What is your strategy in this game?
 

I hate it when people that don't play this game tell me how simple it is to just try to push the buttons at the right time. I use a complicated strategy that clearly shows that kind of nonsense is false. Here's what I like to do:

If the song is difficulty 1-56: Just play for PA since it's likely easy to combo and even if I miss I can probably just restart the song and get an FC one of those times and then when I do FC it will be with pretty good PA.

If the song is difficulty 57-80: Play for PA except on the hard parts to combo and then be more careful on those trying to not miss. If I miss and won't be able to get better than my old best combo, then play for PA the entire rest of the song even if it is a hard section. But if you already have a good score on the song then only play for combo on little enough of the song that if you do manage to full combo it you'll still beat your old best score.

Difficulty 81-99: Play mostly for combo except on the easy parts where you can go for PA. Don't be afraid to mash if it helps keep the combo going. But if you know you can't get past the max combo you've already gotten then try to maximize your raw score, which means only mash if you absolutely have to.

Difficulty 1-88: Anti-PA everything
Difficulty 89-99: PA everything

89-95: work my way up to AAA

96+: gay

Yeah I whored vrofl trying to get 300000 credits lol. I should have at least gotten Dendrite v2 out of that but I didn't restart the song when I broke my combo so I didn't reach 500M on the day. But that's not my usual strategy.

Oh and I forgot one of my favorite rules: As long as you still have an AAA going, always go for the AAA unless it's a song you know you can't AAA.

A song without jacks or trills: Try to AAA or at least get good PA.
A song with jacks or trills: Do terribly.

This is pretty useful. One of my problems is that I tend to not go for the AAA while AAAing a file.

I can't do that at all.

Also, the two tokens, Oni and Scarhand, they're the ultimate mind fucks of the game in disguise.

If you're about to get Oni, try not to think about it because most likely you'll be going "GAH" and then screw it and get angry.

Same thing with Scarhand, try not to think about it because... yep, most likely you'll get too nervous and mess up.

Best strat: enjoy the game, play what you feel like when you feel like it. Don't think about what you are doing or why, enjoy the gameplay, the artistry behind the stepfile, and enjoy the music.

When the game isn't fun for you anymore, take a break. It's not a job, nobody here is professional and getting paid to play and force themselves to constantly improve... it's a game.

How I got better: play high level songs without worrying about combo.
Learn to manipulate patterns (jumptrilling rolls).
Go back to some of the lower levels and own them now that you have been playing high level songs all day.

when I used to play (lol wrists):

1-60: Ignore like the plague
60-70: play once every like 6 months, try to AAA if I land on one by chance.
70-80: warm up, try to beat my PA from the last time I played
80-100: concentrate, PA, not really concerned about combo. Work on my weak points by practicing certain files.

I never really was concerned about AAAing, but whenever I tried I never was able to do it. So it's definitely a whole other skill to practice.

edit: another good thing to do is play for a bit (2-3 days), take a break for a week or so, and come back. Take it easy.

as for actually playing the songs and hitting arrows "when they should be hit" is by dividing the song into chunks, and playing them while thinking of those small chunks. I also try to only watch yellow and purple notes, as those are the most common notes in most stream. This helps me subconsciously deal with the reds, the blues, and the oranges without thinking about it too much.

getting into the beat is also another good strategy. You're less likely to miss notes if you do.

Only play only the songs that sound good to me. They just so happen to be hard as all hell songs lol. But no matter what it is, I go for the best possible pa I can get, leave it alone for so long I forget it(because if I do get a good pa and try to AAA it, it almost never happens because I'm already mindblocked by the entire file), and go for the AAA again another time. The easier files I see as fluff, and just nab the AAA if I'm really bored and just want to increase my AAA count.
