It adds up if your pack is really big.
Like, really adds up.

I saved over 100 MB in Yolomania 4 by converting all backgrounds to jpgs. I think that is significant enough to actually matter.

A quick test on a 1280x720 image gave me the following:
8/12 Quality JPG - 183KB
PNG - 1.21MB

Not to mention 99% of people play with backgrounds off, why fill up their hard drive space with something they're not going to see?

what is the point in even making graphics (backgrounds in particular) in the first place with this logic

Some people (or just me) actually like to see the bg in the songs. Just because most players turn off background is kind of a stupid reason imo. Also who the hell likes to look at the generic bg anyway.

I still have backgrounds on when I play, although they are typically only 20% visible. I like seeing a nicely crafted background that matches the song.

I mean yeah I still play with bgs visible by like 20% too, to each their own.

What I find odd is that if "99% of people play with backgrounds off" what is the point in even investing the time to create background graphics? To appeal to the apparent 1% demographic that play with backgrounds on? Why even bother converting png backgrounds to jpegs for an entire pack when you can completely skip the background creation process in itself? I mean clearly hard drive space is way more important than aesthetic is what he's implying.

A file doesn't really feel complete without at least a set of graphics (bg/bn/cdtitle). I doubt the validity of the statement that 99% of people who play SM play with no background haha.

The backgrounds are useful for score screens and themes that show it on song select. I'm just saying that a slight degradation in quality has more significant advantages than some might think.

If you got 100MB savings on pack size that's actually a really good argument for .jpg, I didn't realize it was THAT much.
I'll have to check how it changes with my next pack.
For some detailed BGs the quality drop is noticeable even at 1280x720 resolution, though, and I am a fan of my fancy GFX.

I don't even create bg's for any of my files, only bn's & cdtitle's.

Does that trigger you? Literally 100's of files, with no backgrounds, just the banners & cdtitles?

hit n slap so far feels kinda bland.. weird to say coming from me, but i don't see how it'd be even remotely interesting even barely past a quadbait file. i'll let someone else give that a go

maybe i'll step AA instead with a better mp3
