Average rank is the average of all your level ranks. Each time you play a song, it ranks you with every other person who has ever played that song. If you haven't played a song before, your rank is automatically last (Equal to one more than the number of people who played the song). So if a song has 200,000 different people who played it and you haven't, you'd be rank 200,001 on it with everyone else who hasn't played it.

The easiest way to keep advancing is to set goals for yourself - like FC all 3's (or 4's 5's, ect.) or 10 AAA's - or set average rank goals (under 30k, 25k, 20k, ect.) I set a new list of goals for myself every time I achieve my old ones,and it helps me move forward.
