Yolomania Vol 1 - [Submissions Closed]

Yolomania Vol. 1
Pack Authors/Judges: Skwid, Wafles

I'm kind of a nobody around here so let me introduce myself. I'm Wafles, I used to play Stepmania eons ago as a 1 hand player and recently returned as a spread player last November. A few months ago I got into stepcharting and decided that making a pack would be the best way to give a little back to the community, so without further ado, I present Yolomania Vol 1. This pack is a joint effort between a couple players on Stepmania Online, namely Skwid and myself.

I am currently aiming for a release in the fall. Our goal is approximately 50 files. Even if me and Skwid have to make them all ourselves :p

Rules
This pack is intended for experienced players above all else. I am generally looking for difficult submissions, and fun MA files. Bring on the jumpstream, jacks, handstream, stamina, etc.

Only 1 chart is required. Multiple charts is not recommended, if you have a good reason for multiple charts please include why you made multiple charts with your submission. The reason for this is that the vast majority of players mostly play the hardest steps anyway.

Marathon files are acceptable but not preferred. The ideal chart is between 2 and 4 minutes. Anything over 6 minutes will have to be very fun to qualify.

Only high quality files will be accepted. Dump files can be high quality, just be mindful of the flow of the song. 2 of the 3 judges approving a file will result in its acceptance. If a file is not accepted we will explain why and give you a chance to improve it.

I would prefer not to have resteps of files that are already in popular packs. I will accept released singles since most people don't bother downloading them anyway.

Reviews are up to date as of August 13th

Wafles' file reviews:

(MrTea) Mindless Self Indulgence - Bitches (µ-ZIQ Remix)
Accepted after the fixes
The fixes improved the file immensely. The sync is pretty good now, and the inconsistencies are gone. Looks good now.

(XelNya) Konori (Ft. Megurine Luka) - Wings of Demise (UPDATED)
Conditional
Sync is perfect. File is very fun. Overall I really liked it. I love the minijack section in the file. Super fun.
At 12 seconds in you have stepped 16ths where there should be 12ths. This is the only real problem with the file and it didn't really bother me too much on my playtest, but I still feel this should be fixed.
EDIT: After skwid pointed out some inconsistencies I'm going to change my acceptance of this file to conditional. See skwids review coming soon for the exact issues that need attention.

(XelNya) HujuniseikouyuuP (Ft. Hatsune Miku) - With a Dance Number
Accepted
Once again the sync is perfect. Very fun file to me. Reasonable difficulty, not very stamina heavy. Good fun all around.

(MrTea) MrTea - Creative Flow
Rejected
I'm really not feeling this one. The steps are fine but I really don't enjoy a lot of breakcore in packs. The sync is consistently off by about 20 milliseconds, which alone isn't a big deal but the song is just uncomfortable to listen to and is awkward in length. This might be better suited for some other pack, the file really isn't that bad I'm just not feeling it.

(MrTea) Emotional Joystick - untitled gabber song
Rejected
Ugh. This isn't getting accepted for about a thousand reasons but the biggest is that we really don't need another chart for this file. I already had something like 7 different charts for this. Beyond this the steps are awkward. Why you chose to put the half galloped 64ths in (the green notes) is beyond me. It might make sense in terms of the drums, as they do sound a little bit swingy, but the difference is so negligible that 16ths would have made a lot more sense. My play test of this had a perfect instead of a marvelous on almost every single one of these green notes as a result.

(MrTea) Nvoise - Lazy Susan
Accepted
I like this file. Its got a good mix of difficulty and fun and the song is pretty unique compared to others in the pack. I definitely hope skwid agrees with me on this one so that it end sup in the pack.
(James May) hally - Bgrusko Meow
Accepted
Holy shit where did you find this song lmao. I love it. Awesome song choice, awesome steps. Seriously awesome addition to the pack, and a much needed easier file.

(James May) Parun - monocyclefromhell
Accepted
Another awesome song choice. Also super fun. The ending was surprisingly difficult, too.

(James May) Mowtendo - Nichismoke
Accepted
rofl. insta-accept

(James May) Alias Conrad Coldwood - Pepper Steak
Rejected
Few reasons I don't like this song. The swing rythms are a bit awkward to MA first of all. Not really your fault, but the song doesn't really provide excellent audio queues for the swings in the first place. Its also a bit too easy in my opinion, and didn't really seem to have much replay value. On top of that the song is just a bit too weird. Your other submissions had interesting song choices also but they were very catchy, this one not so much.

(MrTea) Venetian Snares - Marty's Tardis
Accepted
Obligatory Venetian Snares chart indeed. I thought it was fun. Stepped pretty accurately as well.

(MrTea) Die Antwoord - DIZ IS WHY IM HOT (MrTea Remix)
Rejected
Don't care for the song at all. Maybe try submitting this to that hiphop pack instead? I also think the steps are kinda boring. Too many slow sections.

(rCaliberGX) Rushjet1 - Exam Cram
Accepted
The jacky 16ths are hella fun to me, the 32nd streams are an absolute nightmare. Perfect fit for the pack, and a true challenge to any real speed player.

(XelNya) Konori (Ft. Megurine Luka) - Wings of Demise
Accepted
I'm not going to re-review your other file since its already in but I will update what I have with newer version you sent in. After your changes to this I'm going to accept this as well. Can't really think of anything new to say about it that I didn't say in my first review.

(MrTea) Venetian Snares - Winnipeg as Mandatory Scat Feed
Accepted
Patterns are interesting enough to justify a marathon breakcore file. I don't imagine this file catering to a lot of people but it is difficult and a pretty strong test of stamina speed and being able to deal with awkward patterns at 245 bpm. No more breakcore pls.

(bombastik) MiKUSABBATH
Rejected
Sorry man this just has way too many issues, the biggest of which is that the file is pretty off-sync. I also think it is too easy, the only hard part of the whole file is even pretty simple, and the rest of the file is just boring. I'm also not a fan of the song but thats besides the point.

(rCaliberGX) cornandbeans - {The Traveller}
Accepted
Aww yisss a cornandbeans file. I think this file is pretty sweet, sync is real solid during the bpm changes as well. Another reminder that I'm bad at constant 8th jump js. Really a solid file all around.

(rCaliberGX) ST2B Recording - Superluminal
Accepted
Another awesome JS file. This one hurt me, wasnt even close to the AA lol. Still a lot of fun.

(mrTea) Fexomat - Schlimme Dinge
Accepted
Holy shit wtf this is awesome. Easily my favorite file sent by you. Completely brilliant. Maybe contender for my favorite submission so far. God damnit Tea. You have fucked up tastes in music and this time it paid off. Massively.

(.Rarity) Foozogz - Applejack Bucks 400 Apple Trees
Conditional
Overall I thought this file was really fun but you have one really obvious mistake that irked me. Beat 99 during your second set of freeze jumps you have charted a jump on beat 99.25 where there should instead be one on 99.0 and 99.5. Your sync is also just slightly off (early by about 13 milliseconds, see http://i.imgur.com/TkislU5.png ). Fix these couple simple issues and I'll gladly accept it.

(Force) Timeless Miracle - Curse of the Werewolf
Rejected
You said you didn't really care if it got rejected so I'm not really gonna go into too much depth here. Bad layering, boring song, boring chart.

(rparty89) CanBlaster - Hardkore Atomic
Rejected
Ok this chart isn't actually bad at all and I probably would have put conditional with sync fixes if not for the fact that this chart has been released in at least 2 difficult kb packs already. It has a chart in HSMP12 and Rebound Vibrajack 2. I don't feel that this chart offers enough of a difference to really be accepted. As I said, the chart is also pretty off sync, so if you do decide to try and submit something different please verify that your file is on sync with ddream or something.

Not a huge fan of the song choice, but the file is very solid. It's accurate and fun to play. I see no major issues with it other than the file being slightly offsync even after the changes, but that's an easy fix.

(XelNya) Konori (Ft. Megurine Luka) - Wings of Demise
Conditional
The opening JS pattern is undercharted. The jumps you've placed aren't consistent with the instrument you seem to be charting. This same pattern occurs multiple times throughout the song and there are instances where you've charted the same part slightly differently.
The drum pattern at around 82.5 seconds is slightly mischarted and I think there are other instances of the same pattern throughout the song.
Even in its current state though, I really enjoy playing this chart and I like your minijack placement a lot. Amazing song choice as well. Sync is fine.

(XelNya) HujuniseikouyuuP (Ft. Hatsune Miku) - With a Dance Number
Accepted
Incredibly fun file. No sync issues. No major issues with how it's charted at all.

Pretty fun, standard dump file. It's onsync and I have no major issues with how it's charted. The beginning is kind of boring and lasts a bit long for my taste, but that's an issue with the song and not the chart.

This is a pretty sick chart. Not the catchiest song in the world or anything imo, but the chart more than makes up for it. It's really damn fun.

(MrTea) Emotional Joystick - untitled gabber song
Rejected
I almost didn't even play this file because of the fact that there are a couple pretty good (and well known) charts for this song already.

While the weird swing shit in a lot of the streams in this song is almost certainly technically correct, this is a case where I'd argue you should chart the song incorrectly if it means that it will flow better and be more fun to play. I just don't see a reason that someone would pick this specific chart of this song over any of the others.

(MrTea) MrTea - Creative Flow
Rejected
The actual chart for this song is fine, but due to the length of the song and the song itself, I really can't imagine this having much replay value, tbh.

(James May) hally - Bgrusko Meow
Accepted
Amazing song choice and chart with lots of variety. There seems to be a note missing at beat 212 but that's the only criticism I can think of.

(James May) Parun - monocyclefromhell
Accepted
Pretty unique-sounding song. Chart is really fun and I like the difficulty progression.

(James May) Mowtendo - Nichismoke
Accepted
This might be my new favorite parody song/MAD chart. Awesome song and chart. Not much else to say.

(James May) Alias Conrad Coldwood - Pepper Steak
Rejected
I think the chart on this one is accurate and well done overall, but it's a bit too easy for my taste. That alone isn't really reason to reject something, but I don't even think this would be a really fun MA file or anything due to the song choice. It just feels really slow and repetitive and I can't see this having much replay value.

(rCaliberGX) Rushjet1 - Exam Cram
Accepted
This chart is a lot more fun than the hsmp5 one IMO because of the cooler 32nd patterns and the less awkward jack sections. They're pretty similar otherwise, but this chart is different enough to justify having it around. I also think people will appreciate the fact that there are 2 difficulties on this.

(XelNya) Konori (Ft. Megurine Luka) - Wings of Demise
Conditional
I thought the previous iteration of this chart was pretty damn fun. Now it's even better (more minijacks <3), although I still feel like there are a couple of parts you could improve.
Why aren't there jumps at beats 10 and 10.5? It seems weird with how you chart the rest of this part. This part shows up multiple times throughout the song.
At beat 458.5, you charted an 8th jump when the jump should have been on the following 16th. It's wrong and inconsistent with how you charted the exact same part at the beginning.
Starting at beat 748, you chart this whole section in a completely different way from how you charted it earlier in the song, even though it sounds the same (jumps only on snare hits).
The drum part during the long left freeze starting at beat 240 is charted incorrectly. This same part shows up a couple more times.
If these things are addressed, I'd definitely accept this file. There aren't many problems with it, but I think the few that are present really break the flow of the file for me because they're so blatant.

(MrTea) Venetian Snares - Marty's Tardis
Accepted
Fantastic chart. Song is okay. Not much else to say.

(MrTea) Venetian Snares - Winnipeg As Mandatory Scat Feed
Accepted
Jesus this song feels like it goes on forever. The chart is great, filled with fun patterns and a good amount of variety.

(MrTea) Die Antwoord - DIZ IS WHY IM HOT (MrTea Remix)
Rejected
Eeehhhhhh. Unlike the files that I've accepted, this chart isn't fun enough to make up for the song not being very appealing to me.
I'm just barely in "accept" range with a lot of the files you've submitted, MrTea. I feel like a lot of your song choices make for great charts, but they just aren't catchy enough or don't vary enough in sound to make me want to play it again after the first time through.
It could definitely just be me though. Wafles could convince me otherwise.

(rCaliberGX) ST2B Recording - Superluminal

I expect to 1 great this about 100 times because I can't roll to save my life, but this is another hella fun JS file, with a good amount of variety.
Lots of replay value in both of these, imo.

(mrTea) Fexomat - Schlimme Dinge
Accepted
Welp...I can't really complain about the music this time, because it's pretty decent. On top of that, this file is amazingly fun, with a shitton of interesting and well thought-out patterns that make this file memorable.

(bombastik) Utsu-P feat. Hatsune Miku - MiKUSABBATH
Rejected
Yeah you definitely need to fix the sync on this, but even then, it's an overall easy chart with huge difficulty spikes that also feels undercharted.
There are just a lot of single notes where I think the chart should be more dense, like during the entire intro section (starting at beat 86).
Although honestly, I think even if it's charted a little more densely, it'll still be a mostly easy file with a few spikes of real difficulty, in the form of bursts and one relatively small JS, which makes for a pretty boring experience overall for people that can do the hard parts. I'd definitely re-evaluate it if you were to make changes, but I think it'd almost have to be a JS dump chart to really work.
The song is fucking awesome though.

(.Rarity) Foozogz - Applejack Bucks 400 Apple Trees
Conditional
I don't really have much input on this one besides what Wafles already pointed out, and I assume that'll get worked out. It's an otherwise really fun, solid, short file.

First wave of file reviews! I want to try and post file reviews as often as possible so that we can give feedback to the step artists who spent a lot of time on the files that got sent in. I will also try and nudge the other judges into posting timely reviews as well.

My reviewing process basically is as follows: I blind sightread it in stepmania, then open it in ddreamstudio to check the sync and accuracy. I figure this lets me determine how fun a file is and then if I missed any inaccuracies I can find them in ddream and point them out if they need revision.

Anyway, without further ado:

Once again the sync is perfect. Very fun file to me. Reasonable difficulty, not very stamina heavy. Good fun all around.

Just a reminder here, me accepting a file doesn't mean its in the pack, it means I approve it of being in the pack. If Ko7a and Skwid feel otherwise the file wont make it, but I think I'm pretty picky so I wouldn't worry too much.

Pretty fun, standard dump file. It's onsync and I have no major issues with how it's charted. The beginning is kind of boring and lasts a bit long for my taste, but that's an issue with the song and not the chart.

I think I might have a few more for this eventually. I'm going back and restepping some of the old files i discovered when I first started playing StepMania.

Woo, we definitely need more submissions. Send as many as you want lol.

Not so short update: This pack is moving fast, me and Skwid have been stepping a lot of files. I've been literally stepping 2 or 3 files a day, and maybe 1 in 10 have made their way to the pack. At the rate we're going, I'm going to TENTATIVELY plan for an October release. This of course assumes that I don't get bored of stepping files, and the same goes for Skwid. I'm not a fan of unreasonably big packs so if we get more submissions than I anticipate the pack will be released sooner. 50 files is the goal and we are already nearing 20 (!!).

On another note, we're looking for another quality control judge so that me and Skwid don't end up just auto accepting each others files without further criticism. Ko7a was going to be this person for us but I can't seem to get him to bother reviewing anything. I'll probably be looking around on SMO and asking people there, but I'm not opposed to anyone throwing their name out there here.
