"Generally if a file is good, most judges should see eye to eye."

in practice, this is not true
most files that are good are good because they do something novel - and by definition that means you're going to get a mixed judgement. if it WAS true we'd only need one judge to look at each file!

the converse - if a file is bad, judges will see it's shit - is true however

Earlier someone mentioned that "no one gets paid for this" is a stupid excuse. That's absolute bullshit because honestly, you can't expect people to perform a job without any encouragement (payment, appreciation or whatever floats your boat and motivates you). It's good that people do volunteer but if there's a lack of encouragement to do the work, it's definitely not the judge's fault, but due to a lack of motivating factors. Why else would you do a job?

That aside, the judging process shouldn't be so secluded. At least, not later on. Discussion is healthy and you don't see top judges for artistic talent (be it singing, dancing, art or whatever you can think of) just going to their secluded little island and make their own opinion. They discuss with each other. Yes judges can be convinced by other judges, but is that a bad thing? Convincing others happens when someone makes a rational and logical argument, and shouldn't be shut off from the others. It's a test of your logic, and if your logic stands you have nothing to worry about. If it doesn't stand, it's a learning moment for that judge, and he or she should revise his opinion.

Also, I'd like to give myself up for judge for the next batch. I think it'd be a good to have some new insights and I'm willing to make some time for judging. I'm not very known for my judging and I've been mostly in the background when it comes to judging (and simfiling in general really), but people who know me and have asked me to judge their work can vouch for my reviews.

I'd love to judge tbh even if it was only as a back up

but to be completely honest I doubt it would ever happen.

I also can't say I'd blame them either.

because you enjoy it? why is everything about getting satisfaction from others towards what you do? do a job because with the motivation of saying that it's a finished job when you finish, and earn the satisfaction of finishing a job that you said you would do. I don't care if people don't appreciate the work that I do for free, but I do care that the job gets done so that others will see the benefits of it. That's two entirely different things.

Do it because you want to AND because you possess the skills to, not because you need to. Sorry, but I fail to see how it's a stupid excuse and never will. In the case of the batch, there are people that are waiting for the notes and will undoubtedly be thankful to see them, so yeah, there's something to do the notes for every single time that they are volunteering.

EDIT: +1 to you at least starting as a backup judge, wouldn't mind it personally

spitfire and plopadop would make great judges.

both have been around for a while, made some great files, and generally know what they're talking about.

I'm glad people are agreeing to my post about the judges discussing their opinions amongst each other about a particular file.

I don't need to like your charts to see you know what your doing

I mean anything I think I've ever said about your charts was mostly personal preference, but I can't remember clearly so that might be inaccurate.

Dunno I just tend to disagree a lot. Maybe it's just me.

You're missing the point, it's not satisfaction from others but rewards for you. Say you're making your career out of stepman (huehue). You'll want something more than a "you finished your job" in the long run, so it's natural people lose motivation if that's all you get as reward. Sure people are thankful for the judges doing their job but that never gets told to them explicitly. People bitch when you do a bad job, and people don't mention it when you're doing a good job because that's to be expected.

There's a ton of research on this stuff and I can go into more depth but basically, humans thrive for:
Meaning
Recognition
Compensation

Compensation being at the bottom of the pyramid and meaning at the top of the pyramid. Compensation is what draws people, recognition is what makes people stay, and meaning is what makes the job have meaning for their everyday life. These are the basics of motivation for a job. If there's a lack of these, then you can't expect someone to be motivated either, and since you're already lacking in compensation and recognition, it's no surprise that the motivation for meaning starts to diminish as well when you get no compensation and no recognition.

Everybody loses motivation, it's how the company (or in this case, FFR) reminds them of their motivation and rewards a job well done that boosts motivation.

Also, just as backup judge? lol
