@GammBlaster Yes good point; conversely, it's just as baseless an argument to say that chart toppers are superior pieces of music to any other. The majority of people may prefer mainstream music like the majority of people may prefer the taste of chocolate. This doesn't make chocolate an objectively superior food to say corn, because...well you never know, someone might REALLY like corn! It's okay to like what you like, but calling what you like superior to something that someone else likes is an "ego trap"[spitfire from another thread?].

edit: I agree hi19

Yeah, the real point is just to never assume what someone else enjoys.

That was pretty amazing. Bogo sort is hilarious. Never heard of it but I guess it never ends? Wouldn't really call that a "sort" if it doesn't actually sort anything lol.

EDIT: Just looked it up: "If bogosort were used to sort a deck of cards, it would consist of checking if the deck were in order, and if it were not, throwing the deck into the air, picking the cards up at random, and repeating the process until the deck is sorted". Sounds effective.

Bogosort is a sorting algorithm that tests to see if everything is sorted, and if not it literally just shuffles everything randomly and checks again, until it is.

It's an example of a hilariously ineffective sorting algorithm, though it does have a finite expected running time (the old infinite monkey theorem)

Actually, that kind of attitude made me think about a video I saw a few years ago :

This sums it up well :

They came together to agree, but ultimately, as is very clear, they all came together to congratulate themselves for being "artsy" all while veiling their vanity behind the desire to spread awareness of a true artist, John Cage (although I note later that this was actually not even their true intention).

The video goes on to show the band setting up, and the audience members preparing for the set... Their faces giddy with excitement to be a part of something so hip as a 4'33" cover ( Frank Zappa, James Tenney, who cares, etc... (thanks wiki))

Recording:

All I see are the faces of everyone in the room. Here are my thoughts as near to chronological as possible, upon my first viewing of this.

1. Intentionally recording the crinkling their leather jackets to "fill the silence with the sounds of the room because thats what wikipedia said the composition was about"
2. Snapping their fingers.
3. Coughing.
4. Showing how funny they can be without making (much) sound.
5. Posturing themselves in the "thinking man" pose to appear in a deep thought.
6. Grinning wittily to their dates who are confused by the notion of a "sound of silence."
7. the restlessness of attention-whores who cannot remain quiet nor still, thus making the song about THEM. (look! hear that cough right there?! that was me!)
8. This really isn't a pure recording, as the amplifier is not set to the proper volume: ZERO. but that doesn't make sense matt. He's not actually playing his guitar... you're right, however imagine a person resting their hands on the piano keys , but not playing, while holding the sustain pedal. same thing, douche.
9. a man doing tongue-in-cheek impressions of a man who cannot find his place on the sheet music (although I can assure you he has no idea where he's supposed to be in the sheet music)
10. A man staring determinedly into a blank patch of wall for fear that any form of eye contact would break the illusion that he is intellectual.
11. Many people trying to hold back from laughing.
12. Only four people really understand what is happening. The other 45ish dont get it.
13. A line of audience members' cellphones are set out, it is assumable that they are trying to imply: "if anyone calls durring the recording, it must be acknowledged as a moment of sound within the space of this noteless recording" Although I know they'd rerecord upon such an occurrence due to the upheaval of laughter that would ensue.
14. Everyone's faces are perfectly lit for a MTV music video.
15. the handheld cameras' 50mm lenses flicker focus from perfectly-lit face to perfectly-lit face. This is to appear more indie without losing that edgy-ness; although to the critical eye this gesture is overdone and pathetic.
16. there is music, so we must pretend to bob our heads to the beat and do the wave and totally contradict the concept of the piece we are trying to renovate although failing
17. my eyes are closed to appear as though I am embracing the silence
18. I dyed my hair peppermint grey for this occasion& my sunglasses are expensive
19. At last, the man at the mixer board, who appeared to be genuine, cuts the silence with the announcement that the 4 minute and 33 second time-frame has expired.
and finally:
20. Everyone in the studio consumes themselves in one cacophonous shout of congratulation for their brilliant recording.

Post-recording thoughts
I was very disappointed with the session. Everyone there was trying to get face time, partake in a pseudo-intellectual circle jerk, and ultimately use facebook to push 4'33" to the top of the music charts for the christmas weekend. The pun here being, for the loudest laughers among us, that Christmas would be a Silent Night.

also, without me needing to add: Rage Against the Machine was an awful choice for the title. Although I bet the members of this recording are all raving liberal extremists as well. Cunts.

Discussion is interesting btw, but I think we're starting to derail a bit… To return on topic, I'm impressed with the skill level in D5 this year. I'm sure Salitz will wait until the last few hours to hit a low sdg. Or maybe we'll see Mollo make an unexpecting comeback.

Sorry to kill the suspense but I literally don't have the skill to keep up this round, the top 3 right now are ridiculous. My goal was to hit top 5 so I'm pretty satisfied, especially since D5 wrecked shit this year. Don't count on any last minute surprises from me... or at least that's what I want you to think

It's all lies he just wants everybody to put their guards down so that he can snipe them at the last minute.

EDIT: oh, white text.
