Imperialism and colonization plagued the country for a while, until they finally became independent. But somewhere along the line, Haiti had set itself up for the crisis it faces today. The oppression from the government is forcing many civilians of Haiti into a state of poverty, unable to afford food, water, and other basic necessities. First off, before colonization by Spain, Hispaniola was occupied by the Taino Amerindians (CIA). In the 1690’s, the French came into the equation, and wanted a share of Hispaniola. They were sold the western side of the island (Ibid).
