I believe your playstyle is similar to mine. I strongly encourage you to do the style that's best for you instead of being like everyone else. I've been playing 1 finger - 3 finger for years with various combinations:
Started with the arrow keys, then changed too many dang times:
A [Down Arrow] [Up Arrow] [Right Arrow]
Q I O P
T Y U I
Z X C V
Q 7 8 9
And I think one time I tried Z 1 2 3
F G T H
Curent style (FFR and SM): G H Y J
So...yeah. Go with whatever works with you. I've gotten a couple AAAs but I really don't care about timing too much which is why most of the time I might have it off or masked.
If you don't start getting AAAs within a year, don't throw a hissy fit. If you're having fun playing, don't change your style. ^^
By making this post, I am not insulting anyone using a spread style, because that is the style you stuck with and is your style, and there's nothing wrong with that.
Also, maybe if I had more contact with the community when I was first starting out Stepmania, maybe I would be playing spread and sucking. I can't freaking play spread for my life >.<
