I hope this happens just so I can see content creators lose their collective shit

like it says, it'll be lifted if oracle gets the distribution rights

oracle seemed to have won their bid in the dumbassest way because they probably know people, and leaving the decision to trump seems to like, preempt a lot of antitrust eval that would otherwise go on

deep sigh

tiktok ban is fine

the wechat ban is a bit more of a problem, since wechat is also used by millions of chinese-american citizens to keep in touch with people at home. a better way to go about doing this, if you want to increase economic tension, would be to just filter out wechat transactions at the processor gateway level

in one breath, we should take more of a solid stance against china in general, everyone should, but in another breath this doesn't seem like the best way to do it by far

From what I've read on the internet, but cannot verify, this is only a ban from it being on app stores in the region. It's not preventing people from actually using it or making it a crime from using it. Because it's not in the app stores, it can't be updated unless the device is jailbroken or something.

This actually sounds like the beginning of a form of censorship though.

For the ignorant me who knows nothing about TikTok culture, why is this important and what is the potential ban reason ? Just legit curious

ban reason is being based in China, and companies based in China are required to fork over data to the government if deemed necessary.

TikTok is a social media giant, but there are other options. Wechat is basically china's equivalent to Skype/Discord. It also functions as a payment option.

while i personally don't like tiktok (too much of a boomer for that shit) this is one hella bad move. mi40's right-- this isn't about us security. us and china have been going at it for a while

i hope tiktok is not actually banned.

edit: this move would adversely affect tiktok financially. the us doesn't supply the majority nor plurality of tiktok users but they generate a lot of revenue regardless. this is like kinda whatever but it's like annoying that the us is targeting a business due to foreign relations. tiktok has a us branch too. it's not like you're targeting just china through tiktok

also i play love nikki which is run by elex which is a chinese company. y'all BETTER NOT. played for TOO DAMN LONG for y'all to scream SECURITY on a DRESS UP GAME

That's more mean spirited than a lot of the things I have to say.

Right? Which makes this whole thing super hypocritical. It's a joke that TikTok is even getting banned in the first place. Trump gets info from one source stating that being the case, and all of a sudden 'tech giants that process american data outside of america' is bad, and starts with the biggest.

Says a lot about what they don't pay attention to in their own country.

Re: TikTok soon to be banned from U.S.?

If anything, it just means Trump is throwing this kind of a fit. It's not even that big of an issue compared to the rest of the shit we've had to deal with in recent months. Personally, I can understand a number of reasons why the ban should take place, but like someone else pointed out on this thread, this is a very bad move.

As stated earlier, tension between the States and China is nothing new. That's been going on for the last few decades at least, possibly longer than that. What bothers me is why Trump to no one's surprise would ban this social media platform giant just because "it's based in China." On what grounds can he prove this? I can neither confirm nor deny that China is using data from the app from users who have downloaded it IN THE STATES, but this type of move is heavily redundant. Personally, I never had any interest in downloading TikTok ever, but I'd feel like a villain if I believed that no one else should either.

Because of this move, as you would expect, there's naturally going to be a massive public outcry about the move by younger people that use the app for whatever reason, whether to get a message across, sharing their life experiences, or just sharing random things that they think are funny/entertaining, which there's nothing wrong with. Once the ban is effectively in place - and no doubt Trump will push to make that a reality - one of two things will happen: People will either complain for a few weeks and then simmer down when ultimately a new, yet very similar app launches and start the whole chain over again, or worst case scenario, many people in the States will go into protest mode and like the George Floyd case, damages will occur everywhere like a huge city during a tornado that won't die down.

One thing I CAN promise though: There are going to be a lot of angry young people on social media ranting about why TikTok is no longer available for download in the US, and it's going to be one massive shit show I don't think anyone is ready for.

Oh I cannot wait for the angry mobs of teenagers screeching on Twitter and Facebook. It shall be glorious.
