Re: Evolution of FFR
Yeah iirc synths original simfiles were all written in notepad. I don't really remember much that hasn't already been covered. Soccr was the main guy behind R2 which never really ran well (and had some weird user created tracks, I remember roller coaster something). Thirdstyle was supposed to be the successor but eventually ended up as a long running joke akin to the loch Ness monster.
The games we played was a single file at one point too. Oh and during R1 there were no speed mods, so you would take the window out of fullscreen and crop it so you only see half of the playing screen, which in essence would act as a makeshift speed mod; desperate days. Re: Evolution of FFR
I don't have my research docs right now since I'm away but I figured I could leave some stuff I remember stumbling upon:
By exploring Xqsite from this date onward you'll discover most of the info regarding site development: http://web.archive.org/web/200211250...://xqsite.com/ thewerewolfgame.com mirror should also work. - Nestlekwik's offshoot fansite is amazingly still up on Geocities and can be browsed for some giggles: http://www.geocities.ws/ffrsatelite/mainpage.html - Our forums still keeps mostly everything archived (thanks to Synth), there are some goodies you can find in earlier, more simple times: On the converter: http://www.flashflashrevolution.com/...thread.php?t=2 http://www.flashflashrevolution.com/...hread.php?t=21 http://www.flashflashrevolution.com/...hread.php?t=99 On the site: http://www.flashflashrevolution.com/...read.php?t=189 http://www.flashflashrevolution.com/...ead.php?t=1200 You get the idea. |

Re: Evolution of FFR
No doubt. From what I can recall, it was common practice in the days before the first release of StepMania featuring a built-in editor.
He wanted to make a hard simfile, for sure, but the disparity in difficulty between Revolutionary Etude and files like Chrono Trigger wasn't too drastic at the time. A bunch of files had 0-framer issues which went unfixed for a while, so when you pair that with the avmiss glitch, they were impossible to full combo. The timing windows also used to be way tighter. At least in my eyes, Revolutionary Etude didn't stand out from other legacy files in terms of difficulty the way it does now. (There's also that whole deal with the converter creating more jacks than was intended.) As far as I know, Synthlight didn't manage any kind of submission system open to the average user or anything like that. My guess would be that the site's few "power users" at the time would just send him messages asking him to put their simfiles in the game, and if Synth liked what he saw, he would oblige. |

Re: Evolution of FFR
and probably because it was so tedious to do files in notepad, any and all files would have been welcome at that point

Not hard to guess how it went. Last edited by Crazyjayde; 10-21-2014 at 11:15 PM.. |

Re: Evolution of FFR
Not sure if it was mentioned or not after skimming over the thread quickly, but if you're looking at potentially removed/missing songs, I remember there being a nyan cat song that was released as an april fools joke along with wimper wall. There was a contest for who could rack up the highest combo on the song, as the song was 23 seconds long and repeated indefinitely until you ran out of health. Hakulyte won the contest iirc.
The song is entirely different from the current nyanyanyanyanyanyanya! in the engine. Last edited by gold stinger; 10-22-2014 at 03:35 AM.. |
