"candles" is a term coined by Chris Foy (foyboy, most known for charts on In The Groove) for patterns that, when using two inputs on an index-style playstyle (i.e. both feet, two fingers, index, etc), cause the player to circle around the game pad
e.g. left-down-up-right-down-up-[repeat] or right-up-down-left-up-down-[repeat] in DDR
the term comes from the nursery rhyme "jack be nimble, jack be quick, jack jumped over the candle stick" where the candle = the center of the pad
