Question about splurges ($$$$$?)
What would you guys call a ridiculous splurge? I mean I'm not personally materialistic. However, for over a year since its release, I've been wanting Skyrim. Of course, I can't play it on my laptop, no way could it handle it xD HOWEVER, what I could do is buy a ps3 (not an xbox, eh.) and get skyrim. This also leaves the option open for more games to buy in the future.
However, I make what, $7.75/hr. (8 hours a day..er 7.5 if you want to take out lunch, 5 days a week). The most I spend a month is like 20 dollars a month for myself. To get skyrim, I'd have to spend ~$300. I still live at home, and I'll have to start paying car insurance and health soon. (~$900 total a year). Do you think $300 will have such an impact?? I don't think it will, but my sister scolds me for wanting something so expensive. I feel guilty, to say the least. Also: 1) I'm trying to find a better paying job. 2) I've been working for 4 months this year, and 4 months last year...Whatever you get minus **EDIT - $70 (I try to pay for gas myself whenever I can! - 2 fillups a month?) gets you the ballpark estimate of what's in my bank account. I personally don't feel like it's that big of a deal, but I'm so afraid of being seen as "squanderous" with my money. :/ Last edited by Hazelle; 09-16-2012 at 09:41 PM.. |

Re: Question about splurges ($$$$$?)
a ridiculous splurge is relative imo
as long as you're spending like 30-40% of what you'll have in like a month or maybe even a year, on one thing it's probably worth calling it ridiculous. |

Re: Question about splurges ($$$$$?)
It's ridiculous to spend 300$ for 1 game. Go to a friend's house and play it or internet cafe or something. (Do those things still exist?) Saying that you can buy more ps3 games in the future makes it sound like you don't really have any other ps3 games you actually want to play right now.
I don't think 300$ is a huge impact seeing as you aren't doing/planning anything else with the money though. No you should not buy one. |

Re: Question about splurges ($$$$$?)
Splurges are relative. It depends on your personal budget.
Personally, if I splurge a month's worth of net income on something like a vacation or new computer, I can bounce back from that. But 6 months worth? I'm probably wasting money and could be putting the funds to better use. |

I'm actually at the same point, Hazelle, just over something else.
I think I'll be coming back to this thread just to see thoughts for my own situation too lmao

Re: Question about splurges ($$$$$?)
Watch a let's play on youtube and do something else. The price/investment is not worth it imo.
Skyrim is the kind of game you play once, have fun on the moment and don't really come back to later because gameplay is not that great even if everything else was here. Last edited by Hakulyte; 09-16-2012 at 10:05 PM.. |

Re: Question about splurges ($$$$$?)
Probably at least be a good idea to find other games you'd wanna play, even if you don't get them right away. I actually did the same thing but got Xbox xD I played it for a couple of weeks, but I would say it's probably over-rated. Don't really regret getting it or anything, but just make sure you personally actually want it (which you're doing a great job of so far, by the way, by asking for other opinions), before you decide to spend the money on it. Like others have said, it really depends on how much money you have total, too (was too lazy to calculate a ballpark estimate of what you might have). I really wouldn't see it as a big deal, though, even if you don't know of any games at this moment that you would want, there's still plenty out there and more that will be out there that you'll probably be able to find some interest in.

Yeah...it has been indeed. Apparently, law offices in general are hard to get hired by due to unemployment and lack of clients lately. :/ Though I do admit, haven't been searching every day of my life for a new job xD Frustrating D:

That being said, Skyrim held my interest for ~2 weeks (less than 1 before modding it) before I decided that it was not for me and will not be worth a purchase. PS: Subin, I do think the issue here is also that she is un-able to run skyrim on her laptop... regardless give the pirated version a try to see if you COULD run it and if you can, give it a good playthrough to see how you like it. @OP: If you really want something it's good to spend it on yourself. I myself spent about 50 bucks AT THE MOST per month on myself while the rest all flows into my bank account. As long as you are in the green, and have a steady income and know how long it will take you to "bounce back", such a spending spree should be doable, if not even beneficial if you really want something. (as opposed to being anxious about really wanting something) Last edited by Coolboyrulez0; 09-17-2012 at 07:19 AM.. |

Re: Question about splurges ($$$$$?)
Save your money and then invest in a moderate gaming computer. It is way more worthwhile. I'd even help you pick out compatible hardware that would only cost around $500 but be able to play skyrim like a charm.
