Whats next?

...Mines?

I'll continue my real post momentarily, but first I'll say hello to all my old friends here at FFR. I know I've popped my head in here and there but it was really only a strictly business thing and to check to see if 3rd style had finally come (All the enlargement pills in the world couldn't rival the result of my glance at the new layout and though that 3rd style had arrived).

I digress.

I played FFR today for the first time in about a year (If you look at my score they will tell a different story, I get on to play intermittently or to show friends that I'm not lying about this score or this score etc., etc., etc.) and I've noticed a bunch of new things. I'll categorize this into good and bad.

Good:
*There are a ton of new players, a ton of active players and I don't think I've ever seen the forum so busy before. I'm glad to see that some of my old friends are playing and are still topping charts :D

*The skill level has increased dramatically. I played Blue Army today. On my first try I comboed it. Granted the PA wasn't stellar but rather, my level of "Mediocre" sitting at around 60 or so goods and a couple boos, whatever. I expected after a score like that to EASILY breach top 50. I nabbed 103. It excited me to see that the playing abilities of everyone here jumped so much. it really does make me want to return and play.

*The Devs, I'm completely satisfied with how everything is turning out and the originality that spurs of it. The conventions, the widgets, the contests... Everything is done for the normal player and it is done correctly. These guys (maybe gals? I don't know, I haven't been paying close attention) deserve a ton of credit, and when I'm done with this post I'll probably go grab my card and donate a bit. For the subs. too.

*The Forums. Oh my have things changed. It is certainly an improvement from the old days. There are more people now with more helpful attitudes than the "LoLz u don't knowz how to chng sped mod!?/1 nuob." That could be because of the higher traffic, but I'm glad, whatever it is.

*The songs. With the permissions getting better, I wonder how the situation could get better! Somehow it usually does.

*Accessibility. I can get on and play this on virtually every computer. One of the things that I truly admire about FFR. And seemingly with every upgrade of flash it gets better.

*Av-miss fix, thank the lord synth and the dev team.

*Profile attract extra attention on the site, the new layout doesn't really let anyone flaunt their profiles too much, but I suppose it is better.

Now, for the Bad:

*"mines amirite?" -- Look, I'm all for hands and difficult files. However, I'm NOT cool with the over-stepping proficiency thing. After playing Blue Rose I was content until about the final minute. Nothing bothered me until I got to the mini jump jacks that seemingly lasted forever. If anyone remembers me, the one thing I loved was jacks. Blue Rose's case just made it completely unfun. I'm all for the difficult songs, but please please PLEASE, lets not turn FFR into "Flash"mania. If files are going to be accepted to that magnitude, we may as well let FFR run like resonance, and have it accept any heavily stepped stepfile that is approved by several people.

*Are Mines next? I wouldn't mind it completely, but it would just go to show how much we aren't thinking outside the box and are focusing on SM to tell us what to do. Skill tokens are new, Tokens are new. Infusions of these ideas are what makes FFR amazing. But mines would just be repetition... in flash format.

The good obviously outweighs the bad, but I played FFR to break from the monotony that SM gave. I don't need to be blinded by "a hundred" different colors in 3 or 4 seconds because it is "proficient" and "follows the beat."

--Thank you.

Re: Whats next?

I agree, FFR has been really good at creating new things that separate this from Stepmania.

Has someone mentioned putting mines into FFR? I have never heard that.

What is a mine? If you hit the arrow, you lose? lol What? xD

Re: Whats next?

A mine is a note that looks like an mine. (duh)
If you hit said note, you will lose points and life. (more so than just missing a note or getting a boo)

I agree with most of the post but let's hope that mines aren't next...

Re: Whats next?

Why not?
I would love mines, as they make the game more difficult and require more skill to avoid.
Also would keep people from ramming through songs like retarded monkeys.

Re: Whats next?

I think it's a little late in this current version's career to have something so game changing. Hands / quads aren't really game changing, they're just more arrows. The concept of mines, it's pretty different because it's maybe even the opposite of an arrow. Maybe in a future version (like there is an R2, maybe in R3), but I doubt it will be included in FFR_The_Game.

Re: Whats next?

If FFR comes out with mines i swear i will drop FFR the day it happends either that or i'll just whore the Non mine songs... more than likely the first one. hands and Quads are already turning FFR into FFRmania. Uhg.

Re: Whats next?

Mines are useless because boos exist. Sure, boos aren't that damaging to a score, but to the aspiring player, a mine==boo.

They are game altering when Quads and Triples are used as frequently as they are in jumpstream and "proficient" files.

Hey Buziel. FFR has changed, primarily for the better. I understand that when people are as close to the FFR forums as they are to home that things don't seem as though they have changed, but from the time I started my decline in activity (Around the 2nd official FFR tournament where I placed 5th and am still waiting for my mystery prize o.o) to now, things are drastically different.

At least, to me.

Re: Whats next?

Yes, but the same could be said about any pattern, even jumps, or perhaps a 400 BPM 16th stream. You could say that's making more "Stepmania files", even though it is essentially a stream, just faster.

As a concept, hands and quads differ very little, even if at all, from jumps and single notes. A mine is something completely different to think about, because it requires you to break how you have normally played FFR for however long you have played it, which is hit arrows, regardless of how many there are at a time. This is why I felt that such a new concept would be considered only in a different version.

And, I am not an administrator. Mines could very well be next.

Indeed, I was a member here in 2003, and forgot about it for years. Coming back only days ago, things sure have changed.

Re: Whats next?

mines will not be in FFR... as long as my voice is being listened to.

hands/quads are a recent addition, and are only in FMO/FGO files... and even then, i feel they're already a bit overused in some files. regardless.

to address blue rose... it was part of our recent FMO/FGO file event. so we pushed for harder and harder files. i suspect once we can get the avmiss fix beta of FFR to be public, you'll like that file a lot more.

glad that you like the direction that we're going with the game. there are so many more things we're working on that i wish i could share with y'all... but just like the layout re-design... you'll just have to wait until it happens to know about it.

Re: Whats next?

Don't get me wrong here guys, I'm not saying I want mines or any of that. I'm saying with the way that Stepfiles are stepping up now with the whole "quads" and "hands" I'm saying that it is really starting to resemble some of the more difficult SM files which are littered with that. But now Mines also accompany those hard files. I fear that they might be a later addition and I wouldn't like to see that happen is all.

Also Tass, I popped in just in time for the event. I'm cool with a couple. I suppose I'd have done a lot better on Blue Rose had I been using the av miss fix build, but I didn't. I don't really mind a few "Blue Rose" type files as long as it is kept in check. I'd rather have the more enjoyable playable songs, as opposed to vibration on the keys files. When I first came here, I set my goal to be able to play the classic songs proficiently, Vivace was so hard and still is difficult for me today, but a song like Blue Rose is out of that Category. It stands above and beyond what I believe is even a standard of fun and draws the DEFINITIVE line of Casual players and Competitive players. I suppose that that isn't so bad but I just don't want to see the game turn into a battle ground for competitive players. I looked at fotbb back then as players today look at vROFL or Blue Rose.

Re: Whats next?

are you sure you don't mean Death Piano? blue rose isn't THAT hard... and everyone seems to agree that it's an amazing file.

death piano on the other hand.... is just spam jacks and whatnot. it was made to be hard. pure and simple.

Loyal2Death 04-6-2008 07:07 PM

Re: Whats next?

Well mostly I'm referring to the one jump jack portion. Death piano yes. I already said I was cool with Blue rose, I just don't want to see 100 of them. The reason I use Blue rose is because it focuses much more on proficiency to the sound, I think that too much of this is a bad thing. Death Piano does the same but was obviously done in the most difficult way possible.

I'm all for mines. I dunno, but I really just find them so much fun to play with when used correctly.

Re: Whats next?

It's great how FFR is making so many updates and adding new things, while at the same time being divergent from StepMania. Eventually, FFR will become pretty popular and more and more bands will be willing to give permission to use their songs.

If you want your favorite bands to be on FFR, just tell everyone you know about it and spread the word of FFR!

P.S. Mines are noob.

Nightfirecat 04-6-2008 10:41 PM

Re: Whats next?

Yeah... I think that mines would make FFR too much like SM... It would kind of depreciate it...

Now holds... Perhaps, but even still, I like it the way it is right now, just songs need to be added more often... Seems like we're only getting one or two new songs a week other than song release events...
