There is probably a pretty high chance that both computers are using eide harddrives. Depending on how new his current computer is it could possibly be SATA, but I'm guessing for EIDE.
Motherboards with SATA connections always have an EIDE connection too. But, an older motherboard with EIDE won't have SATa.
