I also own the Hf5 and it is a good phone, though I haven't sampled many IEMs (in-ear monitors). From a noise cancelling point of view they are pretty much equal to any other decent IEM, only really low frequencies will get through (which generally isn't a problem).
A non-earphone that I think is fine to use in-public is the Koss PortaPro, really cheap (around $40), decent for its price and mostly low profile.
I will also second what has been said about m50, probably the safest bet on its price range. And for open-back I'd recommend any lower-end Grado, I currently own and use a SR225 and so far is my preferred headphone.
