I've had fun talking in the new years and the skill booster tourneys, but there's so many more players in the official and so much more to sift through to find D1-3 talk if there's only one topic

And I really appreciate all the work you put into placements <3

You guys are welcome to make a thread if you'd like. I don't really make a bunch of "official" threads for the tournament because I like being able to find the information in one place. But if you guys want a place to chat go right ahead :)

How's the tourney going for us lower-division players?

It took me 42 attempts to get the AAA in D2. Harder than expected...

Oof, sorry to hear that Garquillex! I got it on my 2nd playthrough after getting 4-0-0-1 the first time. I like Silvuh files in general though. Excited to see what we have next round.

Yeah, I had some trouble with that song too. Didn't really like the music and the grace notes always give me goods. I think I had 30 something plays.

Re: 8th Official FFR Tournament - Divisions 1, 2, & 3 Discussion Thread

This is a great idea :) Tourney is going good so far, I did not expect to AAA division 3's song at all mainly because my highest AAA before that was a 35. I got goodflags? on a few higher 40's but I mainly thought it was just luck :/ It took me about 3 full attempts and a few restarts to get it. I haven't tried D2's song yet but I heard it was kind of an iffy one.

I got a Blackflag on my first run of the D3 song and took me like 75 more attempts to get the AAA... Dunno why I mindblocked so hard :\

Song/chart was good though ^^

Lol I kept splitting the jumps on the D3 song so I was stuck with 2g for a while. AAA'd it eventually, but I had to switch the noteskin XD

Just played through d2's, yeah that's a little confusing of a song. The grace notes I think before or after the jumps somewhere in the middle made me get a good.

I play with Velocity, but I switched to Orbular and I somehow got the AAA ahaha. I'm guessing it's because it doesnt look how I'm used to seeing it, so I was more alert when the notes came.

Ah. I switched from Velo to Delta a while back

I never had a problem with the grace notes in D2. It was just patterns in the last third of the song. They were new to me, or just awkward

D2's song is evil >_> About 20+ retries and can't get past 1 good lol Though I never was good at AAA'ing piano/classical :/

D3 reporting in
Wasn't really a very hard first round song but my lack of AAA ability took me about 20 tries to finally perfect it.

That's what I thought at 1-0-0-1, but then I saw 19 other people get a AAA in the first 16 or so hours of the song being up. I figured I should probably secure my spot even though a 1-0-0-1 would almost definitely hold.

D3 will get really interesting when the songs get into the mid to upper 50's. There will be larger gaps and people will get a good idea on what particular people arn't so good at.

I know this is gonna come back and bite me in the ass but I kinda can't wait for songs that will take me longer than an hour to AAA

Hey, cool idea. I won't get to playing my song for a little while, we'll see how I do. Still not sure I belong in D3. I also don't get anything out of playing a song a bunch of times, which is inconvenient.

I'm honored to be placed so highly, but man this song is a dumb block. I can't seem to get any higher than 3.0.0.1, and usually I get between 13-26 goods.

Use Orbular as well. hhgngnng

Look, I'm a let you all finish but D3 IS THE BEST DIVISION OF ALL TIME.

But really though. I thought Fire was hard. The patterns were tough for me. The songs I find difficult are typically the opposite of the songs people at or around my skill level find difficult.

I can completely understand that. I think it took me more tries to AAA the D2 song than the D3. Piano songs tend to have grace notes that I don't hear in the music which throws me off a bit (though I don't tend to use earphones). I like the look of colorful files though. Colors of the Wind was really nice.

That's part of these competitions. I had to play a song nearly 1000 times in the 5th official in order to move on.

I'll be doing the same this year if I want any chance in moving on past first round.

There's a lot of ways to kill blocks. Ask someone such as Halogen for a replay to frame comparison to study what the chart looks like.

Put some effort into it.

Also, realistically you get something out of playing it numerous times. You get GTS and credits. Who knows maybe you'll randomly have an epiphany and AAA it.

TLDR: You sound like you expect to be able to cake walk through and are annoyed that's not how it works. This is how the Official works, EVERY division should have to put in a lot of plays. If you didn't you were placed to low.

/ end rant

Sorry for intruding on your guy's thread. It's nice to see the D1-D3 people being active though. Good luck to all of you.

Bobogoobo 01-23-2013 10:02 PM

Re: 8th Official FFR Tournament - Divisions 1, 2, & 3 Discussion Thread

I'm not annoyed, I'm just saying I don't think that's how I work. I've tried before, and very rarely can I even get a better score by playing a song over and over. I just have to get warmed up and give it my best, and that's that. Apparently that's weird, but it's just what happens, I think.

In other news, I'll just keep a "tourney log" thing by posting.
D1: easy AAA, luckily I stayed focused. D2: first try blackflag, will need to mirror so the rolls are easier, and I got a good on the orange note so being on the left will be easier. (Edit: done first try, hooray.) D3: 4-0-0-2 sightread, can improve that. A AAA _might_ be possible, my hand is kinda cold right now... Edit: might as well include D4 for fun, first try 12-1-1-7. I have to mash the double 1234 rolls, that's all that kept me from FC, though the minijacks are dangerous for me too.
Edit: Fire improved to 3 clean, now that I was expecting the first couple oranges. I like these patterns, they're surprisingly hittable.

Re: 8th Official FFR Tournament - Divisions 1, 2, & 3 Discussion Thread

I have difficulty doing well on a song I play over and over as well. What I usually try to do is play files in higher difficulty ranges then drop back down to that file. Sometimes it helps, sometimes not. Worth a shot though right?

Bobogoobo 01-23-2013 10:50 PM

Re: 8th Official FFR Tournament - Divisions 1, 2, & 3 Discussion Thread

Yeah, that's what I try to do, but even then there's usually not much change over the course of the day. That said, third try on Fire got it to a blackflag ^.^ And I still have the rest of the week to work on it. I just need to make sure I practice at least a little every day so I don't get worse.

Yeah I do that too. I usually go to Blue Noah and Blue Army as a warm up after warming up on some 50s. Blue Army is just super invigorating for me to listen and play to.

I used to play Blue Army like crazy when I was a D2 player haha. Now I get too frustrated because I know I can AAA but always screw up somewhere due to the length of it.

Just played Blue Army, invigorating indeed. It was fun, good practice for streaming (I AAAd all the jumps as always :P). I got close to your score except I got a miss between two big combos. I'll see if I can catch up sometime :P thanks for the suggestion.

Sweet Angel 01-23-2013 11:14 PM

Re: 8th Official FFR Tournament - Divisions 1, 2, & 3 Discussion Thread

Yeah same here, I was playing songs mainly in there 40's-50's but not so much anything higher. When it comes to level 60+ songs I do really bad most of the time, so I try to avoid them as much as possible. Tarrik has me playing them now though and its frustrating as hell, I actually got angry and swore at the game for the first time lol But I am noticing little improvements already so that's always a good thing .-. The worst is playing high level songs and having them as your weaknesses (for me jump stream/jacks/trills) But practice makes perfect so I'll put up with it :|

Re: 8th Official FFR Tournament - Divisions 1, 2, & 3 Discussion Thread

Yeah, I tried Fire several times today, mirror and non-mirror, consecutively and with breaks, and it just kept getting worse. Getting a BF again on the first or second try of the day was fairly easy, and I can AAA it if I get enough chances to play.

I mainly mean the off-sync feel I get, yeah, but playing 30 or so games with totally random goods at any time made me sort of hate the entire file. :P

AJ checked the sync on all the files, there shouldn't be anything wrong with it. Plus Silvuh himself is like a sync master.

Edit: Just gave it a play and it plays fine on my end, but this is why we have offsets now. Seems sync can be different for people.

I know, I talked with a few others also, and they are not having a problem And I have no doubt of his sync abilities, on account of how superior they are to mine haha.

I think I might just blame all my problems on the fact that I have a mac. I don't really know anymore :|

I'm on win7, good rig, standalone... I have the same issue with like 2-3 other files only (remember specifically boss machine). Every other file in the game I tried are synced fine apart from the obvious old ones. This one I have to do -2 offset to play. But yeah, was just frustrating until I started using auto fail and noticed how random the goods were, good thing the offset option is available :)

I switched to classic theme on Windows 7 and it actually helped a lot. I also have a new computer and use standalone, so I know it's just not my computer being junk.

If you use a Windows Aero theme, you have a display lag of 1 frame, which is approximately 16.67milliseconds, because it used a function called Vertical Sync

Looks like a 48-49 from the preview, although there's no way to really tell :)

Try downloading and using the camino browser, seems to be the only mac browser that gives me 0 problems with excellent gameplay. (except the occasional lag spike.)

Bro, the cut off for D3 is stupid. I honestly feel that I'd never be able to compete in there. I'm round 1 eliminated. No way I can beat what I've got. :/ Not with this computer, and my friend's outta town, so I have no other chance.

Cut off is 5 goods I feel like I should have been put in D2. :/

That's the kind of attitude that'll keep you yellow.
Just forget you're even in this and play like it's a casual session and you're only here to enjoy yourself. Having no expectations often yields a higher result.

Yesterday I played that song 50 consecutive times and I still couldn't beat a 10-0-0-0.
I yelled and quit, accepted that I probably wasn't gonna see round two.
Decided to go for it one last time a few hours ago, and AAA'd my first try.
It's all about your outlook on the situation.

If this still isn't helping, have you tried mirror'd yet?

Edit: You say the issue lies with your computer? Perhaps the Standalone is a better bet if you aren't already using.

Someone has to be eliminated round 1 :(
We can't all be seeded high

5 goods is a pretty crazy cutoff. I sort of agree with you.
