Phase 1 - Music Drop

A small group of people are currently working on a new StepMania project that we'd like to keep somewhat under wraps. There are 4 phases. Phases 2, 3, and 4 are going to be completed internally. But for phase 1, we need your help.

Music Drop

This folder is set up so you can upload music. However, there are a few guidelines to follow if/when you decide to upload music.

The first, and most important, thing is that the music needs to be under a Creative Commons license. The licenses that are allowed:
  • CC0
  • CC-BY
  • CC-BY-SA
  • CC-BY-NC

The second thing is that you can upload any genre. That's right, any genre. We are looking for a wide diversity of music for the project.
Thirdly, song length should be anywhere between 1:00 and 6:00. The reason we are using CC-BY licenses is that it enables us to make cuts.
And lastly, songs should musically allow for charts. Do not think of potential difficulty. Rather, if you find a song that makes you think "damn this is a good song" and "I would like to have a chart for this song," you should upload.

Here are some websites where you can find music with these licenses:
http://freemusicarchive.org/
https://www.jamendo.com/
http://www.muzie.ne.jp
http://bandcamp.com/
Of course, there are more websites that offer music for free. Just be sure that the music that you find follows these guidelines.

Uploading music that follows these four guidelines helps immensely with the project.

And finally, if you are interested in hearing more about this project, hit me up on Discord at Choof#2621.

Thanks, bubs.

Whenever you upload a song, feel free to edit the description on the right of the page with a link to the original download location.

Phase 2 will begin when we have roughly 25 songs.

soundcloud defaults to "all rights reserved" when you upload a song, so for soundcloud I would recommend trying to contact the artist about using their music

bandcamp shows on the bottom of the page if a song is "all rights reserved" or CC licensed

I have some faint memory that soundcloud did have notes for CC licensing in the description at some point, but I don't know if that's a thing anymore.

Bandcamp has copyright listed under the tracklist on the release:

is what we're not looking for.

is what you'd want to find, it's also a link to the CC license.

e: choof beat me to it

So something I want to stress for everyone interested in this is to really think outside the box of typical songs that you'd expect. Yeah it's cool to have a bunch of Blastix Riotz soundalikes, or more breakcore or whatever genre Flashbulb is, but think about the other things too.

Don't think things like "Oh this song sounds cool but it's only 30bpm so I won't upload it"; send it in.

Don't think things like "Oh this song is pretty cool but I'm sure there's enough of ___ genre"; send it in.

Don't think things like "Oh this song is cool but do we really need another Lawn Wake IV?"; ...well don't send in Lawn Wake IV, but you catch my drift.

Just send a bunch of stuff that you think sounds nifty and fits the criteria.

Oh and also this is actually a really cool project, so believe in the choof.

bump

as you can see we have a fairly decent amount of music so far. but, most of it is electronic stuff. that's good, we need stuff that's "stebapple" but we also need stuff like rock, hip-hop, classical, etc. a wide diversity of music may cause the project to take a bit longer due to syncing, but the quality and amount of people it can reach grows quite a bit.

for rock music, bandcamp is your best bet, along with jamendo.
for hip-hop, datpiff (lmfao) is probably a good place to look. soundcloud rappers are all over the place, and they want the exposure.
for classical, I dont remember the site but jousway showed me a fantastic site with CC0 classical performances. edit: https://musopen.org/

thanks to whoever has uploaded music so far. some of it isn't tagged properly which is my fault. I'll go through this evening and tag things.

not my pack though. the project idea is mostly mine but it's a community effort, as it should be.
