No wonder I'm scared of fires
There was yet another fire from viewpoint of my apartment just now. It was in the brush next to the walking trail so it could've been bad, but the firemen were there at the same time I smelled the smoke.
Some teenagers purposefully burned some skids in the parking lot a couple years ago there, RIGHT next to the same brush-filled area...on a dry day. The old business on the other side of that parking lot caught fire this summer. Was so badly burnt that the building was demolished afterwards. A couple streets across the way someone's house caught fire last year, saw the flames from my window easily. And the piece de resistance, just across the street someone's house exploded a couple years back. They were on vacation and left the gas on or something. The shockwave shook my entire building. I thought the bombs were dropping or something before I saw the flames from the window. I've only lived where I am 3.5 years and witnessed 5 nearby fires. |
Re: No wonder I'm scared of fires
Your area sounds like a hot zone for fires. I'm not sure if that's just coincidence, or a combination of a dry climate and negligence. Where abouts is this?

Re: No wonder I'm scared of fires
I've always been attracted to fire, it might have to do with how much i enjoyed camping as a kid and roasting marshmallows on the open flame. I wouldn't call myself a pyro, but I sure as hell wouldn't go around burning stuff in a dry climate.

Re: No wonder I'm scared of fires
I'm quite excited by fire. I'd probably enjoy living here.

Re: No wonder I'm scared of fires
I think some people would enjoy the excitement. I mean, living where I do nothing ever happens and there's nothing to do. Most people can agree, and those who do have something to do say the stuff they do usually would be partying. If they want to do something, they usually go out of town or state. Maybe I'd prefer there over here.

Re: No wonder I'm scared of fires
It's not usually very dry. Yesterday it poured rain overnight, after they put out the fire. Summer feels hotter than it is because it's almost always humid. Fall is when we get tropical storms from up the coast. Spring is flood season. Winter's snow and ice time.
3/5 of the fires I've seen were started indoors. The kids burning the skids were just stupid...the parking lot's pretty big and empty, didn't have to burn it near the brush at all. |

There's a reason that the Chinese saying of "may you live in interesting times" is a curse. Just saying.
