Also..it was a threat by a bunch of hackers, what damage could a bunch of hacktivists really cause?

As for the movie, couldn't give two shits about it. Looked retarded anyway.
A bunch of people are calling they cancellation stupid because there's no way NK could follow through with their threats to bomb 18000 theaters.

But they're forgetting that it only takes one theater shooting to make this a tragedy. If even one person dies because of this stupid movie, is it worth it to release?

The flip-side is that the movie is released and NK does something fucking stupid, then people still yell at Sony. Sony can't really win.

Any evidence behind this supposedly existing? That's ridiculous if it exists.

a lot of news sites have been copy/pasting the same story about "unit 121" for weeks
i've traced part of it back to this:

It's hardly ridiculous.
NK may be backward but its leaders are hardly stupid, it's pretty obvious that cyberwarfare and terrorism is highly economical. High effect for comparatively little investment compared to traditional armies. Perfect for a country with low resources and - certainly, at least, the historical pedigree of - an intelligent and collectively-minded population.

Err, you do know the U.S. has had a dedicated cyberwarfare division of the Strategic Command since like, 2009?
Each of the branches of the armed forces have their own divisions too.
And there's public records of this kind of activity going on since basically back to the Cold War, so we can only assume what kind of classified research and planning has been going on.

Western governments aren't totally out of the loop, you gotta give us some credit haha

They didn't have much means of even connecting computers to the internet yet going into the Cold War, but it did start around there.

Interesting to be finding this out now though. The most I saw was like neighbourhood watch or NSA in comparison.

The U.S. actually has a fairly well-developed stance on cyber attacks. You can argue it's too late or we are behind the curve, but we're definitely not clueless.
For example, if the Sony hack is indeed revealed to be North Korean in origin, U.S. policies very clearly state that it can be taken as an act of war and responded to as such:
"Hostile acts, it said, could include 'significant cyber attacks directed against the U.S. economy, government or military'"

Goes to show how much I know about American Law.

http://time.com/3640419/sony-hack-no...a-white-house/

The White House is currently deciding a plan of countermeasure or counter"attack" right now. Whether that be a counterattack, denouncation, or straight up blocking out the hack, I have no idea.

From the desk of the FBI:

While the need to protect sensitive sources and methods precludes us from sharing all of this information, our conclusion is based, in part, on the following:

· Technical analysis of the data deletion malware used in this attack revealed links to other malware that the FBI knows North Korean actors previously developed. For example, there were similarities in specific lines of code, encryption algorithms, data deletion methods, and compromised networks.

· The FBI also observed significant overlap between the infrastructure used in this attack and other malicious cyber activity the U.S. Government has previously linked directly to North Korea. For example, the FBI discovered that several Internet protocol (IP) addresses associated with known North Korean infrastructure communicated with IP addresses that were hardcoded into the data deletion malware used in this attack.

· Separately, the tools used in the SPE attack have similarities to a cyber attack in March of last year against South Korean banks and media outlets, which was carried out by North Korea.

We are deeply concerned about the destructive nature of this attack on a private sector entity and the ordinary citizens who worked there. Further, North Korea’s attack on SPE reaffirms that cyber threats pose one of the gravest national security dangers to the United States. Though the FBI has seen a wide variety and increasing number of cyber intrusions, the destructive nature of this attack, coupled with its coercive nature, sets it apart. North Korea’s actions were intended to inflict significant harm on a U.S. business and suppress the right of American citizens to express themselves. Such acts of intimidation fall outside the bounds of acceptable state behavior. The FBI takes seriously any attempt – whether through cyber-enabled means, threats of violence, or otherwise – to undermine the economic and social prosperity of our citizens.
Feds are pretty consistent in saying that it is 100% North Korea's fault. In other news, North Korea is proposing that they team up with U.S.A. and both try to solve the case together, as a way of pledging themselves as not doing it, and had the balls to say that if U.S.A. doesn't agree to it, they will receive "the gravest of consequences".

http://gizmodo.com/north-korea-wants...ate-1673566334

Literally a case of the stupid right now.

I mean, why would you partner up with the suspect in a crime for the solving of their own crime? That's dumb. It just offers North Korea a chance to cover up their crimes so that when U.S.A. comes over to look they don't see shit. On top of that, they're making petty threats for if and when the U.S.A. does not comply like seriously... Why would I even come into your country to help fix your problems, when if I refuse, you make problems for me? North Korea is going to be a shit any way you put it. Literally just asking for a war at this point in time.

They say there will be a hightened police presence in and around the theater, but still seems dangerous to me.

This movie is overwhelmingly dumb as shit and I expected nothing less and the amount of publicity it got out of this fiasco is probably far more than Sony wanted to spend in the first place. I would not have seen it otherwise (not that I was planning to pay for it anyway).
