FFR's Newest Deaf Player

My name is eMVy, I am completely deaf and I have been all my life.
I love to make music even though I have never been able to hear it myself.
I love playing FFR and Stepmania, I've just never made an account.
But, here I am, I hope we can be friends!

Welcome dude, just one questions -

Why do you make music if you cant hear it? Thats like painting and not seeing it.

Thank you for the compliment, TeRa, but sadly no, I have no speakers for this computer. I see no purpose.

You mean as far as what I think the song would sound like?

I know what is pleasing to the ear, I studied a lot of different sheet music and I found patterns within them and learned to write music, then I had several different instructors teach me to play violin, flute, oboe, and guitar. I can't necessarily tell if it sounds good or not, but I doubt teachers would tell me otherwise if it was not.

basically; what kind of feel you get from it, if you can determine what kinds of melodies/percussion might be present or when the mood of the song might change

for a song that's constantly changing itself up you wouldn't be able to get a good idea of how it plays, but if it's fairly consistent you could glean the individual layers being used and guess at what is what

I've sometimes played charts to songs I've never heard and imagined what they'd sound like but I'm terrible at it rofl, I can't figure out any more pitch than the limited four columns I can see so I come up with these really mechanical sounding melodies

That's pretty interesting to hear. Welcome!

So do you have any music samples we could hear?

Some songs I have been able to sense a specific tune to what it may be, but with only 4 arrows it becomes hard to tell. I'll think I've found the pattern and then it will switch on me. I would have more luck in that department if there were more directions the arrows could go, thus allowing for more intricate stepping.

In essence I could record some, if I had a device to do so.
I'll look into recorders and I'll get back to you on that, Ghakimx.

solo lol

or pop'n music or iidx

edit: although one tricky thing is that simfiles often vary patterns around a core central idea to prevent it from getting too repetitive; you'd have to guess from the context if it's being changed because the music is changing or to keep it varied

I have heard of Solo, but I've never figured out how to play it.
And I figured that much, and that lack of repetitiveness is what causes my inability to deduce the pattern of which the song is going by.

Well, I suppose I am a case in which it goes to show that anyone can do anything they set their mind to.

I have a deaf friend who plays Stepmania -- she can't hear any music but can obviously feel the bass.

Do you know ASL at all? You should drop by the VC sometime :D

Welcome to FFR

Welcome to FFR

I do know some signs, but I mainly rely on reading lips.
I will also look into getting a web cam for the video chat here.
So far everyone is a lot nicer than I expected, I will be more active now than ever.
