Abusive Mods.

I didnt relise there are still highly abusive moderators and admins on this site. I thought that all ended with the crash of FFR. Guess not :(

Mods need to check themselves before they wreck themselves.

Banned for.... down voting their profile and for speaking in spanish.

Seems like a racist predicament no?

Truely, wrong. This is basically stating this is a closed community, that people are not ubiquitous in a sense that they have the freedom of speech. Close off the global community to a small share of Americans, bravo.

I don't see a problem with people talking in Spanish with other people who can :/

I do it all the time in my tourney threads with my co-host.

I personally don't care, the rules are fairly outdated.

Did you talk to random people in Spanish? Or to people you know can converse in Spanish as well? I think it really depends on how it's being used.

I don't think the rule is intended to be racially exclusive. Sounds like the rule was made more out of a generalization for convenience's sake. Even so, the rule is largely ineffective and I think people naturally know what languages they should/can converse in. No need to make a rule out of it. It's like making a rule telling people to walk, not sit - people generally know how to handle basic linguistics.

Re: Abusive Mods.

It's actually quite common in other forums as well -- the rule of a primary language being spoken is enforced only so that the community commonly understands users of the same language.

I have seen instances where people do get a little bit upset about other languages, but if it involves two people who seem to be conversing with nobody else, then it really shouldn't be a problem.

EDIT: whoa, were you banned for talking on someone else's profile in Spanish? If the person was conversing back to you, then that's a bit ridiculous.

Re: Abusive Mods.

Maybe it should be restructured if it is truely fairly outdated.

Create chat rooms if you want to speak in a different language?

As for "getting users confused." Atleast they are in a sense learning a new language. Not to completely out of the blue speak a different language but learning small words in foreign languages at a time will make for a more well rounded and culturally diverse FFRian

Outdated or not, those are the rules on the books, and it is the sacred duty of the mods to enforce them, whatever they may be. Since rules tend to leave a fair amount of room for interpretation, mods are also the ones that are granted the ability to interpret the rules so that they apply to a situation that might come up. Add to all this the fact that they have to do this without pay or (public) complaining in addition to being the mountain of integrity they were before becoming mods, then add the pressures of a normal AFK life, and you can see how they might crack under pressure every so often.

I know all this because I've been there.

Re: Abusive Mods.

The only time I've seen legitimacy in this rule is when someone randomly starts speaking a different language in the forum, assuming that everyone knows how to speak his/her language. Most of the time, said person just wants to keep his/her speech relatively incognito amongst most people, and often do it just to screw around with others. That rarely happens anyways.

edit: I encourage mods to not only enforce the rules but to understand them, since I've seen several rules in different sites placed for the strangest and most irrelevant reasons. Mods might refute this argument, saying that run-of-the-mill users like me don't understand the implications of such rules, but I nevertheless suspect that there's still a decent amount of lazy authoritarians hanging around without thinking if said rules actually make sense. Sometimes they really don't. Questioning rules that really doesn't seem right is far better than to keep quiet from letting something insensible happen. I think that's morally more just than being afraid that you're breaching the policies.

If 2 people are talking back and forth in a different language, it's completely fine with me. It's where it's happening that's more strict. Talking on profile comments is completely okay.

Though, we do prefer that if you speak English, that you do.

Yeah, I am a mod for a little game known as Runescape and several other forums. I just find it wrong that if i am talking to someone else who understands the language, nothing should be wrong about that. There should be NO shame in attempting to become more culturally diverse. To many people are living a life as if English is purely ubiquitos being the only langua franca as if we are all living in an isotropic plane.

If enough support is shown, why not open a foreign language section in the forum?
I was actually genuinely surprised that a rhythm game website didn't have an Asian forum when I first joined.

That would mean having moderators of the given languages of course.

I'd want this. It's a way to learn another language, I think... or get help learning one at least.

Now that you mention it, I've seen MMORPGs with foreign language boards but FFR and Keybeat don't have any haha

Yes this is what im talking about. Create a new forum section for different language and possibly in profile chat to.

Yeah MMORPGs are definitally big on being a global community.

Besides global community = better for you better for me.

Re: Abusive Mods.

I really don't even think there's a need to segregate languages by making exclusive forums for them. It's not a matter of partitioning differences like men and women bathrooms. Just integrate language into the community as a whole.

Guaranteed there's less than 1% chance you'll see a thread where someone messes around with you in a different language just for the heck of it. There's overall little confusion - in fact, I think "confusion" is more of a poor excuse to legitimize the rule.

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

You have NO idea.

Thatskier 03-17-2011 11:42 PM

Re: Abusive Mods.

Its not segregation. In fact in is a centripetal force. If people can go into different language board forums, they will attempt to interact more and become more diversified in there language. Also by doing this people who speak different languages will respect the community as a whole even more. It is not confusion either, you should really look into the ruling in which velocity posted. It is cleary not defined well enough for a large community.
