I think it wasn't the sarcasm, it was the sincerity behind it
like jokingly calling a smart person an idiot is ironic and insincere
jokingly calling a stupid person an idiot can still be sarcasm but it's more grounded in reality and more likely to seem hostile
not gonna belabor that point though
