Survey: Define "good" music.

I posted this about a year ago, and I'm curious to see if people's view on "good" music has changed at all. I'll be posting in a bit.

0. What is/are your favorite genre(s)?

1a. What do you consider good music, either in general or in concrete examples?
1b. How about bad music?

2. Are you biased against some genres because of the fans they tend to attract?

3a. Do you make assumptions about fans of particular genres?
3b. What are some of the stereotypes you are familiar with?
3c. What stereotypes exist about fans of your preferred genre?

4. What role does a band/artist/genre's popularity play in your like or dislike for them/hir/it?

5. Do you think you have good taste in music?

6. How objective do you think you are when you judge music?

7. Do you judge artists/bands on their entire body of work, or on a song-by-song basis?

8. Do you consider your choice of music part of your identity, image or public persona?

9. Have you ever made choices in music based on what your peers might think of you? (For example, do you avoid a certain genre because your friends think it is without merit? Do you listen to genres you don't particularly like because your friends like them?, etc.)

10a. How do you feel/react when someone states an opinion contrary to yours regarding music in general?
10b. What about particular songs/artists/genres?

Re: Survey: Define "good" music.

Not gonna answer all of these since it's getting late, but i'll do #1.

A good band is one that isn't Nickelback.
A bad band is Nickelback.

Glad to help with the survey!

Re: Survey: Define "good" music.

0.) Favorite Genres: Indie (Death Cab for Cutie), All forms of electronic (house, dub, progressive you name it), psychedelic rock (MGMT), blues, classic rock, classic funk, new age rock, country, 90s music (Bare Naked Ladies, Counting Crows, Smash Mouth), 80s music (Talking Heads ect ect), 70s, 60s (Dire Straights ect ect), Old school Hip-hop (jurassic 5, atmostpher), pop, alternative, rap.

1a.) I consider good music to have good instrumentals with a fair about of lyrics or good lyrics with a fair about of instrumentals (Dave Mathews Band).

1b.) Hard Metal and Screemo

2.) Yeah look at hard metal heads and people who like screemo

3a.) No i see it from the media (which can be made up, but after seeing recurring evidence i believe it)
3b.) Screemo people enjoy other hardstyle things like tongue piercings and drugs.

4.) Say smooth rock like Dave Mathews Band or Jack Johnson - we are flaming and old people music

5.) I do i have a wide range of preferred genres as seen above.

6.) I dont think i really am, i play instruments i understand music

7.) I try to string song by song before i hit the entire body of work. Many artists make different albums through the years to appeal to new crowds and try knew things (look at Maroon 5)

8.) I think it shows im open to new things. I wouldn't go so far as to getting tattoos over it or being an artistic hipster-type person.

9.) Nope my friends hate it when i listen to some good ol country :)

10a&b.) We can agree to disagree.

11.) The piano and singing

12.) My older brother used to alot, now its pandora, grooveshark, explorin the youtube

13 in general.) They have not changed, they have expanded i still like the music i did many years ago along with the music i like now. Im an open person.

14.) Everyone should give other music a shot. Music is a huge representation of culture and if you cant even give a different genre one listen to because of your stereo-typical bigotry then you should probably go live in a cave.

I have no set genres that I consider better than the others. And my choices are so differing that it would be very confusing to place one in front of the other. If I had to choose, then I'd have to say it's a cross between ambient, rock, psychedelic, classical, jazz, noise, trance, etc.

Quote:

1a. What do you consider good music, either in general or in concrete examples?
I think good music is when all of the different parts and all of the sounds manage to blend together into a perfect harmony. Everything just sounds pleasing to the ears, and you have a wonderful time listening to it. It's the kind of song that makes you go 'Wow... Now that is worth remembering". And while the song might not be pleasing to another person's musical palette, does that mean that another might not enjoy it? It's all subjective.

Quote:

1b. How about bad music?
Dissonance isn't really my forte when it comes to music (which makes no sense, considering that I willingly listen to Merzbow). Which is why I never listen to the radio. Either something doesn't match up, something sounds really off, or something shouldn't be there. It feels too easy, too simple. And while I love simplicity, I don't enjoy dirt easy experiences. I want to take something for all it is worth and hopefully remember upon it for days to come.

Quote:

2. Are you biased against some genres because of the fans they tend to attract?
Yes. Plain and simple. There are some genres I love, and some genres I despise.

Quote:

3a. Do you make assumptions about fans of particular genres?
3b. What are some of the stereotypes you are familiar with?
3c. What stereotypes exist about fans of your preferred genre?
I tend to ignore stereotypes, as they add nothing to the musical experience. If they enjoy one thing, that doesn't make them a terrible person simply because I don't enjoy it. And if I think that, then who is the bad person here?

Quote:

4. What role does a band/artist/genre's popularity play in your like or dislike for them/hir/it?
Again, popularity doesn't really bother me when it comes to the music, unless their "fame" is merely infamy. Do I like bands that tend to be popular? Yes. And while the musical industry is flawed beyond a doubt, it still takes a great deal of effort to get noticed, let alone famous/infamous. At least, I feel as though it does.

Quote:

5. Do you think you have good taste in music?
That depends. Do YOU think I have a good taste in music? It's all a matter of opinion. Notice how I haven't been namedropping any of my preferred bands (aside from Merzbow)? Because I know that if names were placed, then you, or others, would either void or warrant what I say because of the factors placed. If I take the factors out, then it's nothing more than an even playing field. Now, personally, I feel as though my taste in music isn't very experienced, so I cannot comment further upon it.

I'll finish this up later. Maybe.

13c. If yes, in what way?

Sometimes the opposite happens. :)

0. What is/are your favorite genre(s)? Every subgenre of Metal, Progressive Rock, Post-Rock, Indie Rock/Pop, Folk, Electronic...

1a. What do you consider good music, either in general or in concrete examples? Music that can change you as a person.
1b. How about bad music? Music that you try listening with a personnal point of view without considering critics/fans/popularity/genres clichés and you still doesn't like.

2. Are you biased against some genres because of the fans they tend to attract? Not really, I'm mostly attracted to a band because of his music, not their fans.

3a. Do you make assumptions about fans of particular genres? Sometimes, but I try not to.
3b. What are some of the stereotypes you are familiar with?
3c. What stereotypes exist about fans of your preferred genre?

4. What role does a band/artist/genre's popularity play in your like or dislike for them/hir/it? As long as the artist makes good music it doesn't matter if their popular or not.

5. Do you think you have good taste in music? From my point of view, I have the best taste in the world. For everybody's else point of view, my tastes are like everybody else.

6. How objective do you think you are when you judge music? I try to give everything its chances. When I don't like it, I skip it.

7. Do you judge artists/bands on their entire body of work, or on a song-by-song basis? Song-by-song basis.

8. Do you consider your choice of music part of your identity, image or public persona? Yes, mainly part of my identity.

9. Have you ever made choices in music based on what your peers might think of you? (For example, do you avoid a certain genre because your friends think it is without merit? Do you listen to genres you don't particularly like because your friends like them?, etc.) Music is very personnal for me and I have difficulties sharing it with others. That said, I make my choices based on my tastes.

10a. How do you feel/react when someone states an opinion contrary to yours regarding music in general? If it isn't offensive/derogatory, I try to understand why he/she thinks this way.
10b. What about particular songs/artists/genres? Everybody has an opinion on everything. Mine differs from everybody and I try to not be affected by theirs. Sometimes it can ruin an album or a band if you believe everything a person says.

11. Do you have formal musical training? (Such as receiving singing lessons, playing an instrument, etc.) I had guitar lessons for a year and I play drums on my own since 2-3 years.

12. Who influences your choice of music most? How do you find new music? Through which channels? Through advertising/word of mouth/YouTube/reviews/other? rateyourmusic.com is my starting point. It's the easiest way for me to find new music that I like.

13a. Have your tastes or preferences changed over time? A lot, yes.
13b. If not, why not?
13c. If yes, in what way? I remember listening the Hanson or Spice Girls when I was 7-8. I'm happy I changed. Like really. Then I discovered blink-182, Sum 41, Green Day, The Offspring. Then System of a Down and metal. And so on.

Oo, this looks fun. I don't remember seeing this a year ago but let's go for it anyway:

0. What is/are your favorite genre(s)?
Depends on the mood; usually jazz hop is usually never a bad choice for me though. Orchestral (not limited to classical) is usually pretty nice too

1a. What do you consider good music, either in general or in concrete examples?
I don't think that this is very easily defined because different people are attracted to different tastes/genres. A lot of people try to trash mainstream music, but it isn't always popular just because of social protocol (although it may or may not have a large part to do with it). I'll recommend shit to my friends all the time, and they won't always like what I pick out for them; the same goes for when they ask me to listen to things. So, to be as vague as possible, good music is defined as music you enjoy listening to. It doesn't matter why you enjoy it - it's catchy, or beautiful, or innovative, or humorous - the fact (opinion) of the matter is, you think liked it. And it will keep you coming for more.

1b. How about bad music?
Opposite of good music pretty much: things relative to the listener that they dislike. Just for me personally, I don't think my reactions to bad music have ever been as significant as reacting to a bad taste, or smell, or visual; maybe I just have a dulled sense of musical taste. But I'll call something bad if I think it's bad.

As a sidenote, there's a difference between hilariously good music and hilariously bad music. To make it a little clearer, I don't propose anyone listening to hilariously bad music by themselves to enjoy it; listening it to share with others is almost always the case.

[Edit] Mastering and mixing /sound quality can have a lot to do with how someone enjoys a track tbh. I mean I'm not talking like YOU GOTTA HAVE LOSSLESS BRO, but if you're hearing the clipping or noise from tracks that don't have them, it might affect your enjoyment

2. Are you biased against some genres because of the fans they tend to attract?
Genres, no. Artists, sometimes.

3a. Do you make assumptions about fans of particular genres?
3b. What are some of the stereotypes you are familiar with?
3c. What stereotypes exist about fans of your preferred genre?
Yeah. And honestly, I'd call bullshit to anyone who doesn't make SOME stereotype. Highlighting "oh, well I knew this one preppy white dude who listened to underground hiphop all the time" is anecdotal and just makes it more emphasized that a genre carries a certain fan stigma. I really wish that these stereotypes didn't happen because it restricts taste.

tl;dr dem nigs be listening to their rap erryday spewing sick lyrical genius about dat monie and dem bitches and dem cars amirite

idk any real stereotypes about jazz hop enthusiasts, but if you guys know any feel free to enlighten me. I don't think I've met a person who has actively hated or disliked on someone like Nujabes before (I mean, his death is kind of a symphathy card and all and it's probably a confounding variable here, but still)

4. What role does a band/artist/genre's popularity play in your like or dislike for them/hir/it?
I think that it used to for me, but I 'grew up' I guess. When I first got into stepmania, I had that hipster vibe where I basically just listened to "stepmania music" (sup Sharpnel, sup Benn, sup Dream Theater). But it's different now, and I'll take a liking to anything if it sounds good to me.

5. Do you think you have good taste in music?
Based on 1a), I'm gonna have to go with............ of course! (o:

6. How objective do you think you are when you judge music?
I try to listen with an open slate, but bias can run subconsciously.

7. Do you judge artists/bands on their entire body of work, or on a song-by-song basis?
Song-by-song, usually. Again, artist bias creeps in every once in a while.

8. Do you consider your choice of music part of your identity, image or public persona?
I tend to be pretty personal about my music, so it's not something publicly identifiable other than the people who know me. I've been opening up a little more lately though.

9. Have you ever made choices in music based on what your peers might think of you? (For example, do you avoid a certain genre because your friends think it is without merit? Do you listen to genres you don't particularly like because your friends like them?, etc.)
In the past, I might have avoided things my friends liked (~hipster~), but again, it's different now. As an observation though, this phenomenon is real and occurs pretty often (like what I mentioned about mainstream earlier).

10a. How do you feel/react when someone states an opinion contrary to yours regarding music in general?
I don't seem to read much into other people's opinions of music anymore. I've never expected everyone to have the same taste.

To each their own...

10b. What about particular songs/artists/genres?
Same as above. Sometimes I'll make fun of friends for whatever they're listening to, but it's in good fun, and (I am pretty sure) they know I'm kidding; they do it to me all the time too.

11. Do you have formal musical training? (Such as receiving singing lessons, playing an instrument, etc.)
Violin for ~10 years, though I was shitty ):
No formal music theory training.

12. Who influences your choice of music most? How do you find new music? Through which channels? Through advertising/word of mouth/YouTube/reviews/other?
Mainly friend recommendations, what.cd browsing, last.fm creeping.

13a. Have your tastes or preferences changed over time?
Ja
13b. If not, why not?
13c. If yes, in what way?
Well let's just say I'm not always listening to oldie "Stepmania tunes" anymore

14. Anything you'd like to add on this subject? Any other questions you wish I'd posed?
I don't know if anyone really matured the same way, but getting into the FFR/SM community really helped shape my sense of music. Sounds pretty nerdy right?

Before I joined, I couldn't care for music in the slightest. Music was always background noise to me, even as I was learning violin. I never really appreciated music until I starting playing FFR and SM. Looking back I don't regret googling "DDR simulator" that one day, huehue. Who knows how I would have ended up otherwise ??
So T.Hanks !! (o:

Oh and are you actually going to read all of these xd

Re: Survey: Define "good" music.

I'll answer a few of them since it's getting late:

1a. What do you consider good music, either in general or in concrete examples?
1b. How about bad music?

Any music that describes who I generally am is seen as "good" music to me. Having more of a serene personality, I like to listen to classical music. Occasionally, there is also a "wild" side of me, so in some instances, I would prefer party/dance music haha. Being a very positive person, I don't entirely judge a particular genre as "bad" music. However, there are many songs out there that don't describe me well and that's what I consider "bad" for myself.

5. Do you think you have good taste in music?

This is essentially asking me if I admire the way I view myself, and of course I do. Therefore, I believe I have a good taste of music (certainly unique to say the least). I'm sure there are some people who disagree with my music selections and that's perfectly fine since I don't expect everyone to admire what I like to listen to.

6. How objective do you think you are when you judge music?

I think the beauty of music lies in how we all interpret different types of music. When one judges music, there is a considerable amount of subjectivity associated with our reviews. For objectivity, the closest factors are pitch relevancy, tone, and all of the other mechanics of music, but even so, there is a subjective factor behind all of that. Maybe this is based on what I believe, but this supports why I think anyone can sing.

Being an open minded person, I give any type of music a chance to have it try and express who I am. Many times it fails, but in some instances you learn new things about yourself. Regardless of how objective I am, there will always be a subjective factor.

I'll finish more when I wake up since it's getting late here haha.

Re: Survey: Define "good" music.

0. What is/are your favorite genre(s)?
Ambient. Otherwise, none.

1a. What do you consider good music, either in general or in concrete examples?
Anything with memorability factor, and nostalgia factor can also be a big part.
1b. How about bad music?
Anything incredibly repetitive and long and having no memorability factor.

2. Are you biased against some genres because of the fans they tend to attract?
No.

3a. Do you make assumptions about fans of particular genres?
Sometimes, but usually I don't care.
3b. What are some of the stereotypes you are familiar with?
I don't want to get into this.
3c. What stereotypes exist about fans of your preferred genre?
About ambient listeners? No idea.

4. What role does a band/artist/genre's popularity play in your like or dislike for them/her/it?
Generally it can mean less memorability factor if it's trying to appeal to a bigger audience. But popularity doesn't change the song itself.

5. Do you think you have good taste in music?
Nobody would say I have good taste in music. Not with my abstract factor.

6. How objective do you think you are when you judge music?
Very subjective.

7. Do you judge artists/bands on their entire body of work, or on a song-by-song basis?
I don't even care about artists or bands really, just certain songs. An example is how I basically dislike Drumcorps, but Grist blows everything out of the water.

8. Do you consider your choice of music part of your identity, image or public persona?
Yes, but in a way that's not presentable.

9. Have you ever made choices in music based on what your peers might think of you? (For example, do you avoid a certain genre because your friends think it is without merit? Do you listen to genres you don't particularly like because your friends like them?, etc.)
Out of respect I'd play something they would probably like if I was around them. Playing something such as The Bird's Midair Heatstroke probably wouldn't be liked.

10a. How do you feel/react when someone states an opinion contrary to yours regarding music in general?
Unless it's directly trying to insult me or is unreasonable, I don't really care.
10b. What about particular songs/artists/genres?
Like I've said, I don't really care about artists or bands.

11. Do you have formal musical training? (Such as receiving singing lessons, playing an instrument, etc.)
No.

12. Who influences your choice of music most? How do you find new music? Through which channels? Through advertising/word of mouth/YouTube/reviews/other?
Myself, stepmania, FFR, life in general, and sometimes friends.

13a. Have your tastes or preferences changed over time?
Absolutely.
13b. If not, why not?
13c. If yes, in what way?
Memorability factor. There's usually some part of a song that really remains in my head or some type of other abstract factor.

14. Anything you'd like to add on this subject? Any other questions you wish I'd posed?
I usually dislike long songs, and songs without lyrics can also contain a lot of meaning (abstract/memorability aspects).

Re: Survey: Define "good" music.

Hmm, I enjoy threads like this.

0. What is/are your favorite genre(s)?
EDM, my favorites being Happy Hardcore, Gabber, and Hardstyle, although I enjoy all of it. Otherwise, I prefer more Indie stuff.

1a. What do you consider good music, either in general or in concrete examples?
Although I prefer underground music, mainstream music isn't necesarilly bad, its popularity can just be annoying. I basically think good music is music that shows lots of talent through its lyrics and use of instruments, whether they be physical or electronic.

1b. How about bad music?
I hate music that sounds like an immature 8 year old could have made. I realize you could say I'm one to talk for liking EDM, but there is a huge difference between a ***got like Deadmau5 and Daft Punk.

2. Are you biased against some genres because of the fans they tend to attract?
Oh yeah. Dubstep being a great example. I've listened to Dubstep since around 2007, and I thought it was cool. I don't dislike Dubstep now, but there are so many retards who keep screaming that Dubstep is the coolest thing ever, when really its just a fad that a bunch of people like because its "the cool thing."

3a. Do you make assumptions about fans of particular genres?
Not exactly. I judge a person based on what they say and wear, not just what they listen to alone.

3b. What are some of the stereotypes you are familiar with?
Screamo being for Scene/Emo kids, Dubstep being for hardcore ravers(lol), etc.

3c. What stereotypes exist about fans of your preferred genre?
We all do drugs, we only listen to dubstep and electro, dumb shit like that.

4. What role does a band/artist/genre's popularity play in your like or dislike for them/hir/it?
Um...I guess its how the artist handles being popular. Daft Punk has become massively popular, but they are still true to themselves and don't sell out, and yet still make fantastic hit music. Deadmau5 makes shit music and is just a fad who thrives on marketing himself, not making good music.

5. Do you think you have good taste in music?
I'd say so.

6. How objective do you think you are when you judge music?
Extremely.

7. Do you judge artists/bands on their entire body of work, or on a song-by-song basis?
Hm...a little bit of both I guess.

8. Do you consider your choice of music part of your identity, image or public persona?
I try not to, but my hobbies and fashion do kind of go hand in hand with the music I listen to.

9. Have you ever made choices in music based on what your peers might think of you? (For example, do you avoid a certain genre because your friends think it is without merit? Do you listen to genres you don't particularly like because your friends like them?, etc.)
No, and I can't ****ing stand when people do this.

10a. How do you feel/react when someone states an opinion contrary to yours regarding music in general?
Unless they insult my music for a stupid reason, I generally don't care.

10b. What about particular songs/artists/genres?
See 10a

Yeah, I'm in college getting a degree in music education, currently taking voice and piano lessons.

12. Who influences your choice of music most? How do you find new music? Through which channels? Through advertising/word of mouth/YouTube/reviews/other?
Me, internet.

13a. Have your tastes or preferences changed over time?
Ehhhhhh....sorta.

13b. If not, why not?
I've listened to EDM since grade school, buying my first cd in 5th grade, which was a 2 disc trance club mix.

13c. If yes, in what way?
I never really stopped listening to EDM, but I went through a phase in high school where I listened to screamo/death metal all the time. Not really anymore though.

Re: Survey: Define "good" music.

0. What is/are your favorite genre(s)?
My favorite genres are punk (powerviolence, screamo,) rap (backpack, early-mid 90s,) and electronic (drum n bass, ambient)

1a. What do you consider good music, either in general or in concrete examples?
Good music is made when you put only YOURSELF into your music.
1b. How about bad music?
The reverse of good music, bad music is made when you put only your RECORD LABEL or FANBASE in your music.
2. Are you biased against some genres because of the fans they tend to attract?
No, I will give anything a chance.

3a. Do you make assumptions about fans of particular genres?
Yes.
3b. What are some of the stereotypes you are familiar with?
When people hear me say screamo they think I'm talking about Underoath and Asking Alexandria. Fans of dubstep are 500% more likely to be rolltarded.
3c. What stereotypes exist about fans of your preferred genre?
We're all elitists. It's true.

4. What role does a band/artist/genre's popularity play in your like or dislike for them/hir/it?
Not a whole lot. Popular bands just tend to be shitty, that's the way it is.

5. Do you think you have good taste in music?
I don't think tastes in music are good or bad, I think they can be more or less eclectic. I'd say my taste in music is very eclectic.

6. How objective do you think you are when you judge music?
If it gets my body moving, that's a good indicator that I like what I'm hearing.

7. Do you judge artists/bands on their entire body of work, or on a song-by-song basis?
Song-by-song, but I usually tend to download complete discographies at a time. I prefer to listen to complete albums.

8. Do you consider your choice of music part of your identity, image or public persona?
Identity, very much so. Image, certainly not. Public persona, also very much so.

9. Have you ever made choices in music based on what your peers might think of you? (For example, do you avoid a certain genre because your friends think it is without merit? Do you listen to genres you don't particularly like because your friends like them?, etc.)
I have never. my friends have always listened and played shitty music and i let them know how I feel about it. they usually like the songs that i show them, but they are extremely ignorant when it comes to finding new music to listen to on their own and are stuck listening to the same old bullshit...

10a. How do you feel/react when someone states an opinion contrary to yours regarding music in general?
With a grain of salt. Most people's taste in music is narrow and I don't expect them to like what I like.
10b. What about particular songs/artists/genres?
"lol **** off dude this shit is badass how can you not like this?"

11. Do you have formal musical training? (Such as receiving singing lessons, playing an instrument, etc.)
No

12. Who influences your choice of music most? How do you find new music? Through which channels? Through advertising/word of mouth/YouTube/reviews/other?
last.fm has played a big role in my taste's development. since then I have been finding more artists through live performances. I've networked with people in bands all across the USA and get to see what bands they're playing with at shows. this is my favorite way of finding new music because there are some very talented local musicians you will never hear about because they never go on tour.

13a. Have your tastes or preferences changed over time?
ever changing
13c. If yes, in what way?
i started listening to classical music as a child, age 8 was classic rock, 4th/5th grade was radio rock (TOOL, Disturbed, SOAD, Metallica, etc.) middle school was when I was introduced to MF Doom and the other various rap genres as well as drum n bass, and in high school i began listening to ALL GENRES of punk and ambient.

Re: Survey: Define "good" music.

Cool

0. What is/are your favorite genre(s)?
Post-Hardcore and every form of Electronic music.

1a. What do you consider good music, either in general or in concrete examples?
Music with a good beat or melody, and catchy vocals. lol 1a
1b. How about bad music?
I don't know why I don't like rap. I'm pretty sure it's because 80% of it has some of the stupidest fucking lyrics I've ever heard in my life. As for the other 20%, I like the lyrics and what they stand for, but I still can't listen to it. Country I dislike because I hate every Country singers voice. Pop is just bad in general, it doesn't need an explanation.

2. Are you biased against some genres because of the fans they tend to attract?
Not really. All I have to do is not act like them and I'm good.

3a. Do you make assumptions about fans of particular genres?
I don't make assumptions, unless trying to generalize the types of people who listen to that type of music counts as assuming.
3b. What are some of the stereotypes you are familiar with?
I can't think of any right now because it's 2:30 in the morning.
3c. What stereotypes exist about fans of your preferred genre?
Electronic I have no idea. Post-Hardcore (screamo pretty much): Every person that listens to it is either emo or something similar.

4. What role does a band/artist/genre's popularity play in your like or dislike for them/hir/it?
Absolutely none whatsoever. I don't care if the entire continent knows the song by heart.

5. Do you think you have good taste in music?
Not really considering that a very small portion of the places I've lived listen to the same music I do.

6. How objective do you think you are when you judge music?
Extremely.

7. Do you judge artists/bands on their entire body of work, or on a song-by-song basis?
The second one.

8. Do you consider your choice of music part of your identity, image or public persona?
Kind of. All I wear is band t-shirts from Hot Topic so I guess.

9. Have you ever made choices in music based on what your peers might think of you? (For example, do you avoid a certain genre because your friends think it is without merit? Do you listen to genres you don't particularly like because your friends like them?, etc.)
Nope.

10a. How do you feel/react when someone states an opinion contrary to yours regarding music in general?
I can't argue with them because not everyone has the same taste in music.

10b. What about particular songs/artists/genres?
See 10a.

11. Do you have formal musical training? (Such as receiving singing lessons, playing an instrument, etc.)
Nope.

12. Who influences your choice of music most? How do you find new music? Through which channels? Through advertising/word of mouth/YouTube/reviews/other?
Last.fm and Youtube

13a. Have your tastes or preferences changed over time?
Nope.
13b. If not, why not?
Because I tried listening to every genre, and I don't like a large majority of music.
13c. If yes, in what way?
...

14. Anything you'd like to add on this subject? Any other questions you wish I'd posed?
FUCK YEAH KORS K.

Re: Survey: Define "good" music.

0. What is/are your favorite genre(s)?
Any song that is executed in a way that it makes music sound like an artform, not just a cash cow.

1a. What do you consider good music, either in general or in concrete examples?
Answered in 0.
1b. How about bad music?
Opposite of 0.

2. Are you biased against some genres because of the fans they tend to attract?
I may be biased against metal.

3a. Do you make assumptions about fans of particular genres?
Yes
3b. What are some of the stereotypes you are familiar with?
Metalheads listen to metal because it's loud.
3c. What stereotypes exist about fans of your preferred genre?
Cocky, highbrow, pathetic, wimpy, do-gooder, don't honestly like the genre. Opera.

4. What role does a band/artist/genre's popularity play in your like or dislike for them/hir/it?
Don't care, as long as the music stays inspirational, not more of the same because it pays well.

5. Do you think you have good taste in music?
...Yes.

6. How objective do you think you are when you judge music?
For the most part quite objective as I judge the artform, not the sound.

7. Do you judge artists/bands on their entire body of work, or on a song-by-song basis?
Song-by-song basis.

8. Do you consider your choice of music part of your identity, image or public persona?
No, I don't choose any music over another, I accept all music.

9. Have you ever made choices in music based on what your peers might think of you? (For example, do you avoid a certain genre because your friends think it is without merit? Do you listen to genres you don't particularly like because your friends like them?, etc.)
No. My fellow students first looked at me awkwardly. Then they respected me for being awkward.

10a. How do you feel/react when someone states an opinion contrary to yours regarding music in general?
Everyone has opinions; everyone has the right to express them; no one is the same. I will listen to your reasoning and consider its validity afterwards.
10b. What about particular songs/artists/genres?
Same deal.

11. Do you have formal musical training? (Such as receiving singing lessons, playing an instrument, etc.)
Autodidactic pianist.

12. Who influences your choice of music most? How do you find new music? Through which channels? Through advertising/word of mouth/YouTube/reviews/other?
Again, there's no matter of choice of music. I browse Youtube for new music. I look up a work I know and look in the related videos.

13a. Have your tastes or preferences changed over time?
Yes
13b. If not, why not?
13c. If yes, in what way?
Well I was a teenager, so I liked loud metal and rock about death and misery. Now I don't.

14. Anything you'd like to add on this subject? Any other questions you wish I'd posed?
MUSIC = CLASS. MUSIC =/= STYLE.
