Re: Naruto's Ninja Way Voting

First of all, I think this file is extremely hard to step. Definitely a lot harder than the other groups. Also these are first impressions, without much of a technical approach.

Naruto's Ninja Way:

Ninja 1: I was really feeling the intro and rap parts, but man the dubstep section just felt really overstepped to me, did you use grace notes for the wub sounds? I think they're a bit much personally, I can tell the file is accurate and well thought out, but on 100% speed it just feels a bit too much..

Ninja 2: From the start I was really digging the minimalistic approach, although I found it pretty hard to determine whether you were stepping the vocals or the instruments. I think the distinction wasn't very clear at times. Towards the middle I felt the file spiked too much, and I get it. The song hasn't got much variety. So you need to switch the patterns up. However, I think you could have kept with the minimalistic approach and just followed a different instrument. Playing the file again though I think it's also one of the better ones.

Ninja 3: I get that some people want to go the dumpy approach, which is fine. Although I think dump files could be nice for FFR I think this particular dump file doesn't even go with the music much. Felt like you put down some fun patterns without taking the music into account.

Ninja 4: It's hard for me to see where the jumps and notes are going to sometimes, I think it's overstepped.

Ninja 5: This file is so much fun. There is a clear distinction between instruments and I really like the use of color-theory, no sections felt overstepped and everything flowed together well.

Ninja 6: Another good file, good PR, good structure. A bit hard, but very technically sound. Although in the middle a few of the jumps were a bit much for me.

In conclusion I think 5 and 6 clearly stand out here. With my personal preference going to 5

Guessing Ghost_Medley made Naruto 5.

Re: Naruto's Ninja Way Voting

1 - Very focused on making it fun to play for higher level players and does well in that regard, but I think it exaggerates a bit. It has an overly flat difficulty curve and doesn't represent the song particularly well. Also could use a cut.

2 - Layering through the wub parts doesn't feel very cohesive and with a weird difficulty curve. Also very tame stepping choices for such an energetic song, feels more like an intentionally subdued chart for the sake of making it easier. Good to see a cut but the cutting point doesn't work well with ffr's lack of a fadeout.

3 - haha yes. I actually think there aren't enough 24th-based jumpstream dumps, so in that context that's nice. Feels like it could be more conservative with one-hand trill usage, they are a bit too wonky for my tastes.

4 - I quite like the bursts & anchored jacks in the wub parts, not a big fan of how the rest of the chart was approached though. Could also use a cut.

5 - The verses were very good (my favorite between all subs). I think wubs were somewhat underwhelming though, especially the color theory stuff. Still fairly balanced overall and works well as a whole. Cut pls, though I actually like ending with that little silly part lol

6 - Overly dense for its own good and with some weird layering choices. I think a chart focused on the jacks for the wubs could definitely work, but not as it was approached here. Same thing as 5 with the cut.

Hard to choose as I think all charts are lacking in some regard, but I think as a whole 5 is the better file even if in practice I'd play 1 more.

1 & 5 are tied, voting will be open for 24hrs more for those two files. If you voted for something other than 1 or 5 you may comment to cast a vote for one of those files. If the tie is not broken in 24hrs it will be decided by a judge.

I change my vote from 2 to 5 for tie-breaking purposes.

I change my vote from 2 to 5 to break the tie. Speaking of 5, idk what the yellow/orange notes represent, and I can't tell if the green notes represent the vocals from Naruto, the vocals from the singer, the long wub-wubs, or all of the above.

I wonder how many people thought I was actually #5, hahah

The funny thing is that I'd totally understand if people thought my chart was DZ's and if I fooled people in that way, it's especially funny because DZ said in the Discord he was 99% sure which one was mine -- by virtue of not being his lol

Yea AJ, you didn't fool me by trying to imply you didn't submit :v)
Good show all around though, fun seeing the different interpretations and approaches to the songs as always. I will say I can't help but feel your chart is almost subdued to a fault and feels a bit underwhelming given the song just straight blasts energy pretty much throughout but it is the sensible, tried and true approach to making a file that appeals to the wide audience and will fit well on FFR. gg

Re: Naruto's Ninja Way Voting

We'll agree to disagree on the underwhelming/subdued point, and I'll say that I'm not the most fond of hearing it being "to a fault." But to be honest, that's just a choice of opinion. I could say the same thing about your chart being a bit too overaggressive to a fault -- though, I'd likely be lying if I didn't at least say that I'd have chosen a more aggressive/similar approach if I was making this chart without intent for competition for something like StepMania/osu!mania, which are both a bit more suitable for charts with that kind of aggression.

My chart went through a lot of revision and was a fair bit harder at first, though a lot of the difficulty initially came from bursts. Unsurprisingly, I wasn't fond of them and went through resolving them a few times. Being accessible was important to me at least for this chart, but striking the balance between having accessibility and still being notable is tough with a community that's generally fixated on higher level charts (as the overall curve of players on FFR that is active substantially leads towards higher level players).

If anything, I wish I'd have found a better way to tame the color bursts in the drops to not create some one-handed cameljacks at points. Having single taps simply didn't feel right, though. I tailored the burst patterning/speeds to at least be approachable to mid-level players while creating a fairly technical structure that's difficult to master due to some required control at points.

The hope was to create a file that was easy to score on but hard to master cleanly.

Thanks to everyone who voted for my chart, I really appreciate it. <3
