This was the exact same thing that ran through my mind; that was definitely well-handled. It would have been pretty neat to actually visualize what was going on in Spike's thoughts at that time, but it's really not relevant and would have drained time.

Have to agree with Chaz though -- they had a pretty elaborate backstory for the antagonist but it hardly was delved into when actually trying to take care of him. The concept of the first two episodes was there, it just felt a bit rushed.

Also, I wonder:

- I double-checked a previous episode just to make sure that this was in fact the case before: Princess Cadance has a crystal heart as her cutie mark...
- While she was the one to push the ponies of the Crystal Empire to use their powers for charging the Crystal Heart (and repel the King), I really wonder if there is a backstory between Cadance and the king... probably a bit too wishful in terms of thinking, but who knows.
