Stepmania Tournament

CHECK THE BOTTOM OF PAGE 10 FOR ROUND 5 INFO

I figured it's been a decent amount of time since a large scale tournament has been held, so I decided I'd host one myself. So here it is, the Stepmania Keyboard Tournament 2007 (SMKT07), hosted at FFR/ODI.

Tournament Structure: The tournament will consist of eleven rounds, each lasting one week. For the first nine rounds, (x-10)/9 will be eliminated (adjusting for any disqualifications), where 'x' equals the initial amount of players. On round 10, seven people will get eliminated, leaving the final three. Each of them will choose one song (that hasn't already been played) from the whole tournament selection that they'll compete upon. Highest combined score of those three wins.

Part of the advantage of having a controlled amount of eliminations is it allows the tournament to have a much larger amount of participation than single elimination, as well as guarantees that the tournament will go on for a pre-determined amount of time. This way, I'd imagine more people are being accommodated. I think it works in the favor of both the casual and hardcore SM player, so to speak.

Each round three songs will be played, choosen at random of course. The dp of the three scores will be added up to give you your final score for the round. Every two rounds we will move up one 'set' in the song selection (see below).

DP: All scores will be calculated into 'dance points' as such: +7 ra/ma, +5 pa/ok, +3 great, -4 good/boo, -5 miss. Failing a song has no effect on your score; therefore, fail off should be turned on, so if in the event you can't pass a song, you can still get full credit for the song.

Tournament Rules: Judge 4 / default ini (should go without saying). Both mines and hands must be on. Only mods that adjust your view of the arrows are acceptable; any mods that adjust the actual contents of the stepfile are not allowed. Ex: x/cmods are allowed. Reverse is allowed. Mirror is not allowed.
EDIT: K, a couple points regarding mirror were brought up. Mirror is now allowed, but only if you use it for every score you submit. You can go one way or another, but not both.

You must turn in your scores within the alotted time. If you send in multiple scores, then I'll choose the first one you sent. Only send in recent scores; not some awesome sdp you got 6 months ago because you're too lazy to play the stepfile now.

Of course, I'm not the bs police. If you cheat, I may not catch you. In all honesty though, you're not gaining much. At best people will read your name when you lose and think 'oh hey I didn't realize he was that good w/e', and then you'll fall back into the anonymity that is the internet. Needless to say, if you do get caught cheating (or break any of the above rules), you'll be disqualified from the tournament.

If you're unsure about ANY rules, just ask. "I didn't know that" is NOT an excuse. You should've read this post carefully, and if anything was unclear, you should've asked.

Song Choice: I've compiled a list of 100 songs for the tournament, placed into five 'sets', based on difficulty. As I said above, each two rounds we move up to the next set of songs. I structured things like this to give the tournament a more climatic flow, as well as be more 'noob' friendly; no getting hit with Earthquake on the third round, lol.

I tried my best to get a spread of files that represent multiple stepping styles, song genres, stepfile artists, rhythmic structure, and many other factors. The main underlying factor though was, "Will the community like this file?". For the most part, I'd like to hope I did a good job. As far as difficulty goes, I took many things into consideration including speed, pattern complexity, and jack content. I tried to also pick some stepfiles for the easier sets that are easy to beat, but difficult to ma (Syntax Egon for example). This way, the first half of the tournament won't be completely boring for the best players. Granted, I'm sure there's some debatable overlap in terms of difficulty placement. But I digress.

Ps. If I didn't have a stepfile by you in the selection, it's not because I hate you or think you stepfiles suck or am just plain retarded or whatever. If you know some of yours deserved to be in here, then it was probably simply an oversight. In other words, don't bitch about it.

EDIT: The ones that were "lost in the upload" somehow got missed or something and didn't make it into the actual pack. I can host them upon request.

If you're feeling lazy and/or have most of those songs and don't want to download everything, don't worry. I'll individually host the stepfiles as they're choosen to be played.

Anybody can join this tournament. I don't care if you bs'd in the past, or if you aren't too skilled, or w/e. Anybody can join, and I encourage you to do so. The bigger the turnout, the better.

If you'd like to join, DON'T SEND ME A PM. Instead, send an e-mail to stepmaniakt@gmail.com with your forum name, as well as where you heard about the tournament. The tournament will start on October 15th, so register before then.
EDIT: Making exceptions. If you still wanna join, you have until the end of Round 1 (Oct. 19th) :D

Thanks go to GLoVE for all his advice in making this tournament happen, as well as hosting the song pack, to Necros for his critique of the song choices, and to Dew for the awesome banner.

Ahh. I saw the tournament sticky here at BB and simply assumed. I didn't look over the new forum layout and didn't realize they added a subforum for tournies (nice addition btw). When a moderator sees this, if you could move it there, I'd appreciate it.

EDIT: Browsed that section, it looks like it's meant for FFR related tournaments. I'm guessing most of the SM peeps browse BB more than that area... so Idk. The mods can decide where this thing belongs.

Well, FFR tournies are of course more common on the FFR forums.. It should still go in the Tournaments subforum. And yes, they probably do browse BB more, but you still have to put it in the right category. I would join if mines weren't on, cause I'm too lazy to relearn how to play with mines on. Nevertheless, I'm dl'ing the pack cause it looks like it has pretty good files.

Don't let that discourage you. You'll find the majority of the songs don't contain any mines, and the ones that do only have a few. It's the same with bpm tricks- I tried to keep both very light. That's why I didn't add for example Tranzport, because it had too many mines and the bpm tricks in it were too extreme. It's an amazing stepfile, but I'd feel like I was cheating the stepfile if I didn't have people play it like that, but at the same time, it wouldn't be fair of me to ask (especially in a tournament setting) for people to play a file under those conditions.

In other words, join anyways 8)

Practically none of them have mines anyway.

Alright cool.

And yeah, I've been adding people if they say something like 'im in' in the topic. I only say e-mail because that's how all the scores are gonna be handled once this thing starts, so I'm trying to get people used to that, hehe.

EDIT: Also, made a change to one of the tournament rules, regarding mirror.
