i.e. = id est = that is ~ "by that I mean"
e.g. = examplum gratia = given the example ~ "for example"
AM = ante meridiem = before mid-day
PM = post meridiem = after mid-day

And so on. If you know what i.e. and e.g. literally mean, it should be obvious which of the two to use.
