Thanks for the recommendations guys, I'm trying to download them but they take like 10 hours just for half the movie =/. Is the quality on Youtube pretty good for those? Anyways, I agree with Guido on the whole romance thing. I didn't really see much romance in Spirited Away, I haven't seen the other though.

And also:

YES. I'm just finishing that and it's awesome. Hardly anyone knows about it, but it's really great and I recommend it to anyone. It's not your typical shounen anime, it's 28 episodes and very fast pased (in a good way). I love how it starts out, and you're pretty confused, but then as the story goes on you learn more and more about the characters or the show itself.

Uh, hardly anyone knows about .hack//sign?

I'd say it's in the top 20 of the most popular anime ever.

It's a shame it's so terribly boring that I cannot believe anyone ever enjoyed it.

Plot Summary: Fumihiko Matsumaru is an average salaryman with no girlfriend. He invited his colleague Miss Tanaka to a movie but was stood up. Right at the time he was about to toss tickets into a trash can, a cute girl appeared and asked him not to waste those two tickets. After movie and dinner, he escorted her home and found they live in the same neighborhood, yet unfortunately her apartment caught on fire hours later. Having nowhere else to stay, rookie seiyuu Aka Onda moved to Matsumaru's place, and the two had started a "more than friend but not yet lovers" relationship under the same roof while keeping this secret from their employers.
If you haven't been reading the "Why do people like Hentai" thread recently then you wouldn't know I asked if anyone new a mature romance anime. One that wasn't "will he/wont he finally make a move" romance that lasts over 25/50/300 odd episodes. Jamuko recommended "REC". The anime is only 12 odd minutes long and there are only nine episodes. While it's not really hentai is certainly a muture enough anime. I've been loving it so far.

If anyone knows of any other anime like REC give me a shout as I loved watching it.

The only thing I didn't like about REC is (Highlight the following lines for spoiler)

the fact that the main characters do it in the first 10 minutes of episode 1.

That's just dumb IMO. Other than that, it was a pretty good series, if you're into that sort of thing.

I think it's far from dumb. Things like that happen. May be silly on the characters decision side of things but I don't think it was dumb story wise.

REC was great. It might seem rushed in the first episode, but that just sets it up for interesting development afterwards. It's really short, so it doesn't waste any time getting to the main focus of the story.

Anyway, I'm here to make another recommendation.

I went to the Cherry Blossom Festival in DC today, and got to see an early showing of Satoshi Kon's new film, Paprika. It should be released in theaters around the US in late May, I believe. We got a real treat; Kon himself was there for the showing and spoke to us via translator lady, and also did a Q&A session after the film. (I also lucked out and got a free poster before they quickly ran out!)

It was a great movie. I really respect that man, and now feel a need to see the rest of his works that I haven't yet seen. He was also director of Perfect Blue, Millennium Actress, Tokyo Godfathers, and the TV anime Paranoia Agent, if you've seen any of those.

I don't hesitate for a second to put him up there with Miyazaki. His works are complex and skillfully directed and animated, with a recurring theme of reality blending with dreams or memories (although it should be noted that his films are made for an adult audience, unlike Miyazaki's which can be equally enjoyed by children and adults).

Paprika deals heavily with dreams and the subconscious, eventually overlapping and melding with reality. If this sounds appealing to you, I highly recommend you see the movie when it reaches theaters.

As Kon told us before the film, it is weird and complex, but it is best watched while sitting back and enjoying, as getting caught up in analysis of the plot could leave you confused. Just as when riding a roller coaster, he said, you don't calculate your speed or angle of travel; you just sit back, scream, and enjoy the ride. This is how the movie should be viewed.

Edit: Trailer for Paprika can be seen here: http://www.sonyclassics.com/paprika/

I highly recommend this show. I'm only half way through it and I already know i'm very close to calling it "masterpiece". It's funny, funny as hell. The story is really quite strange but it's fantastic. The characters are awesome. The style is brilliant and the animation is superb.

Every episode has had me wanting more and more. Every episode has made me laugh and so far every episode has been just plain fun to watch.

Welcome to the N.H.K.

from wikipedia

Quote:
Welcome to the N.H.K. revolves around the lives of several young-adults all living in or around the city of Tokyo. Many different lifestyles are shown though most of the time the story focuses on the concepts of being a hikikomori, anime otaku, and having most of the characters experience intense feelings of depression and loneliness.

The main protagonist is Tatsuhiro Satō, a university dropout entering his fourth year of unemployment. He leads a reclusive life as a hikikomori, ultimately coming to the bizarre conclusion that this happened due to some sort of conspiracy. One day just when his life seems entirely unchanging, he meets Misaki Nakahara, a mysterious girl who claims to be able to cure Tatsuhiro of his hikikomori ways. She presents him with a contract basically outlining that once a day they would meet in the evening in a local park where Misaki would lecture to Tatsuhiro in an effort to rid him of his lifestyle. During these outings, many subjects are discussed, though they almost always pertain in some way to psychology or psychoanalysis. One of their first meetings in fact deals with interpreting Tatsuhiro's recent dreams.

Both Tatsuhiro and Misaki, however, have a tendency of over-doing things, such as hiding the truth, especially from each other and themselves. Despite Misaki's offer and pressing attempts at salvation, it is Tatsuhiro's neighbor and high school friend, Kaoru Yamazaki, whom Tatsuhiro often turns to in moments of need and support. Also, despite his own idiosyncrasies, Yamazaki is one of the more stable characters in the story.

The novel also regularly mentions drug use by the main character, and later, his friend, Yamazaki. The anime and manga leave out this element of the story. This is likely due to several reasons, including a more public-friendly rating, as well as ultimately being unneeded for the progression of the plot.

Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu (10/10)
Supernatural, Comedy, Adventure, Little Ecchi/Fanservice

Well, first, they started a "religion" for this, Haruhiism, the show is awesome and you'll love every character, no kidding, it's really cute, but really stange too because the episode were not broadcast in the good order so it's confusing, There's a dance at the end of show the Hare Hare Yukai wich became popular worldwide!!! Seriously, watch it!

Lucky Star! (10/10)

Slice of Life, Comedy, Satire, Anime Reference, Anime Reference, Satire

this show is about an otaku girl and her friends, it doesn't have any story, looks boring right? Well it's NOT, it's just really funny and it parodies about 50 anime (430 parodies of animes in this show i think). If you're not a otaku you won't understand 40 % of the show, and the reference are more from CLANNAD, Kanon, Air (H-game and anime) but the BIGGEST is Suzumiya Haruhi no yuutsu! Really....

Higurashi No Naku koro ni / Kai (9.1/10) (WARNING!: Extreme Violence)

Horror, Comedy(at some moments), Murders, Crimes, Strange Story, Drama

The show is about a lot of thing, but the main is: a boy named Keiichi just arrives to a village, with a strange story about a temple and i won't tell you more ^^ The show is strange and repetitive but the story become clearly after the first season ends!

After thoroughly scanning through the first couple of sentences of the first post and rereading the title, I noticed how nowhere does it say that we can only recommend anime, which is good because it would be a shame not to recommend these two great mangas just because there isn't an anime for it.

Mx0 9/10 Comedy
This is a story about a kid who gets admitted into a school that teaches magic, although he has no magical ability. Worst yet, due to an incident with another teacher, people believe that he's great with magic. The story is about how he tries to deceive everyone about his magic ability while trying to learn a little magic and grant his love interest with a wish to make her dreams come true.

Fairy Tail 10/10 Comedy
Fairy Tail ranks right up there with One Piece in my book. It has a very One Piece feeling to the story, theme, and characters. So if you liked One Piece, you'll more than likely enjoy Fairy Tail. It's a story about a girl who joins a Magic Guild and she finds a lot of good friends. Each character has their own story line and they help each other get through their individual problems.

OMG 5 pages and no-one has mentioned Hajime no ippo (Fighting Spirit)

It's kinda cheesy at some points and its got its downsides but I thought it was good...

Hajime no Ippo (9/10)
Genres: comedy, drama, tournament

Themes: Sports

Age rating: Teenagers (May contain bloody violence, bad language, nudity)

Plot Summary: Ippo, a timid highschooler, is one day saved from being beaten up by Takamura, a boxer. Enthralled by Takamura's skills Ippo begins to learn boxing, soon finding love for the sport and a drive to challenge the boxing world.
