I'm going to bump this because I just received my Post 9/11 GI Bill certificate of eligibility, and I spoke to the VA today about benefits. I get 60% tuition paid for by the VA, the remaining 40% I have to pick up with federal aid. But I also get 60% book stipend ($600/yr for books), and 60% housing allowance, billed as an E-5 with dependents, which ends up being $808/mo for my zip code.

With Post 9/11, I get 36 months of benefits, and I have until 2026 to use all of them.
So I'm going to be double majoring in Network Security and Mathematics, staggered (so I will start Network Security one semester before Mathematics), and then will transfer to UNLV to finish a BS in Computer Science. I'm doing it like this so, in the event that my benefits arent' able to cover my BS costs, I can use my AAS in Network Security to get a job and I'll just finish up going to school part-time.

I'm so fuckin happy right now you don't even know.

#realshit

the double major is a poor choice, stick with only mathematics; you're loading yourself with ancillary bullshit that you don't need. going for a pure math degree will get you hired to a dev incubator that creates sha/md5/3des hashing algoss and type-1 encryption algos ANYWAY, which they require you to have a pure mathematics degree. the NSA, with all of it's netsec, is the #1 hiring entity for mathematicians.

99% of network security fundamental understanding can be accomplished by studying the ccna-security and working with ASA models and wireshark, or studying the cissp with a little bit of ceh/rhel unix coding (nmap, netcat, metasploit). your army-provided ccna/sec+ was mandatory, but don't discount it: you still have introductory experience so you at least know the basic shit of what i'm talking about, and know that value of certifications should you choose to find work part-time.

if you puss out of mathematics and go into cs instead, realize you're taking the leap from hardware-intensive security-algorithm development to software-defined coding. instead of applicative algorithm training for encryption, you will be doing programming work. whether you become a DBA, SQL admin, python/c++/java dev, realize that they are completely different levels of IT.

do not squander the gi bill and think you can live within the e-5 pay year round and splurge on stupid shit: the 36 months are broken up into the 4 9-month school years, so you better remember to save up before the summer and winter breaks. i know too many airmen/soldiers/marines who think they're hot shit going to CC/uni for free and not have to work that they feel privilege as fuck with a medical separation.

keep your head straight and knock that shit out - congratulations choofers.

oh lol okay I know who this is
I'm double majoring, no doubt
look up imposter syndrome; I pretty much need to go full time or I'll feel more inferior than I already do

I dont feel privileged per se, more like I'm getting a second at not fucking up

the only thing I'd splurge on is a desktop from goodwill so I can run command line linux for a seedbox and media server, that's pretty much it

I guess this is a few weeks late, but be prepared to work really hard for the double major.
You'll probably do great.

Congrats Choof. Glad to hear it!

Just my 2 cents since I got a BS in Computer Science, and my College may vary a bit compared to the one you plan on transferring to.

CS makes you go through basic math (Calc I, II, II, Linear Alg, Set Theory/Logic, and Theory of Computation). Basically getting you ready for using algorithms etc etc

But the cool thing about it was the last year they allowed general CS students to pick a field they wanted to go into. For us it was Data Mining/Forensics, Software/Graphics, and AI. Hopefully yours will allow you the chance to choose as well.

But all in all, Congrats, and best of luck!

#realshit v2
last summer wasn't too hot in regards to the shit I was putting up with so I, uh... failed the classes since I just stopped going.
FORTUNATELY THO I AM BACK IN FULL FORCE
I owe a pretty small amount and I'm working all month. the qualification for the va benefits don't technically expire so I still get the full breadth of whatever they originally gave me, and I don't expect to be doing school in 2027 or whatever.

plans were delayed for a year but I suppose that was actually a good thing overall.
