PC on or off
Hello everyone,
I was wondering how everybody thinks about letting your pc on while you are not using it while you are at work, school or something like that. I'm fellowing an edacution for system administrator. My opinion is that is better to turn your pc off, because everytime you turn off your pc it refresh your RAM and register so your pc can run at full speed and it is better for your enery costs. At the other hand the computer parts wear off more quick and it cost more time before your pc is fully started up. What are the opinions about it? |

Re: PC on or off
Starting your computer from a "cold boot" causes a rush of power for a split second which isn't very great for your hardware, but other than that and boot time I don't really see any other advantages. With SSDs becoming more prominent boot times are going to be a fraction of what they used to very soon for most consumers. The power it takes to run your standard Desktop/Laptop with the screen off is still something to consider since a reboot really isn't such a big deal. Also I have a feeling the longer Windows is running which I use as my main station the more garbage it kinda picks up and has to roll with, or maybe it's just me and Windows doesn't do that like it used to. With the ARM processor architecture on the rise computers are going to be using a lot less power but that still isn't going to be for a little while for "Desktop users" if we still exist at that time.
But yeah anyway I think it's mostly a power issue and the fact that turning your computer off/on isn't a big deal. I only keep my server running 24/7. |

And yeah i have the same feeling about Windows too. That's why i reboot everyday for a clean register and RAM-memory. |
Re: PC on or off
When my desktop worked I kept it on all the time. Now that I'm on my laptop all the time I just turn it off before bed.

Ah, the age-old question of "Which is better for my computer? Turn it off or leave it on when I'm not using it?"
I'll tell you right now you will get conflicting answers depending who you ask, even among professionals. Basically the initial power surge when you turn your computer on isn't good and produces microscopic wear and tear but leaving your computer on will produce wear and tear as well. I would say don't excessively or obsessively turn your machine on-and-off, but, other than that, do what you want. Putting a nice UPS between your computer and the power outlet isn't a bad idea either. |
Re: PC on or off
desktop i would leave on.
laptop lmao **** that shit turn it off when not in use unless im torrenting |
Re: PC on or off
I leave my computer on for thousands of hours. It's a vista, so it takes lifetimes to turn on and off. xD

Re: PC on or off
Keep it on for weeks. Only restart when I really have to.

Re: PC on or off
Won't leave it on over night, would leave it on if I left my house at 1 or something, even if I wouldn't be back for several hours.

But i still have the same about desktop parts if you left it on all the time the lifetime would be also shorter in my opinion. |
Re: PC on or off
I usually just log off and turn off my monitor, and shut down my computer about 1-2 times per week.

Re: PC on or off
It only takes 5-10 seconds to turn on my computer because of my solid state, but I still generally leave it on unless I am leaving it for several days.
There are actually problems with leaving it on and turning it off so you probably have to find some medium between the two. I'd imagine as long as you have stable temperatures than you are doing little damage to your hardware, but over time things always wear down. Turning on and off your computers a lot can cause damage because of the extra startup jolt and if a piece of hardware is near its end and you turn it off that might be the last time it will ever be on. My pc has been powered on 77 times since I got it 2 months ago. A number of those were probably when I first put the thing together and I swapped harddrives a lot. But it seems that it has been on for 1 month and 17 days out of the 1 month and 19 days that I've had it. |
Re: PC on or off
Lmfao, I never shut down my 2010 HP laptop and there's next to no problems with it- apart from hardware issues caused by my negligence. Uptime on that thing would reach a couple thousand hours before I really had to restart it due to random issues, or if thermal shutdown occurred by playing Portal or something.
But now I have my Asus, the HP lives under my bed, -off- and I shut down the Asus overnight. During the day, I leave it on sleep. |
Re: PC on or off
I just passed 82 days of uptime.
