All purpose IM

Hey all. Before i ask a question let me explain my situation. I have a lot of friends that i like to chat to over im. Only problem is that some of them prefer yahoo, some prefer aim and some prefer msn (my personal fav). Is there an im program out there that can handle all 3? Tried googling with no results.

I prefer gaim.

Actually there are many programs that do what you're asking. gaim and trillian are probably the most popular though.

Adium is a great choice on the off chance you use a Mac.

Does Trillian have a conversation logging feature? I know the new AIM does and that is one of my favorite features.

It does.

The problem with Trillian, though, is that being a jack of all trades, it misses out on the features which make each service unique. For example, no custom emoticons, voice clips, etc, for MSN, no sending folders for AIM, and whatever else I missed, not to mention a non-default emoticon set which makes it hard to tell if whomever you're talking to sees the message in the same way. But if you don't give a damn about those things, by all means, go with Trillian.

Yea, if you do any ammount of file sharing, I would really not go for Trillian, cause it fails miserably at it. Trillian does best at duplicating AIM, but for Yahoo and MSN it fails, other than the IMing features, but if that's all you use MSN and Yahoo for then that's fine. Just a heads up though, when I tried using Trillian I lost half my buddy list...I may just be an idiot (more-than-likely) but yea...just be careful lol. I'm the only one who I know it's happened to though, so probably not much to worry about there

The one problem I have with Trillian is: You can't set it to always log you on as 'Invisible' or 'Appear Offline'.

Typing Gaim in all caps is incorrect. It is not an acronym.

I absolutely hate Trillian because of how it doesn't do anything that I'm used to AIM doing for me, but I only use AIM and Skype, so I don't have a need for such a program.
