Freedom of Speech in Chit Chat

You can view the thread in discussion here.

First, I want to emphasize that the thread I started was perfectly legitimate. I wished to have a thread where people could post Bible passages and others could discuss their meanings/interpretations/etc. I understand that the majority of posters here are atheist, but I thought that instead of people posting flippant comments such as these:

maybe people could (assuming they are of the dissenting opinion) disagree with the morality implied by the passages. For example, in response to Deuteronomy 22:5, someone could post:

I see no reason for the Bible to be outright ignored in this community, and even if you find a discussion of the Sky-Man to be too idiotic for you, you could simply not contribute.

I would also like to respond to this comment brought up in the thread:

I hope I have adequately dispelled the notion that this thread was started for the sake of trolling. Also, if this thread was not a Chit Chat thread, where else should it go?

If I have offended anyone, I apologize. I just wanted to have a legitimate discussion about the Bible, and I thought the best way to do so would be to specifically discuss the passages contained within it. Also, if the mods could reconsider preemptive locking of the thread, I would appreciate it.

FFR as a whole is not the place for it. Perhaps even the internet.

Try going to your local church.

After seeing this thread, I knew someone was going to create a freedom of speech thread.

This is not the place to bring in religion, let alone wanting freedom of speech.

I made a proactive rather than reactive lock given the direction I believe the thread was inevitably heading and this community’s response to most religious threads. In addition, the vast majority of posters were completely disregarding the point of the thread (and to be honest I thought the OP looked somewhat troll but didn’t lock based on that alone). Others might disagree with the lock, but I still believe it was for the best unfortunately.

Why? I don't mean to be rude, I just think this sentiment deserves some elaboration.

That thread should be treated the same way as any other thread, unfortunately people like to be asshats and troll. With that being said, it was locked because of certain shitty members in the community that can't stay out of things or keep non-related opinions to themselves.

As for unlocking the thread, I highly doubt they'll do that because the trolling will just continue and eventually turn in to a religious debate.

but why not just ignore the thread if people want to have a discussion about it

I stand with OWA's decision to lock the thread. I believe in freedom of speech, but with the kind of users this website has now, you'll be lucky to get a serious response.

Would this topic do better in CT?

I am actually curious if FFR is capable of being mostly polite on both ends

I'd say it would be best in literature. Not underselling the religious attention... but it is simply the most related section. Unfortunately I think there is too much immediate hostility when it comes to this sort of thing/the need to refute the logical origins of it all. The thread was about bible passages, not about christianity/religiousness in general per se.

I thought of that, but I figured that threads that go down in CT just get locked, whereas ones in Chit Chat can get moved to CT if people thought it would be appropriate.

This wouldn't be a problem if members that have nothing to contribute to a thread just stayed out of it altogether.

But I don't see that happening anytime soon.

Zag said it best once before.

"FFR is not a democracy."

And technically you don't have freedom of speech here because you agreed to abide by the forums rules. If they see it as bad, then it's bad. Simple as that (within reason obviously.)

i like how you complain about freedom of speech with your thread being locked in the same breath that you complain about the content of the replies
