episode was a grand project, featuring a large choir and a string orchestra. It was another huge success and is considered by most power metal fans as Stratovarius's best album.

This line-up released three rather successful albums over the years: Visions in 1997, Destiny in 1999, and Infinite in 2000. With every album, their fame and fan-base expanded, and they started gaining a stronger following outside Scandinavia, particularly in Japan.

In 2003, the band released its most epic project yet, the two album suite named Elements. With these albums, they reached a peak in their progressive and symphonic style of power-metal. The first album, Elements, Pt. 1, was released in early 2003, followed by a world tour. Elements, Pt. 1 was followed by Elements, Pt. 2, also released on Nuclear Blast records in the same year.

In late 2003, the band broke up, with Timo Kotipelto and Jörg Michael leaving after a very vaguely explained conflict. Tolkki hired a new singer, Katriina "Miss K" Wiiala, and Anders Johansson of Hammerfall (Jens' brother) temporarily on drums. The rest of 2004 saw virtually complete silence from the band.

Timo Tolkki, who had been publishing several weird notes on Stratovarius' website, was hospitalized and recovered from a mental illness he was going through. In January 2005 it was announced that Stratovarius had reunited with the former line-up. In June 2005, Tolkki announced that the band's bassist, Jari Kainulainen, had left the band due to personal reasons. He was since replaced by Lauri Porra.

Stratovarius then released the self-titled album Stratovarius in September 2005. During this time, Stratovarius began a world tour, starting in Argentina, which included a North American leg, where they toured the United States and Canada for the first time in the band's history. They played at such events as Atlanta's "Prog Power", and in well known venues such as "B.B. King's House Of Blues" in New York and Philadelphia's "Trocadero Theatre". The tour also included European and Japanese cities. The band is set to release a new studio album (Currently codenamed R..... R.....) [1] in October 2007, which eleven tracks have been written for it. Timo Tolkki has stated that the album will be released before a "massive world tour."
