Re: graphics help
usually you want to start by picking a typeface that 1) is not comic sans and 2) fits the look and purpose of what you're making.
then you'll pick the size and color, use nice round colors, not just random colors that you mouse over and click. after that, type out what you wanna say, and kern the letters/words accordingly, so that it looks real nice and lastly, just mess around with text effects. i'm not familiar with GIMP but it must have some "outer glow", "drop shadow", and "gradient overlay" settings or something. just mess around, see at what works and what doesn't, look at examples, and practice |
Re: graphics help
did it ever occur to anyone to keep text flat, free of effects

Re: graphics help
It depends on what the graphics are that you're putting it over, and the mood you want to convey. If you make it too graphical in itself, then it won't be very readable. You also need it to punch out from the background; in some cases, the more generic techniques like strokes are a very easy way to make the fill portion of the text punch out, but a hard shadow, or just simple good looking text can stand out on it's own.
Got an example of the graphic you want the text over? |
