Re: Official Tournament Round 1 Files

I have difficulties in mind for all of the files and if I were to scour this thread and the other one for what everyone thinks the ratings are, I'm guessing there's going to be a 5+ point range for every file so I'm inclined to just go with what I had off the bat.

The added benefit of having some scoring data to work off of is marginalized given that typical song releases aren't during an official tournament, and performance from players at certain skill levels is going to differ by a somewhat significant amount. So I'm inclined to 'almost' entirely ignore the scoreboards as well.

well you should always ignore the scoreboard imo, or at least take it with the biggest crystal of salt in the history of the universe world of all time mlg championship winner trophymobile

placing full stock in an existing set of scores to determine how hard something is the same thing as stating that you have a complete set of data to work with which is the same thing as stating that there's no sample bias present in your data set which when you're looking at a file with a few hundred (if that) unique plays that was released a week ago under tournament circumstances is an idiotic premise

one which people tend to free dive into all day

Completely fair points. It's always better to compare off of chart structures and not player performances (at least, not until data's normalized over time to where it might be acceptable to make a 1-2 point shift later on).

I am a bit curious as to what you think the difficulties are for the D1/D2 file since we all know that a file with similar structures can be found at vastly different difficulty levels in the lower range, urgh.

Suggested Difficulty: 89
- I'm only giving this a difficulty of 89 purely off of basis of that spike in the dead middle of the file, which forces you to do a split-handed jumptrill into a roll that starts as a jump. Not easy to do at all. The rest of the file, despite being aggressive, is fluent. Even though FFR isn't used to see alternating jump-jacks at this difficulty level, the transitioning into and out of the patterns are not too harsh. A few split-handed bursts coming after some one-handed jumptrill [12] [34] patterns forces players to pay attention to their extry and exit points.

This is the only one I fundamentally disagree on. The file is quite long and relentless with an average NPS of around 18-20, with spikes up to 31. A lot of the jumtrill into roll/burst patterns are extremely jarring, not just the [14][23][14] into 4321roll. You'll see complex hand-gallop patterns that can otherwise be found in Herbie Goes Ballistic (90) at a higher BPM, which can be PA-killers for those not accustomed to them, given their awkward structure. 225 BPM isn't a very manageable speed for those jumptrill patterns (I personally can't hit the [14][23][14] jumptrill at all after being exhausted by the first 1850 notes, for what it's worth).

I'd revise my original assessment to 91 instead of 92, but I definitely think it needs to go above 89.

You'll also see high 20's, low 30's scores in the upper D6 playerbase which suggests 90+

Re: Official Tournament Round 1 Files

oppirish is the only file where I think taking a look at scores might be useful

I spoke with Halogen before the round started expressing some concerns, which lead to a discussion on where the difficulty for oppirish lies. Prior to release I was exactly where Etienne was after his sightread (88/89), but the spiky nature of the file could very easily lead to players dumping several goods at once and consequently scoring much worse than they would on other 88/89s with a much more consistent difficulty curve. Although personally I still think the file sits at 89, I do not foresee scoring data normalizing to anything lower than a 90, and the scoreboards at the moment heavily indicate that.

honestly oppirish feels about as hard if not harder than schmollbluk to me personally but im aware that im awful at files like that and my opinion on it means nothing

Rushy that's pretty funny because in my score that is the only good I got in that transition so I'm obliged to agree yes that arrow is cancer

upon closer inspection because you blew up the image it's almost as if you want to hit that last jump as a quad in hopes it doesn't give you a rush (I'm pretty sure this exactly happened to me)

Re: Official Tournament Round 1 Files

sir, I hit the whole damn thing as quads and pray to my personal god that i don't dump more than 9. I am simply incapable of one-hand trilling that fast into a roll situation

i wouldn't bat an eye at that while playing but i'm pretty sure if i stare at that image any longer i'll mindblock it for eternity

69 for the D5 file, really? I'd go 71 but was thinking at the very least 70

Re: Official Tournament Round 1 Files

my thoughts:

Pink Cloud (feat. Max Collins)
- song: What a bright, fun introduction to the tournament with a slow but upbeat pop song.
- chart: Certainly harder than past tournaments, especially with the addition of hands and some drum triplets. Lunar Landing was the first song for D1 in a past tournament and it's nothing in difficulty compared to this.

Insignia
- song: I'm not a fan of trap music...just feels like a buildup that leads to a deflated section in terms of energy. The last part of the song is nice and bouncy though.
- chart: Probably harder than past tournaments as well, but I felt the difficulty was appropriate. Not much else to say; file is stepped well.

Follow You (feat. Danyka Nadeau) (Rhythmics Remix)
- song: Great high-energy song in my opinion. I like this better than the original which is a house song.
- chart: This is a fast song, and it has some dense layering that definitely makes this one harder than past D3 starter songs. I watched Trumpet play this file endlessly on his Twitch streams. Song also BEGS for a harder difficulty. :)

Red Sphere, Blue Sphere
- song: Cool Sonic 3 remix with a nice beat that I could dance to!
- chart: The first half of the file is pretty typical Silvuh material, with very conservative layering. But then the second half surprises me with denser layering and jumpjacks in streams that I don't usually see from him. What really took me off guard though were the two 32nd trills near the end!

Funny Function
- song: I haven't heard happy hardcore from t+pazolite in quite a long time, so this is a nice change from the usual hardcore or j-core from t+paz.
- chart: Tricky file but stepped well and I love it. I almost sightread AAAed this but something towards the very end tripped me up. I'm a sucker for minijacks though.

Le carnaval des animaux, Movement no. 14 ”Finale”
- song: Pretty lively classical song from the Romantic era of the mid 1800s. What a good one to step.
- chart: Well-stepped; no one part is super difficult, but for some reason I have difficulty piecing everything together for a AAA. The 24th trills are, in my opinion, hardly an issue. I think the scarier parts are actually the 8th jack section 2/3rds through the song, because you can easily get a boo from the layering of hands and jumps. Oh, and that down arrow 8th jacks towards the end is troll, even though I have yet to mess up on that spot.

oppIrish (GYPSYCOREremix)
- song: Sounds like someone bastardized traditional Romanian folk music into breakcore. Kinda funny to hear, but not a fan of the song, including the original oppIrish song. Bird tweets at the end of the song = what
- Actually stepped pretty well, with exception to the transitioning of the [14][23] jumptrill with the 32nds. Pretty fun, but at this BPM and length of song, really draining. My fingers feel like death after playing this.
