[Open] Cave Story Full-KB Pack

Synopsis: Full 4key charts for every song in Cave Story, 3-6 charts per song, plus 5/6/7/8 key charts where created. Designed as charts to be played on spread or a controller or touch screen interface, not for pad.

Motivation: Cave Story's music has several desirable qualities:
1) It is well known for its gameplay and for its music and has the potential to be searched for.
2) Its music is consistently good and emotive.
3) The music is sequenced, constant bpm, predictable offset, normal time signatures, etc. and is very easy to step because of this.

As for the type of stepcharts itself, the following reasons are given:
1) Keyboard play lacks dedicated packs that beginners can start play on. Pad packs use different techniques and employ different representations of songs, and going from pad files, even hard pad files, to spread design files is being thrown in the deep end. Keyboard-like files can be easy - think of DJ Max portable/trilogy, IIDX, pop'n music and so on. Such keyboard files should employ pitch relevant, layering, instrument following etc techniques that harder keyboard files do, but intended for lower densities and easier to follow rhythms/combinations.
2) A secondary goal is that it will port nicely over to Beats and other mobile stepmania emulators. When they want pad charts, they don't want pad charts because you're going to play pad on your phone (that's silly), they want pad charts because people make pad charts easy. Keyboard charts can be esay too.
3) Because of the wide familarity and relative straightforwardness of Cave Story music, it will be a good introduction to playing.

How to submit to this pack:
1) Download the skeleton below. It contains all the songs that are available for stepping, and pre-synced .sm s for them so you don't have to exert a single pound of effort to get started. (By the way, if there's a Cave Story remix that's substantially rhythmically different from the ones in the game that you'd like to see stepped, feel free to recommend it)

--> CAVE STORY SKELETON: http://www.sendspace.com/file/fhmtj6 <--

2) Pick a song and a number of columns and step 3 to 6 charts for the song. Rules for the charts you make:
2i) Rate each chart according to its Notes Per Second, rounded to the nearest integer. That is, number of taps/(timestamp of last tap - timestamp of first tap). If your easiest chart is not rated a 3 or less, make an easier one.
2ii) Follow all the techniques that you'd usually follow for making a spread chart. If you don't know what that involves, study packs like Patashu Solo Beginner Pack and rhythm games like IIDX, Pop'n Music and DJ Max Trilogy and see how they do it. If you need tips, I've written guides here and there - go find one!
2iii) If your hardest chart would be considered 'bull****' or 'an overlayered piece of poop' make sure it's on the Edit slot.

3) Upload the .sm to your preferred hosting site and post it here. The post should be labelled with the name of the song, your stepartist name and the modes you stepped it for (e.g. 4key, 4key+6key). However, the .sm itself should not credit you in any way, and you do not need a cdtitle.

From most to least preferable, I want charts stepped in the following modes:
-4key. To prevent confusion from people with autogen on, every song that ends up getting stepped should have 4key charts stepped for it. (Doesn't mean it has to be stepped FIRST, however.) Every other mode is optional. Ubiquitous and will reach the widest audience.
-5key. Over at beatsportable.com the maker has included adding piu mode on the to-do list. Anything that isn't 4key is going to have an audience an order of magnitude less, but this is second best for this reason.
-6key. Join the hype solo rulz etc. More beginner packs are always welcome. Not asymmetric like 5key, doesn't feel like it has too many keys, yet has so much more potential than 4key.
-7key. Imo this won't catch on for ages but if you really want to step this I won't stop you.
-8key. Even more niche then 7key but might make for an interesting mode to play if there are enough charts to practice on, so...

==Graphics==

If you want to help out with graphics, read this topic: http://www.flashflashrevolution.com/...d.php?t=115429

tl;dr: take a good screenshot in every place/cutscene where you first hear a song and those will be use as the bases for the graphics

Re: [Open] Cave Story Full-KB Pack

Just so you guys are aware, -1.560 is not always the correct offset. Get Heart Tank! and Get Item! use -1.580, then Game Over uses -1.550 for some reason.

EDIT: -1.580 seems to be correct more often than not.

In case that didn't give away what I was doing just then:

38 Got Item! - 4key - Patashu
39 Got Heart Tank! - 4key - Patashu
40 Game Over - 4key - Patashu
41 Victory! - 4key - Patashu

http://www.sendspace.com/file/bvzqr9

that's all of the fanfares stepped for 4key :snipe:

I'll do some real songs tomorrow bed time

p.s. I know I broke the nps rule in that one beginner chart is a 4 and one is a 5, but keep in mind that it's not 4-5 nps for a full song length but only for three seconds

Re: [Open] Cave Story Full-KB Pack

Fun pack idea, rawr.
Hm, well I'm going to see what I can do with (09) Mischievous Robot and (36) Toroko's Theme...

And I was kinda wondering about, like, Pop'n Music's 9-key... Does anyone do that on keyboard?

Patashu 11-14-2010 10:30 PM

Re: [Open] Cave Story Full-KB Pack

yes they do, pop'n music emulators and songpacks exist (e.g. toy musical) but 9key is even less preferable than 8key unless you know how to get penetration in the pop'n music emulation community. if you do then by all means go ahead but I won't be able to verify quality

Re: [Open] Cave Story Full-KB Pack

progress report: I did about half of gestation's charts, then I got distracted by tasselfoot wanting me to step some **** for TS (so I stepped some ****). then I got distracted by my cobalt flux arriving. <.<;
I apologise profusely for slacking off so much. I'll try and get some stuff up tomorrow

Definitely will keep my eye on this :) If I had any stepping ability I would love to help with this...but I dont.

Hope to see some quality work :D

Re: [Open] Cave Story Full-KB Pack

k, Gestation is done. 1/2/4/6/-/-. I was going to make an oni but realized it was already really dense, just slow. maybe for 5/6key there'll be an oni

Cemetary is 1/3 so far
