Desktop composition can't be disabled on Windows 8+, so there aren't any options for it.

WaveOut should be the only option that matters anyways for this, VSync off only helps if your driver is set...

you can though, just make a copy of SM5 with a file called "Portable.ini" (it can be empty) in the game folder and it will be 100% independent of the main one.

Sorry then, read too much into it. I do agree that focusing on specific things helps, although I think making (more) compelling updates to theme and gameplay and having a better editor would do loads...

StepMania (as an engine) is not inherently unfixable. I already went down the road of writing a new engine and came to this conclusion.
