What is this attitude!?
You ALWAYS need more money!

Plus hello 24 slot bags next patch, 3k apiece 11 bags = 33k gold, there's your good reason to get more money :P

(at the very least get orbs and give em to guildies, alts... the emblems aint doin you any good just sitting there in your currencies pane. Hell, give some to some random newly dinged 80, make his week with a new pair of bracers or something)

Tonight is a raid night for us and lately I've been fooling around with Xfire, a live streaming site for games like WoW and my GM wants me to stream our raid tonight for his own personal amusement. Since it's going to be done anyways, I thought I would show it off here for anyone that might want to pop in and see how we do things on Whisperwind.

http://www.xfire.com/live_video/slylos/

Our raid isn't until 8pm EST but I'll be streaming throughout most of the day anyways while doing BGs and other random 10 mans. I'll post a reminder before the raid actually starts for anyone that wants to watch.

*Warning* This stream will probably contain conversations from our Vent since I have it set up that way and our GM cusses A LOT, and calls people idiots and worse...A LOT. Fair warning.

Anyone else find the arena rating totally messed up? My team is at 1018 rating and we win the majority of our games, but the ones we lose we lose like 8-12 rating and we only win like 6-9 rating.

What are your comparative matchmaking levels? How many games have you played? Are you just starting and are getting your ranking up consistantly? If you're winning a lot the game goes "YOu're new, but winning, you must be well-geared/skilled but a recently created team" and your ranking increases are lower.

Well that's kinda silly, if you are say 2 people from a top ranked 5s team stepping down to do some 2s for giggles and are geared/skilled, why do they slow your ranking increase? shouldn't they speed it up until you start losing a bit, in order to facilitate getting you to where you should be? No point in a geared/skilled team being forced to stay low ranking, crushing nubs hundreds of times to get rating... unless that's your thing :/

Yea that makes no sense. But is the whole point of losing alot more rating than you gain? To drain out the good teams from the better teams? Still it probably only leaves the totally dominate team combos left.

Re: World of Warcraft

The point is that if you beat a team that is better than you, you get a LOT of ranking, and if you beat a team that is a lot worse than you, you get only a small increase to ranking.

So when you are brand new and it is still figuring out your appropriate matchmaking level, if you're losing a lot, you tend to lose very little if any ranking, and if you are winning a lot, you tend to win not as much ranking.

I mean new teams that are running more like 50/50 or 40/60 are getting 45 ranking per win, and a team that is beating the pants of people might get only 10 or 12 BUT their matchmaking value is still increasing, so they get places against better and better teams as they keep winning, so they aren't in fact only crushing crappy teams, they just aren't getting LARGE ranking increases until they start beating teams that are better than them.

Let me rephrase it: Matchmaking value is a measure of how "good" the team is. Ranking gain/loss is a measure of how much better/worse the winning team was compared to the losing team. If you start fresh in a bracket, the game does not know how good you are, so it places you against teams of wildly different skill levels. If you perform very well and win the majority of games, your ranking gain is slowed, because you're clearly very good and still playing very poor teams, so it's unfair for you to get a ton of ranking that easily, but your matchmaking value DOES increase, thus making you play harder teams. The goal is to get you placed according to your actual skill as quickly as possible, while giving you the least amount of "free" rating against really bad teams while they move you up.

Re: World of Warcraft

Arena uses the ELO Rating System

Quote:

Example of a match rating calculation:

Team A's Current Score: 1500pt
Team B's Current Score: 1580pt

Team A's Chance of Winning: 1 / (1+10(1580 - 1500)/400) = 0.38686
Team B's Chance of Winning: 1 / (1+10(1500 - 1580)/400) = 0.61314

Now Let's say Team A won the battle then
Team A's New Score: 1500 + 32*(1 - 0.38686) = 1500 + 19.62 = 1519.62
Team B's New Score: 1580 + 32*(0 - 0.61314) = 1580 + (-19.62) = 1560.38

Now Let's say Team B won the battle then
Team A's New Score: 1500 + 32*(0 - 0.38686) = 1500 + (-12.38) = 1487.62
Team B's New Score: 1580 + 32*(1 - 0.61314) = 1580 + 12.38 = 1592.38

The K value used by Blizzard is 32. So each match, the maximum rating gain/loss will be 32pts. And if you play with a team with same rating, you will gain/lose exactly 16pts.

As you can see when a team with a higher ranking score wins a match against a lower ranking team, they receive fewer points than if the lower rank team won.

Except that the actual maximum rating gain/loss is 47

Re: World of Warcraft

That's the old BC max points, but the rating system is still essentially the same, but slightly modified since you start out at 0 instead of 1500. Plus you have not only a personal arena rating but a hidden secondary rating that pairs you with players of your same skill level.

The amount of rank you move up has nothing to do whether you win frequently or not beyond winning in general.

Re: World of Warcraft

Um...no, once your matchmaking score and ranking settle out as "established" you're correct that winning/losing frequently does not effect the amount of rank you move up or down. But until you reach that point (IE, while you're under about 1100 or so, you tend to -almost always- get 40+ points on a win, and lose 0-5 on a loss) while it's still trying to establish where you actually are, the ranking change does not follow that formula.

To rephrase what you rephrased. Basically the more you win the higher your matchmaking value gets, and the less rating you get so you don't "farm" rating from bad teams. If you win alot of games you get a little rating but you begin to vs people around your skill, making it more fair.

What do you think you could get on eBay for a level 80 paladin, with a tanking and healing set good enough for ToGC10/TOC25, and a 935 resi pvp holy set and a 1600 personal ranking in 2s?
