just fucking slap text on a banner and you're done. yeah, I'm guilty of doing this sometimes because no one is going to appreciate the time spent shitting out something in photoshop when they're not going to see it outside of the song select screen banner

Some people (or just me) actually like to see the bg in the songs. Just because most players turn off background is kind of a stupid reason imo. Also who the hell likes to look at the generic bg anyway.
