This is just like the group "The Beatles" they had long hair, and it was unusual at the time, they were really great singers so the fans wanted to be like them having long hair, etc.
Same goes with emo bands, they dress up extremely unusual sing about cutting themselves and then a not so big majority of people finally figure out that cutting themselves is the final solution to all their problems..
Sure there's other emotional music, but that's besides the point.. Do they sing about cutting themselves and dress up in unusual clothing?
No. Your question is answered, the music is definitely not sung by emos.

Emo means you take everything too seriously, have a lot less problems than you really do, and you don't know how to lighten up. Crying is fine, really, crying about absolutely nothing is a different story.
