Is FFR just becoming increasingly outdated in relation to gaming culture? Rhythm games aren't as popular as they used to be, at least not Bemani games like DDR, IIDX, etc. Nowadays people go to Just Dance and Osu for rhythm games. Maybe in the future there will be a new wave of interest in these types of games? Either way, I'd like to see this site continue.

old school forums are becoming increasingly outdated, probably due to their asynchronous nature

Many franchises are still popular in Japan. I was speaking in regard to western communities, being that FFR has a western user base. Forums in and of themselves are still popular, though. In the end, sites like reddit and 4chan are forums. Perhaps it's a combination of a forum mixed with the game this site is based off of? Maybe some time in the future trends will cycle back around.

4chan is popular due to it's anonymity and it's role in internet culture
reddit is a glorified link aggregator and image board, I don't think it fits the bill of "old school forums"

The definition of 'old school' can be heavily subjective, ergo it's likely a combination of multiple factors that push a site like this into obsolescence. 4chan is a forum that works because of anonymity, like you said; you can post nearly anything you want without significant repercussions. Reddit works as a forum, because it's for everything and anything with various subforums that they call subreddits. You can engage in logomachy, but in the core sense reddit is a forum.

I think this site has a waning user base not because of the forum, but because of the relative popularity of the game itself.

there's 3 parts to the forums really
chatting (ffr general talk/chit chat/critical thinking/other music games/the werewolf game/other forum games/video games/films/health/sports/garbage)

playing (bragboard/ffr events)

creating (ffr profiles/stepmania/art and graphics/audio and music production/writing)
-can also discuss stepmania and ffr files on their respective boards

a good spot to start would be just pick anything that interests you, and invest some time into that thing
if you don't want to make a new thread, see what threads there are available in the chatting aspect of the site that interest you, and post, then bam you've successfully interacted, and then the scary world of ffr can then continue a normal discussion, or massive derailing can occur, it's an adventure!

I haven't really avoided forums, like i like to check on what's the active topics and such, but when it came to searching around, i usually watched the fitness forums the most.

Pretty sure most of us associate 'old-school' forums with BBS-style forums.

With that said, I think the real BBS killer is Discord.
