VOCALOID could potentially be used for speaking roles, but it's much more difficult. The engine is made to reproduce singing, so it adjusts sounds according to how a singer would produce them in a singing situation. That said, standard talking requires a lot of adjusting, and is more prone to the "Robotic Voice" effect. Also note that the Japanese VOCALOID, MEIKO, KAITO, リン・レン, 初音ミク are restricted to Japanese phonetics, thus making any sort of English speaking very difficult.
